Cycling BC has asked candidates in the local elections to confirm there support for the sport of cycling. The following email was sent to over 1466 candidates in communities throughout the province:
Dear Candidate,
Cycling British Columbia is the sports governing body for all the racing disciplines of cycling. Our association and our local affiliated groups in communities throughout BC host racing events that take place on public roads, in local/regional parks, and in municipally or district owned facilities (such as BMX tracks and Velodromes). Several municipalities have a great track record for supporting the sport of cycling and they provide levels of support similar to that offered to field sports, ice sports, and aquatic sports – other local authorities have not yet adjusted to the increase in interest in our sport.
The thousands of our members that participate in local racing events and the many thousands more that participate in single events in your community would benefit greatly from a more consistent level of support from all the local authorities. With this in mind, we would like to ask for your position on supporting the growth of cycling (as a sport) in your community. Specifically, our members would like to hear that if elected you intend to advocate for the sport of cycling (road, mountain biking, BMX, & cyclo-cross) to receive comparable support to that offered to similar sized sports in your community. With your consent, Cycling BC will gladly share your position on this issue via the Cycling BC website, on all our social media and through our E-newsletter which reaches 13,748 current and past participants in local cycling races.
In closing, I would like to thank you on behalf of Cycling BC, our Board of Directors, and our members that live in your community.
Kindest regards,
Keith Ryan
Chief Executive Officer

| 100 Mile House | District | Maureen | Pinkney | MAYOR | I worked with the local cadet Corp here for over 14 years and was instrumental in getting them the facility they needed to continue to enhance the youth in our area.
I bring this up so that you know that what I say is not just a campaign blurb…! I am very excited about enhancing the sport here in 100 Mile House and the South Cariboo. We need a proper BMX track and we need our trails linked to the other trails in the area I am fully aware of how important and growing this sport is and am 100 % behind it If elected, I would like to meet yourself &/or representative and see how we can get this going here. |
| Abbotsford | City | Patricia | Ross | COUNCILLOR | Abbotsford has always been a supporter of cycling sports. Having said that, I believe we do need to step up and have more designated bike lanes. My own husband quite riding his bike to work for a while after he was clipped by a car. If there isn’t a designated white line, to show the bike lane, too many car drivers just don’t respect the bike riders. After the city put a bike lane in a major commuting route, he started riding again and feels much safer. But I know you are also talking about cycling as a sport as well and I’m happy to report Abbotsford is very supportive of that. We have been major supporters of BMX – I’m sure you are likely aware of that though, being as involved as you are. We also have some fabulous mountain biking areas here and are working with the province to develop it more on Sumas mountain. I’m very much supportive of these initiatives. |
| Abbotsford | City | Simon | Gibson | COUNCILLOR | Simon Gibson, incumbent Councillor for the City of Abbotsford has cycled extensively – including a long trek from Sacramento to Los Angeles on Hwy 1 – and is enthusiastic about the sport. He is pleased with the current efforts of the City to provide appropriate venues and is enthusiastic about the growth of the sport as healthy and environmentally sensitive sport. |
| Abbotsford | City | Meghann | Coughlan | MAYOR | I’m a great supporter of Mountain Biking … my sons are elite thletes in the sport, also road biking and (when kids) BMX … which my grandchildren are now actively involved in. You have my support |
| Abbotsford | City | Les | Barkman | COUNCILLOR | Abbotsford has if I’m not mistake a world class BMX track which attract users from all over North America.Being on Parks, Rec. and Culture at the city I see the benifit for all ages. My only issue is with bike lanes after the fact. Davis California has bike lanes built in their street system not build streets then figure out a way put in bike lanes. Also there has to be a plan and I think just because there is funding from higher levels of government without a planis not smart planning. Have a great weekend. |
| Armstrong | City | Kelly | Rowe | COUNCILLOR | I support Cycling. It is an excellent form or exercise and lots of fun for everyone. As far as the sport aspect of it, it seems very exciting. We have BMX trax up at SilverStar mountain which I know a lot of people in the area make use of. We just started as a community, where possible, putting share road templates for bikes. Because of the age of a lot or our streets, there isn’t always the proper space, but as we go forward with infrastructure, we certainly consider the bikes and incorporate them where possible. |
| Bowen Island | Island Municipality | Jonathan | Bell | COUNCILLOR | As a former athlete, I know the importance all sports, and the need to develop and promote as many activities as possible. However, on Bowen Island, we don’t have a lot of options, especially for cycling. Due to the limitation of our roads, they would not be practical for any type of event. As far at mountain biking, with the imminent development of a national park on bowen, most of the area that would be appropriate would fall under the jurisdiction of parks canada. BMX on the other hand is certainly something we should have. I have been pushing for a skateboard park, so it would be great to have an X park to hold multiple type of events.
As we move on from some of the more urgent matters requiring councils attention, I would be putting that idea forward, and hope start the ball rolling. |
| Bowen Island | Island Municipality | Tim | Rhodes | COUNCILLOR | Bowen Island is a community of only about 3600 people and we have a very small tax base.
The municipality does not currently fund any sports activities. That said, I would be happy to support any request you might have to host an event on Bowen to raise awareness for your club. |
| Central Kootenay | I | Sandra | Smith | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | I am running for the position of Director, Area I, Regional District West Kootenays. (ignore the street address below). It is easy for me to support and advocate the sport of cycling including mountain biking. Cycling is popular here and I would gladly support increasing the sport in this area. |
| Central Kootenay | E | Ramona | Faust | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | I support cycling as a means of transportation, a health producing activity and as a great past-time for you as well as adults. It builds friendships and family ties. I only had a bike as means of transportation until I started driving at age 30!
I am lucky to be the RDCK Director for Area E where the Fat Tire Fest has taken place each year for the past 16 years at Morning Mountain. I hope to work with the Nelson Cycling Club to improve this area, put in facilities and empower them to build trail. I also live on an awesome little bike route in Harrop-Procter where cyclists come from Nelson to have a cinnamon bun and then cycle the 37 kilometres back. Svoboda Road is also in my electoral area as is Mountain Station and parts of the Great Northern Trail: all used for riding. I see tremendous economic potential from cycling and would like to encourage: green” mountain biking as well as road cycling by looking for infrastructure dollars when they come available. As for taxation, in the Regional District a referendum or petition needs to be put in place to get taxation funding support for new projects. We have tax conservative voters in Area E so I do not think I would win that strategy, but there are grant monies available for moderate amounts of support for cycling and II encourage applications from the local club. |
| Central Kootenay | H | Will | Parker | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | Hello my name is Will Parker and I am running for RDCK Director in area H. Like other areas in the Regional District of the Central Kootenays, area H has a some amazing mountain bike trails and unrecognized potential for road bike races. I believe that local residents would be in full support of cycling races in the area. I worked for a short time for the only bike currier company in Mexico city and remember when a friend of mine in Winlaw received the first “mountain bike” I had ever seen. I consider the bike a symbol of perfect technology and all that is good in societies effort to creatively move closer to sustainable ways of living. Cycling is a part of healthy living and if elected I will be committed to supporting cycling events, and improving the general cycling infrastructure. I would like to build several walking/riding bridges connecting communities on the north side of the Slocan river with the rail trail. Investing in the infrastructure of sustainability is one of the things that excites me most, I would also like to see the paving of a bike lane on the rail trail. |
| Central Kootenay | G | Mark | Bennett | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | Great initiative. I have work hard against regional district policy toward motorized use on our rail trail to promote cycling in this area. |
| Central Okanagan | Central Okanagan East | John | Collinson | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | I support cycling, anything to get people up off their behinds and get active (especially kids); it is also beneficial to our environment. As the current President of our local Community Association we sponsor, encourage and/or subsidize hiking, horseback riding, snow shoeing, skating. While we encourage human powered activities we do frown on and even discourage motorized activities — particularly on established trails (these activities quickly destroy the trails). |
| Central Saanich | District | Wayne | Spencer | COUNCILLOR | Let me start by saying that I believe in all sports and that yes indeed all sports should be supported by our community as a healthy way of living. The healthier our population is the less we need to spend on the reactive healthcare we though billions at each year meanwhile our population continues to grow in age and weight. Though that is a Provincial issue we are all pay taxes and if we can encourage cycling as a healthy lifestyle change let’s get it going.
To me funding should always be on a sliding scale with the following criteria: There is a limited pool of funds and if funding a group of adults with jobs in the pursuit of fitness at the expense of children that would otherwise be roaming the streets then I would not be in favour but if that same group of adults gave time and energy to help kids learn to love the sport then I would be more than just in favour but a huge advocate. We need to start giving to our youth especially in Central Saanich were there is less to do as a youth then in the more urban areas. |
| Chase | Village | Tristan | Cavers | COUNCILLOR | As a fellow cyclist and part owner of a bicycle shop; Golden Ears Bike Stand, I’m very happy that Cycling BC is taking an interest in civic elections. My very fist taste of cycling as a sport was BMX racing in the early 90′s Chase had a very active race club at the time, my interest did wane though and until I discovered mountain in 1998 and began racing downhill in the summer of 1999. over the years my cycling slowly shifted back to street BMX(the bikes tend not to break as much) and now cycle touring. Unfortunately cycling as sport has not fared well in Chase in the last 20 years the building at the BMX track burnt in the mid 90′s and the club seemed to dissolve around that fire. There are mountain bikers in the community and trails But Chase is not a mountain bike destination. For an aging community like chase general transportation is the greatest use of bicycles. Though as a councillor i would lend all support possible to any events that could be held in our community. |
| Chase | Village | Ron | Anderson | MAYOR | I am always interested in supporting all levels of sports activities and yes I would support your particular sport to the best of our ability. |
| Chilliwack | City | Phillip | Bruce | COUNCILLOR | In Chilliwack I brag about are recreational oasis. I have met many of you in my chosen profession, and it has always been a positive encounter. Your organization is quality people involved in a clean sports, spending money in are community. You will always have my endorsement. |
| Chilliwack | City | Ronald | Wedel | COUNCILLOR | I dont know the level of support that Chilliwack provides to the cycling community. I do know they have created bike lanes in the community and have a vision of creating more walking and bike trails throughout our city. I support that vision and would continue to do what we can for cycling in Chilliwack. thank you |
| Chilliwack | City | Richard | Harrington | COUNCILLOR | I want to go on record as stating that I do support our community providing funding for cycling activities to the same proportional level that other sports receive. |
| Chilliwack | City | Brenda | Currie | COUNCILLOR | Part of my platform is that I am a sports advocate and I have been involved in many sports organizations. mostly in fundraising and as director on a large board of 49 charities and non profit groups including local sports groups. I can proudly say I will support your group at City Hall. |
| Clinton | Village | Susan | Swan | COUNCILLOR | here are some terrific trails around the Village of Clinton that were originally developed as cross country ski trails. They are also used for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. If elected, I would like to see these trails developed further and promoted for more usage. They are especially under used in the summer months so biking would be a great use for them. Biking is a great form of exercise and we need to encourage more young people especially to put down their game controllers and get on a bike. Your organization is one that is supporting that view. |
| Coldstream | District | Peter | McClean | COUNCILLOR | My position of cycling is favorable as I have spent many an hour on my saddle peddling about, in my younger years. Safety continues to be a big concern and my community is doing what it can financially to develop more pathways that favor cycling. Our community has always been receptive to allow road closures for events of various activities and that would include cycling. Trail riding is done in the local provincial park and close by at Silver Star and Vernon has the only local BMX track and as we are primarily an agricultural community the ALC hampers any thought of creating one in our community of Coldstream. |
| Coldstream | District | Dave | Hrabchuk | MAYOR | my love for cycling dates back to the days of when Greg Lemond was winning Tour de Frances. I was 14 or 15 at the time. I fondly remember my first Fuji road racer too.
I also remember being hit by 2 cars when I was 17 and 18, escaping near death in one of them, while training on the road. Safety for cyclists is a major concern for me. These days I do some recreational mountain biking only, however, I remain an enthusiast of the sport and could get behind initiatives that further participation and safety in the sport. |
| Columbia Shuswap | C | Robyn | King | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | Thank you for alowing me to be awar of your interest in this area. I certainly do support the sport of cycling in this area. I used to, several years ago cycle myself. My older brothers both were avid cyclers, with my brother Brook particapting in the BC Summer games, back in the mid 70′s, he was a silver medalist. He was an avid rider for many years along with the gold metalist Gary Marlet, not sure if I’ve spelled his last name correctly, as it’s been many years, we were highshool friends. This was while we lived in Kelowna and during the time when 10 speeds were all the rage.
I realize the extent that cycling has evolved, not just here in the Okanagan, but everywhere, and certainly not only as a green alternative. Mountain biking in this area is not new, and although I’ve not been out to see where the trails are, I appreciate that this area does offer trails. I can no longer ride myself due to injuries, but I certainly encourage others to venture out and explore the Shuswap by bike. Even if its only along the roadways around Blind Bay, where I reside and out to Eagle Bay and or White lake. If you have not hosted an event prior to my arriving in this community I would certainly encourage your efforts to do so. Please check out the link below on our wonderful local trails. I also realize that as the community grows, and infrastructure is put into place, mountain bike trails and or areas along side the roadways for walking or cycling is very important for the shear enjoyment, health and lifestyle of our citizen’s. |
| Columbia Shuswap | C | Ted | Bacigalupo | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | I do have two bikes, a mountain and a road bike but do not get enough opportunities to use either. As director of the CSRD I was the first to pursue and achieve the first parks and rec. plan in electoral area C the South Shuswap among the six electoral areas five of which now also have a parks and rec. plan. Included in the parks plans is an extensive section for trail, both wilderness and roadside for hikers, walkers and bikers which to a large part have been funded by the electoral parks and rec. plan budgets and also in partnership with the Hut to Hut Trail Alliance and matching grant funds. As a result of this initiative, the CSRD’s Shuswap Tourism dept. has produced very high quality professional brochures promoting all trails throughout the entire Shuswap Area. Do I support the sport of cycling? The answer obviously is yes. Thanks you for this opportunity. |
| Colwood | City | Brian | Tucknott | MAYOR | I am running for mayor in Colwood. It is many years since I hurtled down hillsides at breakneck speeds but I still remember the joy, and the subsequent pain! A sports related injury has put paid to my cycling days, although I still own a bicycle and hope for a miracle. I cannot understand why anybody would not support sports of all stripes and I can unequivocally state that I will. |
| Colwood | City | Teresa | Harvey | COUNCILLOR | Thank you for your e-mail enquiry. Following are some of my thoughts with respect to my position on supporting the growth of cycling (as a sport) in the City of Colwood.
Exposure to major cycling events go a long way to encouraging increased participation in the community because: 1) cycling is something everyone can do, therefore is immediately model-able; I believe promoting cycling can go a long way to combatting transportation inequity in society due to it being a low cost option. While vehicles are not financially accessible to everyone, it is much easier to afford a bike, especially when recycled bikes and re-used bikes are made available to low income families. Funding cycling events is important as it addresses supporting a sport that is more economically accessible for families and children. International research has shown that segregated bike lanes are more attractive to seniors, women and children because of the safety they feel from being physically separated from traffic. Creating safe bike lanes away from traffic would encourage more people to cycle more often and allow riders to reach more destinations safely. Safe routes to school need to be established so that all school age children can ride their bikes to and from school! Given the dramatic rise in childhood obesity, trips to and from school offer children the chance to develop healthy lifestyle habits. In the next 5-10 years, we need to establish more cycling routes that fully integrate our community. These will not only serve local residents, but if properly designed, can be used for ecotourism and international sporting events. I want to work with other municipalities to implement the priority projects and develop the recommended inter-community bicycle network. I want to establish an active transportation safety taskforce to ensure that safety concerns are clearly identified and addressed early in the implementation process. If we want to encourage active transportation, then it must be safe to do so! Quebec’s Route Verte provides a great Canadian example of how cycling tourism can be properly developed, using an integrated approach involving the business community. Cycling tourists have been shown to spend more money that regular tousits. Vancouver Island has a great advantage of having a climate that can support cycling all year round. If Quebec can realise an excellent cycling tourism industry, then Vancouver Island with no winter climate, combined with majestic ocean and mountain views should have no limit to what can be created, with significant economic spinoffs for this area. |
| Coquitlam | City | Neal | Nicholson | COUNCILLOR | Here in Coquitlam we have not seen approaches to Council seeking faacilities other than BMX tracks. Our focus has been on supporting cycling as a transportation method. I believe we’ve made considerable progress although I think we need to increase our annual allocation of resources to accomplish more sooner. We’ve benefitted from lots of input from the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition on that front. Post election, I’d be glad of the opportunity to learn more about cycling as a sport. From my unknowledgeable position, it appears that we have a number of existing facilities that could support your sport fairly easily. I do know that mountain biking has been in consideration as we develop recreation facilities on Burke Mountain. |
| Coquitlam | City | Randy | Delmonico | COUNCILLOR | I support a network of cycling trails/bikepaths throughout the city. I have been to the velodrome in Burnaby several times but only in my capacity as a Burnaby firefighter. If you would like to call me to update me in regards to your sport |
| Coquitlam | City | Selina | Robinson | COUNCILLOR | I was first elected in 2008 and have been the strongest advocate on Coquitlam Council for road cycling infrastructure. I have also been advocating to develop a vision for mountain biking on Burke Mountain. I am a strong advocate for developing and maintaining a BMX facility in our city centre. |
| Coquitlam | City | Fred | Soofi | COUNCILLOR | I strongly believe cities should do their best for creating urban cycling routes, especially in BC which does have a climate allowing year around cycling. I would like to see senior government providing interest free loan for people who need assistance in purchasinga Candian made bicycle. Also educate the community on an ongoing basis the benefits of cycling to health, environment, etc. |
| Coquitlam | City | Vincent | Wu | COUNCILLOR | I welcome residents to get active and I will support sport cycling such as BMX or mountain biking, because cycling is a healthy way of recreation and good for physical fitness. In Coquitlam, Burke Mountain and Eagle Mountain Park could be assigned as two potential terrains for sport cycling. |
| Coquitlam | City | Araz | Rismani | COUNCILLOR | I strongly support cycling as a sport also as a method of transportation which is environmental friendly. Promoting cycling is promoting health from every aspect you look at it. City needs to ensure safety of bicyclers are granted on roads by having sufficient bike lanes and further educating drivers on observing the rights of bicyclers. I also feel that every one should be able to afford to own a bike. Using bikes means less use of gas, less air pollution and is very economical to both government and people. Government levels can play a role in return to make this sport more affordable and safe. |
| Coquitlam | City | Barrie | Lynch | MAYOR | I am running to be the next mayor of Coquitlam after serving 9 consecutive years as a city councillor. I was first elected in 2002 and have been a continuous advocate on Coquitlam Council for road cycling infrastructure. I believe it would be beneficial to Coquitlam to increase opportunities for mountain biking. I continue to support the sport of cycling and look forward to improving our BMX facility in our city centre. |
| Courtenay | City | Stuart | MacInnis | COUNCILLOR | I am a huge proponant for cycling, both as a sport and a means of transport. Until December of last year. I hadn’t owned a vehile for the previous 12 years, and my main mode of transport for those 12 years was my bicycle(s) I think that cycling as an alternate means of transport is a subject which should have further discussion at all levels of government, but it all starts at the municipal level. I think that in larger cities such as Vancover that the idea of cycling as transport is somtimes “backburnered” for the sake of pushing mass transit, and in more remote rural areas that it is sometimes thought of as unreasonable. But for a city the size of Courtenay and a community the size of the Comox Valley I think is the ideal for promoting cycling as a means of transport, both for enviromental impact and healthly living. I also think that promoting cycling as a sport can be increased, I know that Cumberland has the BMX track, and moutain biking trails. I think that Courtenay could also facilitate these types of faclities and trails. Although I think for a community our size a Velodrome may not be fesable(although I’m not sure on the costs of building one) I think that there are many cycling venues that could be created in our community. And that some new infrastructure measures could be taken to ensure the saftey of those choosing the cycling option. As I said I spent 12 years with my bicycle as my only means of transport, so I can both appreciate the joy of cycling and epathize with those who wish to be able to enjoy the sport without feeling threatened on the road. |
| Courtenay | City | Doug | Kerr | COUNCILLOR | I have no problem with supporting cycling as a sport or just for recreation and transportation. If local groups come forward with ideas for council to consider I would look upon this favourably. |
| Courtenay | City | Doug | Hillian | COUNCILLOR | My vision is a community where we focus on moving people rather than vehicles; where new and existing development is pedestrian and cyclist friendly; where transit is effective and well-used; and where we find ways to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels to promote individual health and combat climate change. The City is already making progress and, with public engagement, can continue initiatives such as:
encourage infilling and increased density close to shopping hubs to enable walking and reduce commutes. promote traffic calming in neighbourhoods and insist that new development is pedestrian/cycling friendly. push senior governments to direct infrastructure spending into sustainable transportation initiatives. recognize cycling as a key element in managing traffic flow and promote cycling infrastructure through continued development of a network of routes, including the proposed pedestrian bridge if economically feasible. look to other communities such as Portland, and work towards making the Comox Valley a leader in alternative transportation. bring our best engineering minds together with other citizens in a transportation task force to look at creative initiatives to address ever-increasing traffic volumes. |
| Cowichan Valley | B – Shawnigan Lake | Ken | Cossey | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | As the incumbent Area Director for Shawnigan Lake, I have tried to advance the cause of cycling in the Cowichan Valley through the following initiatives:
Ongoing meetings with representatives from the Ministry of Transportation as well as the region’s roadwork contractors, Mainroad South Island Contracting. Good luck with your advocacy on behalf of the cyclists in BC. |
| Cowichan Valley | D – Cowichan Bay | Greg | Hunt | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | I strongly support cycling in any manner, throughout the community.
Cycling is a great way to see the residents close-up and at a slower pace, develop stronger bodies increase the over health of the community. The environment would be healthier. Last week an idea came to me, a nature centre worth $ 350,000 + is on the mind of a few here in Cowichan Bay, what if that money was used to purchase every able body person a bicycle. The bicycle would be specially designed and built for the residence. A win win situation for humanity. It was a good idea! I also support the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, riding the ‘Big Bike” a 30 seat bicycle. |
| Cowichan Valley | D – Cowichan Bay | Lori | Iannidinardo | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | As the incumbent Area Director for Cowichan Valley Regional District Area D: Cowichan Bay, I am a long term proponent of cycling in the Cowichan Valley. I regularly keep in touch with my area riding on my bike. I also support cycling as a sport; whether competitive or recreational, it is good for our health and as a sport deserves the same level of community support as field sport, ice sports and aquatics.
On the non-competitive level, I am working with other Area Directors in the Cowichan Valley to create more connective bicycling and walking trails that get people where they want to go safely without having to resort to fossil fuel powered transportation. We also need to see double bike racks on every transit bus, bike racks at bus stops so that people have the option to “rack and ride”, and bike lockers in Duncan for those who commute by bus to Victoria. As we stay healthy we can also reduce our carbon footprint. |
| Cowichan Valley | C – Cobble Hill | Gerry | Giles | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | Attached are two photos from a ride I participated in that was for Rotary’s Polio Plus. One is at the start in Mill Bay and the other is in Campbell River. We made it to Sayward before we turned around and came back. I’m the one in the yellow shirt behind the banner and the red shirt with my bike. My brief answers to your questions are:
1. Safety. Having bike lanes that accommodates cycling traffic separate from motor vehicles. Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your questions. |
| Cranbrook | City | Pat | O’Connell | MAYOR | I support your sport and when elected would be extremely interested in sitting down with your Board of Directors in our area to discuss ways of supporting and promoting the sport of Cycling. |
| Cranbrook | City | Tasy | Strouzas | COUNCILLOR | I think this area has a lot it could do in terms of Cycling Races etc. I watch the Tour de France every year and think about how great it would be to have a race like that in our area. we have the mountains, we have the straight stretches, it would be perfect! I would also be a good advocate of a mountain bike park if anyone was to plan it out. The Rails to Trails is a good start, but I think we could do a lot more. Let me know if you have anything that you would like me to address as well. I look forward to working with you in the future! |
| Cranbrook | City | Jim | Wavrecan | MAYOR | My name is Jim Wavrecan and I am a candidate for mayor in the city of Cranbrook. I have been on council for 21 years and would like to point out to you the support that council has given to cycling in our community. We began with a partnership with Rotary to construct a cycle walk trail that allows our citizens to travel to a large part of the city. Last year we opened the North Star Trail system which is a conversion of the rail line between Kimberley and Cranbrook to be used as a cycle walk system. Most recently, we have authorized a designated area in Balment Park to be used to house the Bike Skills Park that the local community is in the process of developing. It is important that councils represent all aspects of interests in their communities. These are examples of what has been done to date. |
| Cranbrook | City | Wayne | Stetski | MAYOR | One of my favourite things to do is to cycle, especially mountain biking. My oldest son did the downhill mountain bike racing circuit for two years (won the Canada Cup race in Fernie for his age class the first year he competed competitively). My wife, my 3 kids and my granddaughter all mountain bike. When I was District Manager for BC Parks for the Kootenays we initiated the Wasa Lake Triathlon which continues to grow in popularity every year.
As part of my platform for Mayor of Cranbrook I am very excited about the concept of establishing a Bike Skill’s Park in Cranbrook and to look for opportunities to expand cycling trails in our community. In short, I am a fan of cycling and believe we need to encourage cycling for transportation, recreation and community health. |
| Creston | Town | Scott | Veitch | COUNCILLOR | I am in total support of Cycling BC – I hope that we can oblige you with a sanctioned event in our Town. We have some great potential venues. |
| Creston | Town | Renee | Kyle | COUNCILLOR | I will support any and all activities that the community supports or has an intrest in. Cycling safty and constrution of bike paths have been addrress during this election. I believe that working with and supporting Cycling BC could be benificial to Creston. |
| Cumberland | Village | Todd | Riley | COUNCILLOR | I am all for cycling events along with all sporting events that occur in our community as long as they properly insure themselves as all others do especially on our roads, the laws must apply to all equally. |
| Cumberland | Village | Roger | Kishi | COUNCILLOR | The Village of Cumberland is fortunate to have great cycling opportunities, BMX & mountain biking in particular.
The Village is involved in a public consultation process currently regarding the move of the BMX track to allow for development. (for road and water/ sewer access) I am concerned that this will disrupt the 2012 BMX season, and that the Village may see a net loss of public park space as a result. I will continue to particpate in this process to voice my concerns. Cycling is an important activity in Cumberland, and I would be interested in seeing it increase in a way that engages the residents of Cumberland and cyclists. |
| Cumberland | Village | Gwyn | Sproule | COUNCILLOR | have been representing Cumberland Council on the Comox Valley Cycling Task since its inception 4 years ago. I supported the first ever Car Free Sunday in Cumberland in September. I will continue to find ways to make Cumberland a safe place to cycle and also to have safe connections to the rest of the Comox Valley. |
| Cumberland | Village | Eric | Kozak | COUNCILLOR | As a candidate for Cumberland Council and a cyclist I fully support cycling in all its forms. Cumberland has always had an excellent position with regards to cycling. From the world class BMX track to local supports for cyclists to the dozens of mountain bike trails Cumberland is and continues to be a great place to be a cyclist.Cyclists in Cumberland can travel through the quiet side streets. Or, they can cycle to nearby Comox Lake via the main road or any one of several trails of varying challenge levels all the while taking in the natural and historic beauty of Cumberland. Cumberland was, is and always will be a place where cyclists are welcome. |
| Delta | District | Sylvia | Bishop | COUNCILLOR | As you may know, the Corporation of Delta hosts a major cycling event, the Tour de Delta held every July in all 3 areas of the municipality. We have cycling on our minds. I am happy to work with interested community groups to advocate for the sport of cycling in receiving comparable support to similar sized sports in Delta. |
| Delta | District | Neil | Corbett | COUNCILLOR | Delta is a remarkable community and is widely known as “Home of the Tour de Delta”. I am proud to have been one of the cycling advocates that initiated this event, and am a Director of this amazing 3 day professional cycling event since 2001. I am now going into my 12th year on the board, manage over 200 race volunteers annually and act as Head Race Marshal once the race is on, making the road safe for over 100 cyclist competing. We also have a kids race component where children age 8 and over get to race on the same crit courses just before the main event. I have also acted as technical director for the Delta Triathlon since the race began in 2000 and continue to this day in a volunteer capacity, and usually find time to race it as well! I am president of our local South Delta Triathlon Club, and with 50 members, we offer triathlon training and programs for all ages. Competing in triathlon whenever can, I completed my second Penticton Ironman event this past summer. Safe roads for our many cycling enthusiasts is one of my highest priorities and we need to continue to strongly advocate for more cycling routes and safe cycling education in the community starting at the elementary level. |
| Delta | District | Jeannie | Kanakos | COUNCILLOR | I served on Council 2005 – 2008 and was Chair of the Cycling Committee. A group of avid cyclists and myself drafted a number of recommendations to improve cycling in Delta. Which are and will be implemented by Council. I have been a member of Team Coastal – and they have helped me improve my own cycling as part of my triathlon training. I see cycling as an important component of our community mobility – and have proposed that there be a Mayor and Council (from South of the Fraser) Summit on Traffic, Transit and Cycling. I support improvements to cycling and want to see this happen while on Council. |
| Delta | District | Anne | Peterson | COUNCILLOR | The health and wellbeing of our citizens is of great importance to me and cycling, in all its forms, provides opportunities for exercise and social wellbeing. I would definitely continue to support the great strides that Delta has done in providing for cyclists. We have had over 10 years of Tour de Delta races. We have worked with cycling clubs to provide opportunities for their members such as the group that maintains the trails in Watershed Park. We have also raised awareness through the painted bicycle on our roadways for motorists to be on the watch for cyclists. I would be very interested in other ideas on how we can help |
| Delta | District | Bruce | McDonald | COUNCILLOR | Delta does have a great history with cycling sports. From Mountain Bike trails in the Watershed to the miles of dyke and road trails, to the Tour De Delta we have supported and will continue to support the sports of cycling in all their forms. Comparable funding support should be available. |
| Delta | District | John | Meech | MAYOR | I would be a major advocate for the sport of cycling to continue receiving support for this race as well as other additional support subject to available funds.
There are opportunities to set up BMX facilities in Delta in which the Corporation could perhaps, supply access to publicly-owned property. We need to expand our bicycle lanes on public roads particularly from the Massey tunnel down through Ladner and Tsawwassen as well as creating substantially more bicycle trails. |
| Duncan | City | Paul | Fletcher | MAYOR | I am very supportive of cycling and would love to see road racing return to the streets of Duncan. Not knowing much about the sport I believe that there is already quite a few outdoor off road events in the Valley. With what we have to offer here in amenities, environment, volunteer support and desire to encourage the sport it would be a great partnership to increase cycle sport here |
| Duncan | City | Tom | Duncan | COUNCILLOR | Thanks for the note, I bought a new bike last year, a cruiser and have enjoyed cycling in Duncan, you may not be aware of the size of the City of Duncan, but we are only one square mile. There is potential for street races in our city and in fact, next year, 2012 is our city Centennial, if you have a proposal for a race in Duncan please submit it to our Centennial Committee at 200 Craig St P.O. Box 820 Duncan BC v9l 3y2. Our city has an Active Transportation Plan and it incorporates cycling and I hope to be re-elected and work with our new council to implement the plan, we need cycling lanes in Duncan to allow safe cycling in the city. Thank you for the interest on my position of cycling in our city |
| Duncan | City | Cassandra | Barfield | COUNCILLOR | I live in Duncan and chose my area specifically so I can walk or cycle anywhere (almost). However, I find cycling safely and within the traffic laws to be very challenging. As part of an overall encompassing plan for our small but very vibrant downtown, we need to address everyone’s needs from level sidewalk for people with mobility issues, to good bicycle lanes. We also need adequate bike parking spaces. Bike sporting events could have lots of possible opportunities in and around Duncan on our great trails. |
| Duncan | City | Michelle | Staples | COUNCILLOR | a regional transportation plan as is the only thing that makes sense for the safety of cyclists in our communities. Nothing would be more frustrating or unsafe when you are out riding than having bike lane end mid way down a street because the jurisdiction changed.. Working with many non profits I know and understand the necessity of working to build strong projects that support an overall goals for a community project or program. Partnerships are key to the development of a regional cycle plan and to leverage funding and resources for its implementation. There are so many examples of effective cycling transportation strategies so to do this we will not have to reinvent the wheel, just figure out which spokes to use to make a wheel that will works best for our community. There are excellent examples of bike share programs, low cost commuter programs, cycle tourism and bike lifts for gruelling hills that are alive and thriving for us to learn from. |
| East Kootenay | C | Robert | Gay | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | Ride on!…many of the regions in the kooenay continue to support all type of riding. |
| Enderby | City | Earl | Shipmaker | COUNCILLOR | Brad Case and I are both Councillors for the City of Enderby. We certainly support cycling, as does the rest of council. Enderby and area offers several scenic cycling opportunities and has many out of town cycling groups stop at a local restaurant after a pleasurable ride in and around Enderby. |
| Enderby | City | Brad | Case | COUNCILLOR | See Earl Shipmaker Comments |
| Esquimalt | Township | Tim | Morrison | COUNCILLOR | Thank you for this opportunity to voice my support for the sport of cycling. The sport of cycling is a major contributor to healthy communities. This sport encourages all of us to spend more time on our bikes and less time in our cars. I strongly support and advocate increased profile and recognition for the sport of cycling as we work to build greener, cleaner, healthier lifestyles. |
| Fort St. John | City | Bruce | Christensen | COUNCILLOR | I believe everyone is aware that a healthy body is a productive body. Exercise not only strengthens the body but also the mind. It is important that communities work to remove barriers so that activities like cycling can be enjoyed by all citizens. Communities must continue to work to create an atmosphere where private individuals and corporations will become part of the funding mechanism. I personally do not believe that communities should fund activities, although we all know that sometimes, “seed” money is necessary to get things started. In the case of cycling I would like to see designated bicycle lanes on certain streets where there is room. I have travelled to Europe and have seen what can happen when there is a proper bike lane. We also need areas where people can leave their bicycles during the day, when they are at work or shopping so that they are safe. I sincerely hope that this short response gives you a bit of an idea where i am on the issue of bicycles in communities. sincerely |
| Fort St. John | City | Don | Irwin | MAYOR | I know the benefits for individuals and families. We in Fort St John continue to build walking / cycling trails which are well used.Best wishes in your promotion of cycling. |
| Fraser Valley | D | Michael | Henshall | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | My family are bike enthusiasts and enjoy the rural area in which we ride. I feel road safety for those that ride on the roads is of upmost importance. In our area we are under the ministry of highways jurisdiction not a municipality. I have wondered why bike routes are not clearly marked along the #1 highway and would lobby for clear signage of these routes if I was to be elected. I have a close friend that enjoys the Vedder Mountain mountain bike trails and feel this is an important area to retain and protect for many mountain bikers. When we lived in Chilliwack my son enjoyed the dirt bmx track in Sardis and were saddened to see it go. I believe that crown land belongs to the citizens of the province and we are to be stewards of this land and enjoy it. I will definitely vote along lines that encourage biking and other outdoor recreation that is not encumbered by taxes or fees by government. If I was to be elected I would invite your guidance regarding clear signage for bike routes along the #1 highway and any other bike related issues that are of importance to the bicycle enthusiast. |
| Fraser-Fort George | H | Nathalie | Olson | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | my position on the sport of cycling in the Robson and Canoe Valleys (Area H, Regional District of Fraser-Fort George). I have been an avid supporter of cycling for many years as my daughter is an accomplished cyclist in both road racing and mountain biking. Valemount Secondary School has had a very active mountain bike club for many years, and along with that, has, with its members, built many trails in the surrounding area for that purpose. A recent proposal by a number of Valemount pro-active bikers to enhance the biking trails to competitive levels, is on the local agenda. Local government officials and regional representatives, as well as tourist groups and business interests have rallied to support the project. I,too, am very much in support of this project and furthering the sport of cycling, and competitive cycling in the province. We are hoping to make Valemount a destination point and hub of provincial and interprovincial cycling events as we have the perfect terrain for all types of cycling. Thank you for your query, and carry on with promoting the sport! Best regards, Nathalie Olson. Regional Representative Candidate, Area H, Regional District of Fraser-Fort George. |
| Fraser-Fort George | D | Claudette | Currie | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | I support the efforts of the Tabor Mountain Recreational Society who on Saturday, Oct. 29th were formally recognized by the province of having 407 kilometres of trails. “These trails are motorized and non-motorized for everyone to use and will give people a place to explore” said Steven Dubas, the president of the Tabor Mountain Recreational Society. As quoted from the Prince George Citizen: They have been formally registered with the province under a section 56 trail agreement. This order formally recognizes the partnership between the ministry of forests, lands and natural resources, Recreation Sites and Trails B.C. and Tabor Mountain Recreation Society. |
| Fraser-Fort George | C | Bill | Norton | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | I thank you for the opportunity to express my support for the sport of cycling. Yes I support and will advocate for the sport of cycling. My sons were BMX riders when that sport first started. In my barn is stored the bike ( Diamond Back) that won both the BC and Alberta Provincials one summer.
The sport has gone to new levels of skill, stamina and daring that I do not believe the public fully appreciates. Like cross country skiing, many of the bike events do not lend themselves to television coverage so they are very much under reported. I do believe with their low carbon footprint, low environmental impact and high levels of competition that in time sport cycling will be a featured sport. You have Bill Norton’s support. |
| Hope | District | Susan Ann | Johnston | MAYOR | Yes I am very supportive of cycling, I am an advocate for healthy life styles and this is definitely a healthy lifestyle! Count me in!! |
| Invermere | District | Richard | Unger | COUNCILLOR | I am an avid mountain biker and a wannabe road biker. I bike with a varied group of mountain bikers in the Columbia Valley every week during the season and many of us are now biking on the frozen lake in the winter, where we have a 15km track cleared all winter. I advocate building more summer trails, having summer & winter biking events to attract bike tourism, both road, mountain & cycle cross. And ultimately, I would like to see the Columbia Valley become a destination biking scene like Moab |
| Invermere | District | Spring | Hawes | COUNCILLOR | I am certainly a proponent of cycling, in it’s various forms. Having been an avid mountain biker in the past, I appreciate the fun and exercise that biking can provide. In the past, I used a bike exclusively, instead of a car, for commuting, shopping, etc, for an entire summer. Not only is biking enjoyable and healthy, it is environmentally friendly, as you well know. The world would be a better place if more people rode bikes! |
| Invermere | District | Paul | Denchuk | COUNCILLOR | As a city councillor here are some of the initiatives I have supported: - building of a new BMX track in Kamloops - upgrading of Kamloops Bike Ranch (mountain bike terrain park) including paying for a person to maintain the park - 2011 Western Canada Summer Games – road racing - Valleyview corridor bike interchange and railway overpass bridge – $8 million dollars - adoption of the bicycle master plan for the city - funding for preliminary plans for the Summit overpass bicycle bridge and the Peterson creek to downtown corridor improvements - continued funding of bicycle infrastructure with a permanent budget item for improvements If elected, I will continue to support cycling as an important part of transportation, recreation and sport in the City of Kamloops.” |
| Invermere | District | Dave | McGrath | COUNCILLOR | My family and I are avid cyclers and ride cross-country and downhill as often as possible. I fully advocate for creative and collaborative solutions to grow our local trail systems. Outdoor recreation is sacrosanct. Promoting growth in the cycling culture is one of the few things that municipal governments can support that truly promotes societal balance – socially, economically and environmentally. I have met with many interested community members who have shared their thoughts on cycling in our region. My conclusion is that concerns surrounding creating new trails or legitimizing existing trails – be it land related or wildlife concerns are not barriers to stop planning but to start communicating and collaborating to ensuring that we end up with the very best end product…the benefits of growth speak for themselves and I support that growth. |
| Islands Trust | Gambier | Lynn | Leboe | ISLANDS TRUST COUNCILLOR | Cycling. Who can’t remember watching a child ride a tricycle and bell, a bike with training wheels, or a teenager showing the latest amazing tricks?
From leisure to competitive sport, cycling has grown in popularity worldwide. The market for bespoke cycling tours and competitions at all levels is a growth industry in BC. We should be encouraging not only the sport, but dig deeply into the technologies required in the entire supply chain around the sport of cycling, as part of our research and development initiatives. The areas I am a candidate for Trustee – Gambier Island Trust includes islands accessed only by boat. The larger islands have unpaved roads, the smaller islands have only trails. Certainly cycling is used as modes of transportation and recreation year round. I would support cycling races on the larger islands if the residents wished to host these events. |
| Islands Trust | Denman | Kathy | Dunster | ISLANDS TRUST COUNCILLOR | The Islands Trust is a federation of independent local governments which plans land use and regulates development in the trust area. Unlike in other communities where recreation, sport, and culture receive funds from local government taxation, taxes in the Islands Trust Area are only spent on land use planning and the regulation of development.
Denman Island is a small rural island of about 1000 people that is stuck in the middle between two incredibly great places for mountain biking – Hornby Island and Cumberland and most Denman off-road cyclists go to those two communities for their thrills. We also see a lot of cyclists on the road heading to Hornby. Much of our land base is agricultural, and most of our parks and natural areas have been created because of their species and ecosystems at risk whose protection must take priority over recreational uses under our legislated mandate to preserve and protect the island. Despite an Official Community Plan that advocates for cycling as a climate change adaptation, our roads are not particularly safe for road bikes because of the general disregard for the speed limits by drivers racing across Denman to get to the Hornby ferry. I am a proponent of the Slow Islands Movement and a recreational and commuting cyclist. I will work with Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure to ensure that our roads are shared and safe for all (including horseriders). |
| Islands Trust | Galiano | Louise | Decario | ISLANDS TRUST COUNCILLOR | Yes, I definitely support the sport of cycling, as I do walking, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, roller blading, etc. These are all activities that keep us active and healthy.
Here on Galiano Island cycling is a big thing even though out roads are winding and hilly and our trails may be bumpy. Locals can often be seen riding to the stores, the library, the post office …. During tourist season hundreds of cyclists ride to the island and are welcomed. Our community has just finished an Official Community Plan which endorses and maps the Galiano Parks and Recreation plan for trails and beach accesses, many of which allow for cyclists. Some of the more sensitive beach access trails have bicycle racks at the head of the trail for both the convenience of cyclists and the protection of the environment. If you haven’t cycled on Galiano try it out sometime. |
| Kamloops | City | Nancy | Bepple | COUNCILLOR | As a city councillor here are some of the initiatives I have supported: - building of a new BMX track in Kamloops - upgrading of Kamloops Bike Ranch (mountain bike terrain park) including paying for a person to maintain the park - 2011 Western Canada Summer Games – road racing - Valleyview corridor bike interchange and railway overpass bridge – $8 million dollars - adoption of the bicycle master plan for the city - funding for preliminary plans for the Summit overpass bicycle bridge and the Peterson creek to downtown corridor improvements - continued funding of bicycle infrastructure with a permanent budget item for improvements If elected, I will continue to support cycling as an important part of transportation, recreation and sport in the City of Kamloops. |
| Kamloops | City | Dieter | Dudy | MAYOR | As Mayor, i would continue to promote Kamloops as the Tournament Capital of Canada. In doing so we would be looking for all manner of sporting events to hold here including cycling. Cycling events of any kind are well suited to Kamloops as our topography lends itself to mountain biking, tour type races etc. Thank you for your interest. Dieter Dudy |
| Kamloops | City | Tina | Lange | COUNCILLOR | I am a two term councillor running for my third term .. Kamloops is canada’s tournament capital … we have hosted some amazing bike events… as this is prime mountain biking country we do a lot to encourage the sport … as well we have our bike ranch ….we just recently rezoned a big piece of property to put in a larger bmx track which will give better facilities and enough parking for the competition… cycling is big in kamloops and i intend to keep it that way… thanks for the opportunity to let you know how we support cycling in kamloop |
| Kamloops | City | Raymond | Nyuli | COUNCILLOR | I was on the Kamloops Parks and Recreation Commission when the first phase of the Kamloops Bike Ranch was designed and constructed. I fully supported the project. http://www.kamloopsbikeranch.com/ The site now includes a downhill course, BMX track, cross country course and jump park. The downhill course is a popular destination for Canadian and international riders. Kamloops hosted the Western Canada Summer Games this August and I was a volunteer at the cycling competitions. I helped with site setup and takedown and spent most of the time supporting race timing during the road and cross-country races. It was great to see some of Canada’s best young cyclists competing including one of our local female club members who finished 3rd on GC. The City of Kamloops has a Bicycle Advisory Committee and a Bicycle Master Plan. We budget $500,000 per year for cycling support. On a per capita basis, this is more than most cities in the country. Most of this is targeted for improved bike routes. I support the plan and the budget. http://www.kamloops.ca/transportation/tp-bicycleplan.shtml One of my goals on Council is to implement a public/private partnership to build and operate secure bike storage and related facilities to support cyclists who commute to work in our downtown area. Refer to www.RaymondNYULI.com In summary, I support and advocate for all aspects of cycling including recreation, commuting and competition. This has been demonstrated by my past actions and I commit to continuing to do so after elected. |
| Kamloops | City | Brendan | Shaw | COUNCILLOR | After growing up in Langley, B.C., one of my favourite pastimes was mountain biking the trails at Fort Langley and bmxing at the dirt BMX parks throughout the city. I remember the adrenaline rush racing around the track and flying over little kickers. I remember the comradery we had filming eachother ride, taking photos off kickers, and staying with an active lifestyle. I remember being that guy that over estimated a gap resulting in a torn MCL. This sport isn’t just a part of me, it is me. When I moved to Kamloops, I tried downhill mountain biking for the first time and immediately fell in love. Every year I travel around the Kamloops area to places such as Sun Peaks and ride trails such as the Rio in Valleyview. I’ve found that Kamloops is a mecca for downhill and has been featured in hundreds of mountain biking videos. It’s up to us to expand on the solid foundation before us. All in all, I am a big supporter of an active lifestyle. Regardless of what happens with this election, make sure you come and see what Kamloops/Sun Peaks has to offer for cycling! |
| Kamloops | City | John | Noakes | COUNCILLOR | Cycling is a great form of exercise and also can provide an exciting level of competition. Every aspect of sport cycling should be promoted and certainly, the City of Kamloops should embrace cycling sport competition as part of its overall plan for continuing to be the Tournament Capital! My wife and I like to ride our bikes on a recreational level but in all honesty, neither of us feel safe using the roadways. Regardless of what we may try to promote in the way of “education”, most drivers simply are not courteous to cyclists. I praise the work of previous councils and committees in developing our Rivers Trails and hope that we can continue along that approach to provide safe recreational access for cyclists. John Noakes, Candidate for Council in Kamloops |
| Kimberley | City | Patricia (Paddy) | Weston | COUNCILLOR | Yes I am enthusiastically in favor of promoting Cycling events. |
| Kimberley | City | Darryl | Oakley | COUNCILLOR | As a candidate in the Kimberley municipal election, I fully support Kimberley becoming the destination of choice for mountain biking holidays and events. Kimberley has phenomenal potential for mountain bike events – it’s virtually untapped. Go CyclingBC! |
| Kimberley | City | Don | McCormick | COUNCILLOR | The trail systems that cycling enthusiasts are responsible for creating are a tremendous asset for communities like Kimberley. I am an enthusiastic advocate for this sport. |
| Lake Country | Okanagan Centre | Lisa | Cameron | COUNCILLOR | As an avid mountain biker, I wholeheartedly support the growth of the sport of cycling in my community.
In particular I support: I understand the benefits of cycling, along with other sports, in building strong and healthy communities. |
| Lake Country | At-Large | Jamie | McEwan | COUNCILLOR | Cycling is extremely important to me, and making the roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists is my first platform point. It’s unfortunate that this is the first e-mail that I have received from your organization. |
| Lake Country | Okanagan Centre | Jeremy | Blaskovits | COUNCILLOR | As an active youth, I was involved in many sports and was fortunate enough to ride my bike all over Lake Country to get to games. Biking is a great way to have fun while being healthy, active and getting where you need to go. In the future I would love to see some widening of shoulders on busy roads to help with road sharing and some more trails on park land, like the ones at jack seaton park. |
| Langley | Township | Bert | Chen | COUNCILLOR | As a member of the Greater Langley Cycling Coalition, I am working hard on a personal level to promote cycling in Langley, and advocate not only the health benefits of cycling, but the sustainability advantages.
I will continue to work hard on this front with my fellow Cycling Coalition members beyond the mere Council table. |
| Langley | Township | Rick | Manuel | COUNCILLOR | I am totally in favour of biking as a sport and recreation way to keep fit and means of transportation. While I personally won’t be on any cross-country tours in the near future I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t support your cause. Put me down as a supporter please. |
| Langley | Township | Tony | Malyk | COUNCILLOR | I absolutely support the growth of cycling in the Township of Langley. Our trails, roadways and terrain make for a great cycling experience that enhances the quality of life of our citizens and promotes economic activity by becoming a cycling destination to visitors. |
| Langley | Township | Rick | Green | MAYOR | I believe the Township of Langley has demonstrated that we embrace the sport of cycling in all it’s disciplines. Further to that, we have opened up our local equine group association to jointly embrace this discipline. In addition, we are looking at a large multi use facility that could facilitate BMX and Motocross. |
| Langley | Township | Wayne | Crossen | COUNCILLOR | I do support the growth of cycling as a sport. I do support the idea of cycling receiving funding on an equal basis to other similar sized sports within the community. |
| Langley | Township | Sonya | Paterson | COUNCILLOR | I fully support everything to do with cycling….of all kinds!!!
I support all levels of cycling completion. Several years ago I founded an organization called DreamSports to assist Canadian Athletes. Long story…did lots of work on this and put a lot of money out to help athletes. I commit to you and your members that if elected I would do all I could for your sport and to advocate for the sport of cycling (road, mountain biking, BMX, & cycle-cross) to receive comparable support to that offered to similar sized sports in Langley. You can count on my support. |
| Langley | Township | Steve | Ferguson | COUNCILLOR | Supported the construction of BMX tracks for many years in Langley Supported the construction of Mountain bike parks in Langley Supported mult-purpose bike parks and construction in Langley Support bike and multi-purpose trails |
| Langley | City | Randy | Caine | COUNCILLOR | Thanks for contacting me on this matter. I could now tell you that “if elected I will support you and cycling” but in all honesty I am quite unfamiliar with the sports surrounding cycling. In a general sense however I would be pleased to share my views. I do believe that sports in our communities are sadly unfunded. In fact, programs that integrate youth into our communities have been lacking for years. I feel that this short-sighted approach to fiscal election pandering is the primary reason behind youth delinquency. As a parent I witnessed the pressures placed on duel wage families and yet little is socially available for our children after school. Not that I am suggesting these outlets as an obligation on the behalf of the community to “babysit” our children, rather I see sports as a value rich outlet that needn’t place a financial burden on the already burdened. Sports need to be accessible to all and if the sport of cycling is requested by our community we must find ways to make it so. |
| Langley | City | Rudy | Storteboom | COUNCILLOR | The City of Langley is a very popular cycling center and destination. Our new, professionally crafted Penzer Bike Park is a big success with cycling enthusiasts.
Here, in the City of Langley, we have a terrific trail network that runs through the entire width of our city that is especially well-suited to cycling. We have a cycling network that has been developed and is being implemented throughout our entire city. Road reconstruction always includes a cycling consideration. Even the popular Langley Good Times Cruise-In features a cycling component. Our level downtown core has been host to numerous cycling events and marathons. The City of Langley closed the streets in our city center for these activities to accommodate special cycling events. I look forward to hosting more such events in the future. |
| Langley | City | Teri | James | COUNCILLOR | The City of Langley supports all types of sports, and although we do not have a formal BMX or cycling track, the sport of cycling is included in our annual Tri-It Triathlon and we recently built a bike skills park in our community.
I see absolutely no reason to not agree to support the growth of cycling as a sport in our community. If elected and presented with the opportunity, I would most certainly advocate the sport of cycling to receive comparable support to that offered to similar sized sports in our community. |
| Langley | City | Rosemary | Wallace | COUNCILLOR | Yes I support Cyling British Columbia. |
| Langley | Township | Murray | Jones | COUNCILLOR | I not only support the sport of cycling but as president of the Langley Speedway Historical Society, I have promoted the sport. The Speedway has twice hosted a veledrome event and we hope that will continue to happen. |
| Langley | City | Catfish | Potesta | COUNCILLOR | PORT, no matter what form, is SPORT. I would definitely advocate for cycling or any other form of activity that gets people,( but mostly young children) off the couch and putting their texting on hold for a few hours. Langley City has recently built and also upgraded the terrain at Penzer Park on the West side of 200th Street under the BC Hydro Right of Way power Lines. Prior to that the only other similar local park was the BMX Track up in Brookswood next to the Langley Civic Centre, now known as George Preston Recreation Centre. When I used to live down the street from it, participants from all over used to show up for competitions in their motorhomes and pitch tents, (today such an event, would of been called Occupy Brookswood). If you walk or bike around Langley City, they have gone to the costly expense of building and expanding many trails, with the appropriate mix of compacted crush rock for proper tire contact and ride stability, which will last for years to come, as long as we properly budget for maintenance. |
| Langley | Township | Bob | Long | COUNCILLOR | The Township of Langley fully supports cycling in all it’s forms! |
| Langley | Township | Mel | Kositsky | MAYOR | During my 18 years on Council, The Township of Langley has become a “cycle friendly” place. Mostly recreational cycling but we are now marking commuter lane markings on the urban roadway.
We have had a BMX park for a longtime, have two mountain bike parks, and connect with bicycle friendly park trails in the Metro Vancouver parks systems. As well cyclists enjoy our rural setting to stage major cycling events and road races. |
| Langley | Township | Dan | Sheel | COUNCILLOR | I have been involved with building two bike parks. One in aldergrove and the other. At the langley event center |
| Langley | Township | Tyler | deBoer | COUNCILLOR | I do support cycling in the community. As a person who enjoys cycling, I will definitely advocate for activities such a cycling to promote a healthy life style in our community. As I am not an expert with regard to cycling please provide me with some input in how you think we can further the sport of cycling in our community. I feel this us a good place to start our dialogue if I were to be elected. |
| Langley | City | Dave | Hall | COUNCILLOR | My family has been actively involved in the cycling community for years. My son and daughter are both competitive triathletes at the elite level. As a family we have competed locally in a variety of triathlons and my son most recently competed in the U.S. nationals in Buffalo. As part of his training he has participated in both the Fraser Valley spring series and the U.B.C. Crits. Obviously we are supportive of the sport. A decade ago my wife and I helped to revitalize the Langley City tri-it Triathlon. I advocated for 10 years for a youth park and that finally materialized at Penzer Park. As Chair of the Parks and Environment Committee I am well aware of Cycling advocacy for dedicated routes and trails.I would like to see youth granted earlier exposure and experience at the Burnaby Velodrome and wonder if there is transportation/financial support to allow those in the Fraser Valley to be initiated to the thrills of track racing? Its been a busy time. |
| Langley | Township | Jack | Froese | MAYOR | I support and encourage sport in Langley. I have seen the growth of cycling throughout the Township over the last several years. Making the Township of Langley more cycling friendly benefits both the community by bringing more business to Langley and the cycling enthusiasts. I will be working towards including safer street designs that incorporate safety for cyclists and working with tourism Langley to promote cycling in Langley.
A new 10 year plan for Sport, Recreation and Culture will be prepared in 2012. I would like to see the sport of cycling included in the assessment of sport in Langley. I hope this helps to answer some of your concerns. Once I am Mayor I would like to meet with your association to see how Langley Township can better work with you. |
| Langley | Township | David | Davis | COUNCILLOR | Yes I support cycling . I own a bike myself (a commuters bike from Holland) that I ride into Milner to get my mail as well as into Fort Langley for exercise. My doctor told me that I needed more ex cerise and he suggested a bike. Since I have started riding my blood pressure and stress level have gone down . I definitely support an activity that gets people up and off the couch. |
| Langley | Township | Carey Ann | Poitras | COUNCILLOR | I am a candidate in the Township of Langley, and I do support cycling as a sport. And would like to add a reply to your list. |
| Langley | Township | Carla | Robin | COUNCILLOR | I am fully supportive of the sport of cycling and its disciplines. It is an affordable, sustainable activity and sport that everyone can participate in and helps create healthy bodies and healthy minds, which in turn foster the same in a community. The Township of Langley has excellent facilities, roads and trails for the cycling enthusiast and cyclists from throughout the Lower Mainland come to Langley to enjoy it’s terrain and rural atmosphere. As Langley is increasing its profile in Sport Tourism, cycling is going to become a major component of our sports family. |
| Lillooet | District | Ted | Anchor | MAYOR | Well we have the space for this type of recreation. I look forward to promoting cycling in the Lillooet area. |
| Maple Ridge | District | Robert | Masse | COUNCILLOR | I am an active sports participant and a health care provider, and I a keen supporter of amateur sports and exercise. I 2009 I completed 5 years as Race Director of the local Vistas Run, and I am very familiar with what goes into putting on these kind of events. Though cycling is not my personal activity, I do advise it for many of my patients. To answer your question: I will help assure that our roads, trails and facilities are available for events. I would be pleased and proud to see Maple Ridge support |
| Maple Ridge | District | Graham | Mowatt | COUNCILLOR | I am not very up to speed as to the amount of support your organization has in Maple Ridge, however as a former captain on the Albion Ferry, I am very aware of the support cycling has in the Lower Mainland. I support cycling as a sport and would be willing to give it the support that the numbers of participants would warrant. Maple Ridge has supported many sports in the past with minimal supporters and I believe cycling has a greater level of support, if not now then in the near future. I would be more than open to being educated by your organization if elected. I must add however, that I am running on a restricting of the policy of raising taxes as I believe the local taxpayers are “taxed out”.. This does not, however negate the support of your organization and the enhancement of cycling in Maple Ridge by requiring incorporation of cycling lanes/paths in future development projects, large and small. |
| Maple Ridge | District | Alex | Pope | COUNCILLOR | Yes, I support cycling receiving comparable funding to other sports.
The Local Ride Bike Shop in Maple Ridge offers a couple races in Maple Ridge (Race the Ridge, Pumpkin Cross) and one in Pitt Meadows (Barry’s Roubaix). Events like this have a positive financial effect in the area in which they are held. The Race the Ridge Criterium, located in the Maple Ridge downtown core, is especially beneficial to our community, generating a crowd of spectators and participants that also patronize our local shops and restaurants. I would like to see a continuing support of events like this in Maple Ridge. I am also proposing, as part of my election platform, that Maple Ridge allocate 3% of the transportation services budget for improving our local cycling infrastructure. A safe cycling environment is essential for the use of cycling for both transportation and recreation for people of all ages and abilities. |
| Maple Ridge | District | Peter | Tam | COUNCILLOR | You can see that my platform absolutely support cycling sports. 1) The type of business our economic drivers will focus on is eco-tourism, which includes all cycling sports. 2) the Economic reform I am proposing include the prioritization of capital funding project. I believe this sport can grow and we will foster that growth so that it can be a part of our contributor to our local economy. I would go as far as creating an annual tour de Maple Ridge advocating for road shut downs to accommodate the race thru our streets.
I am a down hill biker, road biker, kids did BMX. I like to see how we can expand on existing trail up at BCIT woodlot. And consider biking as a main stream mode of transportation. |
| Maple Ridge | District | John | McKenzie | COUNCILLOR | I fully support cycling |
| Merritt | City | Shelley | Sanders | COUNCILLOR | I certainly support the sport of cycling and would like to see more trails built in and around the city of Merritt. Cycling is a great sport that is easily accessible to many and the health benefits are obvious. I understand your organization is the governing body for all the racing disciplines of cycling so I assume you are looking for support for racing venues. I think that Merritt would be a great host community for such events and I would be happy to advocate for any group who wishes to come to Merritt and avail themselves of our facilities. |
| Midway | Village | Chris | Robinson | COUNCILLOR | I would support growth of cycling in the community of Midway. Midway is mile 0 on the kettle valley bike trail, and several people each summer travel the trail. It would be an honour to welcome any events you have planned. |
| Midway | Village | Gary | Schierbeck | COUNCILLOR | I fully SUPPORT cycling and encourage it.I support and encourage the use of the Trails in our area for bicycles, I do not support motorized vehicles on these trails. |
| Mission | District | Tom | Armstrong | COUNCILLOR | I believe in all sports for all ages. cycling is no difference. Cyclists should have same support and recognition as other sports. |
| Mission | District | Arnold | Muir | COUNCILLOR | For the record, I am an avid cyclist, and I ride whenever possible. Although nowadays, I’m more inclined to simply ride around the streets of Mission, I still enjoy the challenge of a trail. At the age of 57, I simply can’t ride like I used to; Sadly, I still suffer the consequences of being hit by a motorist on my mountain bike in Surrey a number of years ago. That aside, you probably know that Mission district spent a scandalous sum of money on bike route signage on the pretext that it would make cycling in Mission safer. I personally thought that the whole thing was a waste of money and their reasoning a load of crap. I publicly criticized the project in the Mission Record. In my view, the signage is meaningless. Signs don’t necessarily make a particular road safer. I haven’t talked to one cyclist in this town who did not think the signage was anything short of ridiculous. No funds were earmarked for new bike paths or upgrades, which would have made a great deal more sense. The money wasted on signage could have been better spent on improvements that would have truly benefited cyclists in Mission. You may or may not agree with me; read the article and see what you think.
All this aside, if elected, I will support your organization in any way I can. I know that Mission is popular with cyclists, but it could possibly become a cycling Mecca with adequate investment and marketing. If I am successful and elected to council, bring me your ideas. I’d like to make them work for you. |
| Mission | District | Shelley | Clarkson | COUNCILLOR | I am very supportive of cycling sports. Here in Mission we have some great venues for mountain biking and road racing. I think more can be done in our community for this sport. We need to engage a greater number of families in the area and create safe venues. |
| Mission | District | Rhett | Nicholson | COUNCILLOR | I’m not up to date on what other cities are doing with BMX tracks and Velodromes; but i’m very open minded. I am an avid supporter of youth and My goal is really create a youth friendly enviroment so this sounds right up my alley. One thing I will be supporting is Mountain biking tracks. I love the idea of competions; maybe even one day Hosting Crankworx. |
| Mission | District | Lee | Hanlon | COUNCILLOR | I do support the sport of cycling. |
| Mission | District | Paul | Hockridge | COUNCILLOR | We are looking at hosting a major “Road Cycling” event, & are now trying to firm up the event, stay tuned.
I wholeheartedly endorse ANY sporting function whatsoever, and it really doesn’t matter WHAT that sport is (Within reason). ALL sport activities that promote healthy activity, sportsmanship, and character building should be treated equally and encouraged. When elected, I only need to be asked and I will endeavour to expedite and endorse in any way that I can. |
| Mission | District | Ted | Adlem | MAYOR | As a Mayoral Candidate in the Mission Election I believe that it is part of my role as a civic leader to endorse physical activity and all the benefits that it includes. The benefit to the environment, the being gentle to the earth, and the possibility to see parts of the natural environment that you would be unable to see in a car is so important. The Sport of Cycling, both as a competitive level and recreational brings people together and must be supported. |
| Mission | District | Daniel | Williamson | MAYOR | I thought cycling was a well accepted sport and activity. I have 2 bikes and my wife has one (she also has a very old one speed her dad bought her in her preteen years) The major problem I have using a bike to go to work is time. Of course who has enough of that.
Of course I would advocate cycling as a “supported” sport Lottery fund grants should be given to cycle organizations just like any other sport. Also I think that cycling should be integrated into overall traansportation planning. |
| Nanaimo | City | Jim | Routledge | MAYOR | As an avid cyclist myself, I have always been a big supporter of all the cycling sports. Bike to Work week was a highlight this year with over 100km personally. At the moment, I confess that I don’t know exactly how the City spends its “sporting” dollars but I certainly want to make sure that those monies are allocated fairly and proportionately. I am particularly interested in encouraged young people to get out and move and participate in sports. Cycling is one that I highly advocate. |
| Nanaimo | City | Zeni | Maartman | COUNCILLOR | As a parent of young man who was an avid BMX rider as a child, and a mountain biker as a young adult and still to this day, I would have to say I absolutely, wholeheartedly support cycling for a number of reasons. I will start with the children. Not all children are as comfortable in team sports as they are competing at an individual level. Nanaimo has a very strong BMX club which I am sure you are aware of. I was a single parent, and my son and his friend together built their bicycles from new and used parts. How, I will never know, but they figured it out together, piece by piece. The BMX practices and races, gave my son the experience of working with others, having fun competing, and developed a life long love of cycling.
As a teenager and young adult he helped build mountain biking trails. We need to encourage all of us to get out and ” ride our bikes” more often. For exercise and for the environment. Instead of driving to the corner store, we should be riding our bikes!! When I am on City Council, I will continue to support our local bicycle associations. |
| Nanaimo | City | Rod | Lomas | COUNCILLOR | Cycling fits well into my civic election platform and vision for the Nanaimo of Tomorrow; as well as Nanaimo’s (OCP) Official Community Plan goals of building a more sustainable Community; to encourage social enrichment; promoting a thriving economy; improving mobility and servicing and working towards a sustainable Nanaimo. Cycling of course cannot achieve these goals on its own, rather it can and will form a component part just as the famous Bathtub Races have attested.
Nanaimo has not yet gone through the process of an official “visioning” process; indeed, there are other communities with a head-start in this respect. However, the seeds have been sown in a Visioning Rally that took place at the Vancouver Island Convention centre October 5th, 2011 (a start); and, a Civic election to be decided Nov 19th, 2011 with candidate platforms and a vision such as my own. The City of Nanaimo – the Harbour City – is already considered a “hub” city; moreover, it is Nanaimo’s geographic location and harbour setting that places it well to move into the future as “The Hub” of Vancouver Island in transportation of all respects; human powered (cycling & pedestrian), Sea, Rail and Air connecting Vancouver Island to the world. It is my earnest hope that the Nanaimo of Tomorrow includes cycling in all its forms (Road, Mountain biking, BMX, Cyclo-cross etc.) as centre pieces of attraction – not unlike that of the Bathtub races and the Van Isle 360 sailing race (starting point Nanaimo 2011) and a host of other such events that keep Nanaimo as the centre of attention and helping us as a community become more prosperous, sustainable and enriched in our social texture. Perhaps even a fame equal to the Tour-de-France; in our own Canadian & Island way. The first task at hand is to be elected to council; in this I ask the support of the Nanaimo electorate that forms part of your 13,748 plus e-newsletter subscribers at the polls Nov 19th, 2011. Cycle; push, pull or drag a friend to VOTE with you. |
| Nanaimo | City | Roger | McKinnon | MAYOR | Cycling is enjoyed throughout our community by all ages and proficiency levels. We have wonderful, flat cycling trails that follow our Parkway and main thoroughfares that lead from the suburbs to downtown and facilitiate those who wish to cycle for work. For years, the city’s energetic volunteer Maria Davison, her family and volunteer supporters promoted and built BMX racing and a great regional facility where thousands of children have participated competitively, and then taken their skills and talents around BC and the USA in friendly competition. Furthermore, our forest trails provide an amazing natural environment and courses for mountain bikers while several groomed and configured runs and areas promote ‘secret’ cyclo-cross destinations. I support Nanaimo continuing its position in Cycling to build it up as a sports destination and increase its effectiveness as a transportation mode — a challenge for a city with the physical size and shape of ours. |
| Nanaimo | City | Peter | Ramsay | COUNCILLOR | I am in full support of all things with two wheels and self powered. We should always encourage more people to choose health and environment over conventional transportation. In Nanaimo we have an extensive and beautiful bike trail through the city. Citizens are encouraged to ride to work and/ or around town and have a safe way to get there. Nanaimo also has bike lanes and signage. As a matter of fact my neighbour regularly rides to work. The first part of the journey is a very steep hill. First thing, I very often drive by her in the middle of the hill with my pick-up and feel that we are on different ends of the spectrum. My family also has friends that utilize Nanaimo’s BMX racing track. Their children have raced for years. I would hope, If elected to City Council, Nanaimo could adopt a more mountain biking/ racing attitude. |
| Nanaimo | City | Ted | Greves | COUNCILLOR | I do support biking and am a cyclist myself. I road a mountain bike in the trails of Mount Benson (the Abyss being one), a road bike back and forth to work ( I was a professional firefighter in Nanaimo) and now ride a hybrid bicycle (I’m 60 years old) and find that it suits me. I do support cycling comparably to other sports. Having said that sports are vetted through the Parks and Recreation committee and Commission before it reaches Council and Council acts/votes on their recommendations. |
| Nanaimo | City | Rob | Zver | COUNCILLOR | Thank you for taking the time to advocate on behalf of your organization. I would be in support of working with your organization in attempting to provide the needed facilities so that your organization can continue to grow and succeed in the future. As to hosting events in Nanaimo this would be a win-win for all those involved as this is another way for us to showcase our wonderful cit |
| Nanaimo | City | Trent | Snikkers | COUNCILLOR | Thank you for the opportunity to speak to the sport of cycling in the City of Nanaimo. Mountain biking was one of my two sports of choice as a teenager although I was never that great at it. Cycling is important to daily life as well as being a sport. I currently cycle to work as often as possible and believe that this form of transportation should be supported. I also believe that more cycling as a sport would fit well into the natural environment in Nanaimo with the trails for cross country and the mountains for downhill. I would consider any proposals to grow the sport within our community and I support creating a more active lifestyle for the people of Nanaimo. |
| Nanaimo | F | Skye | Donald | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | I am committed to value-based decision making for our community, and our community has identified that it values supporting the development of pedestrian, equestrian and bicycle paths as part of our local transportation network. If elected to the RDN, I intend to actively advocate for park and trail development in our area. Bike lanes are not currently a practical option on our country roads, but I am open to receiving suggestions from cyclists on other ways that we could make our community more cyclist-friendly. |
| Nanaimo | G | Lance | Pope | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | I totally support bicycling sports and bicycling in general. After traveling to Holland and seeing how they have incorporated separate lanes on highways for bikes, I believe it’s time we start learning from our European cousins and start doing the same here in Canada. I would also like to see expansion of trails that would allow bicyclists to travel from villages to towns and to cities alongside railroad tracks like they have done in Qualicum Beach. |
| Nanaimo | City | Diana | Johnstone | COUNCILLOR | As the Chair of Parks Recreation and Culture Commission and a Recreation practitioner for all my working career I have been very vocal in promoting active Transportation in Nanaimo. To live in a Healthy community is paramount and we can only do that by fostering environments through active living. We have worked hard in Nanaimo to establish a network of trails and green spaces for biking and walking enthusiasts and in fact have made it a priority in our development of transportation plans, rather than cars. By being proactive in this regard we can actually influence people to walk and bike more often, benefiting their health and enhancing the community of Nanaimo. |
| Nanaimo | A | Alec | McPherson | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | I would have supported this as both my wife and I have cycled in parts of Europe – including Ireland, Scotland and France. We both have Green Gear cycles that collapse into a Samonsite suitcase. We also have a full-sized Rockhopper and another aluminum-framed bicycle. While there are some fairly good cycling paths in the City of Nanaimo; albeit, on a paved surface adjoining the railway right of way, we need to travel some 18 kilometres to reach them. On journey is on rural roads that feature an absence of shoulders and drivers unaccustomed to driving on such roads. |
| Nanaimo | City | Gordon | Fuller | COUNCILLOR | While not an avid cyclist, I was in the past, I do recognize the benefits of cycling both as a means of transpot and excersise. Cycling and the rules of such should be encouraged starting at a young age. Nanaimo has some of the best cycling and mountain bike trails in British Columbia. I have used local maps put out by a cycling group for hiking trips into the hills and mountains surrounding Nanaimo, they are by far the best maps available for dong so. I am fully supportive of working to encourage and promote cycling in the community. |
| Nanaimo | City | Gary | Korpan | COUNCILLOR | As an avid cyclist since childhood of course I support and advocate cycling. Especially since my aging knees appreciate me using the bicycle over other exercise. As Mayor, I championed multi-use trail ways that allowed cyclists safe alternatives to narrow roads in Nanaimo. Now Nanaimo is renowned for its extensive system. Whenever we upgraded roads we also added hundreds of kilometers of marked cycling lanes. Cycle routes were implemented to assist. I used my BC Carbon rebate to buy an electric bike to assist me weary old knees over our many hills. Great exercise, great transportation, great for health, and great for the environment |
| Nanaimo | F | Julian | Fell | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | ANY ALTERNATIVE TO fossil fuel usage has to be welcome, as well as being healthy. My community, Errington-Coombs is putting in a series of off road trails along unused road allowances. Also Errington has hosted Island Hammerfest events in the past. I believe there was a disruption caused by some bureaucratic nonsense, but if elected I will promote this sort of thing locally when/where appropriate. |
| Nelson | City | Paula | Kiss | COUNCILLOR | my position on the sport of cycling is STRONGLY SUPPORTIVE. I used to be a mountain bike guide in Guatemala and moved to Nelson, in part, to enjoy the biking this area has to offer. I recently discovered and fell in love with road biking after a serious injury lead me to seek out something two-wheeled that was less risky. (I don’t bounce as well as I used to)
I plan to find every opportunity to promote cycling not only as a means of recreation by a viable form of transportation. I have never owned a car but always owned at least one bicycle and lots of good shoes and boots. Active transportation and recreation is my definition of quality of life. |
| New Westminster | City | Susan | Wandell | COUNCILLOR | Cycling is a great activity and I recognize that it is a growing sport. New Westminster supports cycling and already has dedicated biking paths (the Crosstown Greenway). If elected I would continue to support this sport and treat is with the same considerations as other similar sized sporting activities/opportunities in our City. |
| New Westminster | City | Vladimir | Krasnogor | COUNCILLOR | One of my nominations is from a very active and strong bicycle supporters – Andrew from NWEP. I was the person who originated and “pushed thru” the No-Idling bylaw in New Westminster. As director – and Founding member of NWEP – I am in good position to understand the importance You may be assured of my support for these issues at City Council. We will have a very significant election this year. I trust your members share my support for less cars than more cars, for more green spaces than more concrete, better livability than worse traffic congestion. |
| New Westminster | City | Jaimie | McEvoy | COUNCILLOR | Cycling is a great sport, and I’m a cyclist myself.I’ve long advocated for city support for cycling as part of our city’s commitment to healthy activity. Our new bike trails in the city and our new all-wheel park are solid examples of this commitment! A fully engaging, accessible and healthy sport, cycling deserves our full support! |
| North Vancouver | City | Yashar | Khalighi | COUNCILLOR | I very much support sports as part of a healthy lifestyle. As Cycling BC is a provincial organization ,participation rates in cycling as a sport are going to vary based on demographics and interest in the sport from municipality to municipality. As Cycling BC did not provide participation rates for the City of North Vancouver in the sport, I can only say that while I heartily endorse a healthy lifestyle through sports, my level of support for Cycling BC would be contingent on the level of interest demonstrated by the North Vancouver City residents. |
| North Vancouver | City | Ron | Polly | MAYOR | Love biking.. Saved Mosquito Creek park from being bulldozed and developed with the help a very few dedicated people..
Believe that partnerships and adoption of trials for bike use can be done.. Trials kept up by groups instead of letting them go to ruin. Sporting events are great for all. Brings so many possitives .. I pushed for the Skate Park in the City of North Van years ago, Also pushed to get it were it is today. I do not want to loose it when Harry Jerome is redone . It was hard enough to get it finally . Rod Clark worked hard on that also.. As for the future of rec facilities we need far more input and far more will to get them in place that has happened in the past six years.. That is one of the reasons I have put myself here..Now I need help.. The machine that is against me is very well funded and managed . Take a look at last election campaign disclosures.. Tells a story in it self.. The only way that is going to happen is if people get out and vote who do not do so. Time to make changes.. We can’t keep sitting on the side lines as public lands are sold off and we get little in return. |
| North Vancouver | District | Lisa | Muri | COUNCILLOR | I have a good relationship with the cycling community in my municipality….first elected in 1996, I spearheaded a campaign to stop a 2500 unit housing development on the lower slopes on Seymour Mt. The mountain bike community was a paramount partner in that campaign…..and the trails remain today…..NSMBA works with the District of North Vancouver to maintain these trails….Inter River Park, boast a BOX Track, and we also have an active commuter cyclist community…….we have been working hard to continue to implement out bicycle master plan. And we have been supportive towards bike events etc. I am very supportive of alternative forms of transportation, both for work and play. |
| North Vancouver | District | Robin | Hicks | COUNCILLOR | In North Vancouver District we support a number of biking initiatives. We have an avid mountain bike community on the local mountains which is known world wide. We work in partnership with the Mountain Bike Society in building and maintaining designated trails. We have also supported a BMX park and various trails for casual biking (Richard Jurin trail). We do though have to balance funding and use with other recreational pursuits such as hikers and naturalists. |
| Oak Bay | District | Nils | Jensen | MAYOR | I am an avid cyclist and bike commuter. For the past seven years I’ve done summer cycling tours in BC and Europe. On average I cycle about 3,500 km a year.
So you can be assured I support all forms of cycling. In the past few years Oak Bay has supported cycle races and tours. If elected I will continue to be an avid supporter of sport cycling. |
| Oak Bay | District | Michelle | Kirby | COUNCILLOR | I am a commuter cyclist that rides downtown year round to and from work in the Fort Street cycle lane. Although we cycle together, I would do more cycling with my family if I felt my kids were safe to travel with me. The greatest weakness in Oak Bay’s cycling infrastructure is the lack of cycling lanes on major routes, and signage directing cyclists to lesser known flatter, quieter routes. I would support and advocate phased implementation of CRD Master Pedestrian and Cycling Master Plan, in conjunction with recent Boulevard active transportation plan for Oak Bay. By prioritizing bicycles and walking before cars, we will be able to spend infrastructure dollars on new bike lanes, racks, and encourage a growing cycling movement that will attract tourists back to Oak Bay. |
| Oliver | Town | Patrick | Hampson | MAYOR | I am a past jogger and Sea Wall runner so supporting any kind of athletic event in our community is pretty much a “no brainer” for me provided we can meet the venue requirements of the organizers. We will continue to support any activity which increases physical fitness and brings revenue to Oliver. We are part of the Subaru Ironman Canada route and our volunteers are ready to assist during ra |
| Oliver | Town | Ronald | Ethier | COUNCILLOR | Yes I support biking |
| Osoyoos | Town | Michael | Ryan | COUNCILLOR | I am a cyclist myself and strongly support cycling.
Osoyoos annually supports a Half-Iron Man event and cooperates with the Penticton Iron Man via volunteers and the use of highways in our boundaries. In the past year we have supported an initiative for developing a BMX track on Town owned land. Council, with my encouragement, is worked with the Min of Trans. to make Hwy 3 by widening the bridge between the east and west areas of town. We also developed a lot for boat trailers to remove them from the “motel strip” road and make it safer for cyclists. We have developed a series of trails through town for walking and cycling. We have plans in our 2012 business plan to develop bike lanes and a bike route throughout the Town. |
| Osoyoos | Town | Stu | Wells | MAYOR | I strongly support all cycling disciplines, and am very interested in cycling tours through the Okanagan Desert Wine Country. I see the potential for this to become a strong economic driver along with all the normally recognized cycling attributes. Thanks for the opportunity. |
| Parksville | City | Peter | Simkin | COUNCILLOR | As an avid cyclist, albeit recreactional and health benefits, I do enjoy the sport of cycling and can appreciate the benefits of promoting it in our community. I understand we do host a variety of cycling events in this that are sucessful, I am unaware at what level the city currently participates. I would be pleased to be an advocate for this cause. All sports that have the potential to increase participation and showcase our city deserve this support. |
| Peace River | E | Jerrilyn | Schembri | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | I consider myself fortunate to come from a community that is an active community. We all know the value of being an active person, and this community not only supports being active, it embraces it. The community of Tumbler Ridge hosts the amazing annual Emperors Challenge Mountain race as well as supporting hiking trails, climbing, canoeing and kayaking and of course cycling.
Who doesn’t love cycling? A major event in the life of any child is the day the training wheels come off of their bike. Remember the excitement the first time you pedalled down the driveway unassisted, and it only got better from there. Not only is cycling a sustainable way to get from point A to point B, cycling is freedom to a child, cycling is excitement to a BMX rider, cycling is a rush to a mountain biker, cycling is a fantastic exercise for someone trying to lose weight and cycling is fun for all ages. I support initiatives which enhance activities such as cycling and encourage residents to be involved in their community’s OCP(Official Community Plan) process. The OCP is where design and planning begins for communities and things such as bike lanes and trails should be part of this document. I do, however, believe that it isn’t the place of a Council or Regional Board to initiate but rather to support healthy active choices. |
| Peachland | District | Lee | Sawchuk | MAYOR | Good Morning Keith, Having grown up with sports my entire life, I for one believe every community should be supportive of cycling, whether it be cycling as an alternative means of transportation or being riden in competition or being riden as recreation. One thing I DO stress though is that the cyclists who do ride on our streets need to improve their knowledge on the laws of the road when it comes to riding their bike on the road, I witness far too many inconsiderate riders who think they can dart in and out of traffic like they were on foot. Education for cyclists is paramount for their safety. |
| Pemberton | Village | Jessica | Turner | COUNCILLOR | We have a BMX track in Pemberton that is close to being a functional track that could add to recreational activities in our community, especially for our youth. It would be great to bounce some ideas off yourself or if you can pass me along to someone knowledgable in the world of BMX. We have few keen people that would like to see something happen & I have a new BMX bike in my garage that I’d like to put to use this coming spring. |
| Penticton | City | Terry | Yeatman | COUNCILLOR | I am a SUPPORTER |
| Penticton | City | Burga | Black | COUNCILLOR | I think Penticton falls into the category of having a great track record for cycling. Penticton has hosted many events for cyclists. Certainly I would vote for continued community events for cyclists and Penticton has had this as a priority but, given the current decline in coucil budgets, we must priorize some events. Hopefully this is a temporary situation and as our jobs and budgets begin to increase, we can continue to support the many venues cycling affords our community. |
| Penticton | City | Vic | Powell | MAYOR | The city of Penticton has always supported sporting events and will continue to do so. |
| Penticton | City | Andrew | Jakubeit | COUNCILLOR | While on council negociated to get the Axel Merckx GranFondo to Penticton. I’ve pushed for more bike lanes and improvements to our bike network. I pushed for Sport Tourism and Outdoor Adventurism to be priorities for the City. Yes I’m a strong advocate (and I cycle too). |
| Penticton | City | Gary | Leaman | COUNCILLOR | Cycling is a personal issue for me and my family. I am the person responsible for bringing the existing bike lanes to Penticton on Government/ Skaha Lake Road when I was on Council previously. In 2006, I sent a map to the City showing a recommended bicycle route from Skaha Park to Safeway, using side streets, parks, public lands, a foot bridge etc. All that would be needed is paint and signage. Nothing has happened to it yet. . . Please check out my blog post http://garyscityview.blogspot.com/2011/11/of-trails-and-tourism.html to see what I envision for bike route possibilities. I have proposed paving of the former Kettle Valley Railway bed from Penticton to OK Falls. It could be the Okanagan’s answer to the Stanley Park Seawall. I was chair of the City’s Transportation Advisory committee for three years, and know the issues and challenges. Our society focuses entirely too much on the personal automobile. Penticton, particularly in the valley bottom, lends itself well to walking, inline-skating, bicycles, etc. Please also check out the online poll at http://okanaganpolls.ca/ |
| Penticton | City | David | Greenwood | COUNCILLOR | I would definitely advocate for the sport of cycling in Penticton |
| Penticton | City | Kevin | Noonan | COUNCILLOR | Penticton has benefited from many biking events over the years. I will continue this support. |
| Pitt Meadows | City | George | Coghlan | COUNCILLOR | I have responded to a questionnaire from the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition. Here is a link: http://www.rmcyclist.info/2011/10/george-coghlan-candidate-pitt-meadows.html I live in Pitt Meadows, which is a very bicycle-friendly community and make |
| Port Alberni | City | Ted | McGill | COUNCILLOR | I believe that a well organized sporting event promotes a strong community. It also can be very beneficial to the community from a financial aspect, food, lodging etc. Sport cycling has a reputation of being well organized and safe. I believe that promoting cycling or any physical activity in a community is important. |
| Port Alberni | City | Angie | Blake | COUNCILLOR | I am 100% in favorite for the sport of cycling. It is a great sport for fitness. I will always support the sport. |
| Port Coquitlam | City | Ron | McKinnon | COUNCILLOR | Any advocacy of sports on my part must be seen as of the do as I say, not as I do variety. Yet I know the value of sports in a well-rounded, vigorous community, and I have no trouble seeing cycling as a key facet of an holistic recreational program.
As a member of Council I will be pleased to work with you and your affiliated organizations to advance the sport here, and to bring significant cycling events to the city. |
| Port Coquitlam | City | William | Issa | MAYOR | I am very much admire your sport, me and my family love Biking, and we try to do it as much as we can, in port Coquitlam( time permitted). We have primitive Bike lanes in Port Coquitlam, and most of them are not safe for Cycling, there is two lanes are designed as Bike lanes, Coast meridian, and Prairie ave., and a short lane on Dominion, the rest are in future planning, and if we keep the present Mayor he will not have these lanes implemented any time soon.
When i get elected, i pledge to make Port Coquitlam, a safe Cycling City, and designated safe lanes for bikers, and build out doors dirt bike routes, mountain bike tracks around port Coquitlam. |
| Port Coquitlam | City | Chris | Carr | COUNCILLOR | You have my support |
| Port Hardy | District | Alan | Wickens | COUNCILLOR | I am a supporter of cycling and am in favour of initiatives that develop it in the community. Port Hardy does not have a large population but I’m aware that over the years there have been various non-structured groups participating in the sport. Trail/mountain biking has been very popular at times and the annual Tour de Rock starts here and is strongly supported by the residents and the RCMP detatchment. On a more personal note; we are great supporters of our grandchildren knowing how to bike safely and maintain several junior bikes in our basement for the times they come to visit. Thank you for taking the time to poll the candidates and supporting your sport. |
| Port Moody | City | Robert | Simons | MAYOR | As a resident and candidate for Mayor of Port Moody I am very aware of the cycling activities that pass-through our city or are undertaken in the parks of our City. Although our City has a relatively small footprint our location and natural setting provides a wide array of cycling options that residents and visitors take advantage of.
There are multiple cycling facilities and venues in the City which are well used and maintained by City staff and volunteers. I would continue to support the advancement of cycling for both sport and as an environmentally friendly option for transportation. A prime action for Port Moody over the next 12 months will be the completion of its’ Master Cycling Plan’. The plan may not apply to all facets of interest to the Cycling BC but I would encourage your organization to review and provide comment on behalf of your affiliate clubs and their members. |
| Port Moody | City | Rick | Glumac | COUNCILLOR | I am a big supporter of cycling and have been a strong advocate for completion of our city’s Master Cycling Plan while serving on the Transportation Committee. I have stated that I will be advocating for a dedicated bike lane from Port Moody to Sasamat Lake and a pedestrian/cycling overpass from Rocky Point Park to our soon to arrive skytrain station at Moody Street. If elected I will be happy to talk further as I am very supportive of cycling in general and would like to support the sport of cycling. |
| Port Moody | City | Rebecca | Helps | COUNCILLOR | I support all forms of cycling (sport, commuter, leisure…). I would advocate for a similar level of support as provided to other sports in my community. |
| Port Moody | City | Zoe | Royer | COUNCILLOR | Port Moody has the highest ratio of dedicated park land per capita. Most of the parks have fantastic trails for hiking and cycling.
What is sorely lacking in our city is adequate on-road cycling lanes. I understand the explanation I have been given many times that older roads are narrow and expensive to retrofit. But that’s not good enough a reason not to start. Ioco road for example is used by hundreds of cyclists headed to Anmore, Belcarra, Sasamat Lake and White Pine beach, yet it has no provision for on-road cycling. I believe the city needs to work with TransLink and the Province to fund bike lanes in both directions on Ioco Road. The widening of Guildford Way undertaken by Port Moody and Coquitlam was a huge missed opportunity for Port Moody. Guildford Way ended up with dedicated bike lanes in Coquitlam and no cycling amenities in Port Moody. The westbound bike lane just ends at the Port Moody boundary. We can’t let that kind of disconnect between jurisdictions happen again. We also need to widen Guildford Way and build a bike lane to Rocky Point Park. The detailed design of the Evergreen Line is proceeding now. Port Moody Council needs to oversee the fine tuning of pedestrian and biking connections between local traffic and the stations as well as ensure that proper biking facilities are provided at the stations. Thank you again for your commitment to advancing a zero GHG mode of transportation. |
| Port Moody | City | Rosemary | Small | COUNCILLOR | Port Moody is currently working on a Master Cycling Plan. If you check my web site, you will see that I support the implementation.
http://www.rosemarysmall.ca/The_Issues.html You might be interested . Here is the link to our city’s cycling plan. http://www.portmoody.ca/index.aspx?page=390 |
| Port Moody | City | Shane | Kennedy | COUNCILLOR | Thank you for your letter on cycling. If you don’t mind, I would like to give you some background on myself. I have been an on-again, off-again cycling enthusiasm since I was in my late teens. One summer I cycled from Quebec City to Toronto. During my college years, cycling was my main means of transportation. Currently I ride a BRC mountain bike that I purchased some twenty years ago. Currently, there is no major cycling event held in Port Moody which I |
| Port Moody | City | Robert | Vagramov | COUNCILLOR | Thanks for the email! I’d like to proudly say that I love biking and I’ve been involved in almost every style of it growing up.
Growing up I did a lot of mountain biking, and I still love going up the trails to Anmore, and on Burke Mountain as well. I did BMW for a year in middle school but nowadays I wouldn’t be caught dead doing anything but a wheelie. Nowadays, I stick to road biking, usually doing David Avenue from end to end. Sometimes I sneak out my dad’s Specialized full carbon-fibre road bike, but that’s only for special occasions, as I know that a scratch on that thing would cost me my life. In short, I am fully in support of your cause, and I would love to see biking be promoted not just as a mode of transportation, or an alternative to a car, but an actual sport. |
| Port Moody | City | Daniel | Kirchner | COUNCILLOR | I have competed in cross country and downhill mountain bike races as well as triathlons. I also try to incorporate cycling into my commutes where ever possible, sometimes taking rather circuitous routes along my favourite trails to get to my destination!
There are dozens of fantastic mountain biking trails in or near Port Moody – up into Anmore, Eagle Mountain and Burke Mountain.I would love to see some events and races held in this area and would be in full support. For road cycling/transportation, I think it is important that Port Moody complete the Master Cycling Plan. I would like to see collaboration with our neighbouring municipalities so that effective, safe, connecting regional biking routes are established. To answer your question directly, if elected, I would most definitely advocate for the sport of cycling to receive comparable support to that offered to similar sized sports in our community. |
| Prince George | City | Murry | Krause | COUNCILLOR | I am definitely supportive |
| Prince George | City | Dan | Rogers | MAYOR | I have been and will continue to be a strong advocate for increased and safe cycling in and around Prince George. As a champion of our proposed Active Transportation Plan, communter cycling is critcal component of that plan. We recently partnered with the local cycling club and the Province to establish a mountain bike park within city limits. In addition, as Chair of the city’s Trails Task Force, establishing multi use trails that link the city with the great outdoors that surround the city, was a high priority of our final report to Council. Partnering with the province on funding for our cycle network will be a top priority as will lobby efforts to get additional funding placed into the cycle bc program that is managed by BC’s Transporation and Infrastructure Ministry. |
| Prince George | City | Harry | Ulch | COUNCILLOR | We can probably cycle 8 months a year & 4 months of snow. I think cycling is great, our City made cycle lanes; I support hiking trails & bike lanes; trails. |
| Prince George | City | Debora | Munoz | COUNCILLOR | I feel more needs to be done to ensure safety for users of the on-street bike lanes. Too often I have seen vehicles parked in designated bike lanes forcing cyclists to maneuver around the parked vehicles and out into the traffic. Better signage is needed and a more distinctive division between bike lanes and on-street traffic. I support more bike lanes and bike storage facilities throughout Prince George. I feel it is important for the City to continue to expand and develop parks, and open spaces and link them through green corridors and trail development, provide public access to the riverfront areas and continue to enhance cycling opportunities throughout Prince George as part of our Community’s current and long term active transportation plan. |
| Prince George | City | Bruce | Fader | MAYOR | I am indeed in support of cycling, both as a sport and as a means of transportation. In fact if you check my website, http://www.pgvision.ca under Flood Control you will see a proposal of mine to build a river wall with a bike path on top of it that would allow cyclists to negotiate the city from one end to the other without having to contend with traffic. |
| Prince George | City | Jordan | Gadsby | COUNCILLOR | Cycling is one of my favorite pastimes. I certainly support sport of cycling and consider it to be important for a number of environmental, health, and economic reasons. My family and I appreciate the cycling opportunities that exist in Prince George and know that the more safe and accessible we can make it, the better. As we discuss funding needs; however, we do need to realize that due to climate and geography, much of Prince George is not always accessible via bicycle. It is important to consider the costs of widening streets and paving lanes for cycling throughout the city as we consider the logistics and practicality of increased cycling lanes. I think that it is incredibly important that trails and lanes are connected better than they currently are in order to be more continuous and to give access to various parts of the city, while keeping in mind the safety of trail and lane users. Beyond these urban cycling initiatives, I support our other cycling groups as well and believe they add value to the lives of many in our community. |
| Prince George | City | Joanne | Dickenson | COUNCILLOR | Cycling for leisure, health or just a green way to get to work is a very important part of a cities infrastructure needs. Yes we need cycle roots and crossings to co exist with pedestrian crossings and good developed trails for the adventurous cyclist and trail walkers. We have some, we just need to grow our healthy alternative mode of travel and recreation. Joanne Dickenson Council Candidate City of Prince George BC |
| Qualicum Beach | Town | Rich | Mennie | COUNCILLOR | I am a casual, recreational cyclist as is my wife. I have been involved in sports at the High School level for 13 years. I support anything that encourages sports and/or exercise. I would be willing to hear more from your group around specific actions but do not feel I can make any commitment until more familiar with the details of level of support now and what your group would like. |
| Qualicum Beach | Town | Tom | Davies | COUNCILLOR | I ride a bicycle but can hardly be called a cyclist. I enjoy the health benefits that come from riding and I am proud to say that Qualicum Beach has developed an extensive trail system that cyclists of all experience levels enjoy. Our area also has a lot of cycling groups who are seen on our roads and trails on a constant basis.
I am an advocate for the cycling enhancements for commuting, fitness and a healthy environment, and the economic benefits. Oceanside is a great cycle area and this activity could be a greater boon for cycle tourism (revenue), for cycle touring, road biking and mountain biking. |
| Qualicum Beach | Town | Suzanne | Adkins | COUNCILLOR | I am unable to cycle myself, it is a beautiful sport and I am envious of those who are able to take to the trails around our lovely town. I endorse physical fitness and the environments that make it more accessible to all people. I think it would be interesting and beneficial to our town, to investigate the effects of cycling events on local tourism. |
| Radium Hot Springs | Village | Karen | Larsen | COUNCILLOR | I would say that any outdoor activity leisure or extreme has a place in every community. I personally loved cycling when i was younger, added to the list of other sports and activities I was associated with. This of course with many other associations needs to have a place and fit within the balance of the communities. Thanks for sending this information and link to your web sight, I will read more into your association |
| Radium Hot Springs | Village | Clara | Reinhardt | COUNCILLOR | We in Radium Hot Springs support all sports which allow people of all ages to enjoy our immense wealth of beautiful landscapes and geography. We have historically supported Local Cycling club applications for grants in aid and I support continuance of this practice if I am re-elected. |
| Revelstoke | City | Phil | Welock | COUNCILLOR | I’ve always imagined some sort of race from Mica Creek to Revelstoke (100 miles) Think about a road/off road race sort of like Raid the North |
| Revelstoke | City | Jason | Roe | COUNCILLOR | I am currently at a charity event for the Summer olympic games in London. I am a former Ironman and I am 100 percent behind all cycling. I would be happy to meet you at any time. |
| Revelstoke | City | Tony | Scarcella | COUNCILLOR | Watching my children grow I have always been supportive of sports, and involved in their organizations. As a grandparent now I continue to see the value of sports for youth, and later as recreation, health and competition in adulthood. I have noticed the growth of cycling in our community and would support it as I do other sporting and recreation events. Sporting events bring awareness to our beautiful community, supports local businesses, and promotes, healthy and active living. You certainly have my consent to share my above statement with your association. |
| Richmond | City | Richard | Lee | MAYOR | I have recently shared my views with another community group that several activities all worthy of municipal support should receive comparable support, including sports. I would be delighted to meet with you or your point person in Richmond, I am sure I will be enlightened and educated about the world of cycling in all its different facets. |
| Richmond | City | Jun | Wuyan | COUNCILLOR | I have some background in sports training. As a registered athlete, I am active in sports myself. I know how helpful cycling sports can bring health and joy to people. I absolutely will advocate the sport of cycling (road, mountain biking, BMX, & cyclo-cross) to receive more support in my community. If I am elected, you are welcomed to come to me for help! |
| Richmond | City | Peter | Mitchell | COUNCILLOR | I helped at the 2010 Steveston Sockeye Spin, and was a Director and organizer of the 2009 Richmond BC Senior games which included cycling. I’m on the City of Richmond’s Parking committee which has supported cycling inititives. My Steveston Rotary Club were part of the group that helped put together the BMX park in Steveston near #2 Rd a decade ago. As curent secretary of Richmond Sports Council I support all local sports. |
| Richmond | City | Michael | Wolfe | COUNCILLOR | I strongly support the growth of cycling in Richmond and will advocate for equitable share of support for all sports in Richmond.
I am an active cyclist and have advocated for city infrastructure for bicycles for the past 6 years, where I have attended most city council meeting to make presentations on sustainable communities, which include sustainable transportation options for all. As for the sport of cycling, I have been both a participant in bike races and spectator of my sister who races in triathlons. I am a VACC member and this week is bike to work week, and as a public school teacher with lots of resources and all-candidate meetings after work, I still commit to riding, rain or shine, across our city and back again in the dark. Last year I had a role with the Richmond School District, as the Sustainability Consultant, where I helped to write the District’s new Sustainable Transportation Policy Regulation. I also advocated for more bike lock areas in better locations and I hosted VACC bike basics and street-wise training courses for staff on Pro-D days. To be a politician, I feel you have to be clear and visible leader. I plan to bring a balance to council, to bring forth accountability and transparency. My vision for Richmond is one that provides a voice for all, through directly including citizens in the decision making process. The advocacy work for the sport of cycling is part of my role in that vision. I hope your question inspires a change of heart and mind of those who are trying to get re-elected in our community. |
| Richmond | City | De | Whalen | COUNCILLOR | I certainly support sport cycling in Richmond. I live in East Richmond and see cycling clubs practicing in my neigbourhood every weekend. Richmond is flat and therefore easy to navigate and generally welcoming to cyclists from all over Metro Vancouver. With the addition of the SkyTrain cycling bridge, Richmondites can cycle into Vancouver and Metro visitors can come into Richmond easily and safely. I have been advocating for better bike lanes in Richmond because I live east of Highway 99, where bike lanes appear then disappear on main roads. There is no cohesive system that connects bike lanes to the encircling dyke roads, so Richmond is not a particularly friendly place for people who wish to bike for transportation (to stores, work, etc). However it is safe enough for sport cycling if you are in a large group! As City Councillor I would advocate for cycling paths on city greenways and within linear parks that would connect current bike lanes with the dyke roads and lead into our service centers. In that way both sport cyclists and people using bikes for transportation would have more opportunities to use their bikes for the benefit of the environment and their own personal health and well being.
You can read an article I wrote in the local paper recently about cycling in Richmond. http://de4council.wordpress.com/2011/07/24/driving-shouldnt-be-only-option/ |
| Richmond | City | Cliff Lifeng | Wei | COUNCILLOR | I propose connect River Rd around Richmond as a big cycling track and encourage people to use it. |
| Richmond | City | Alexa | Loo | COUNCILLOR | As an Olympian, I am an advocate for sport and I will advocate for the sport of cycling (road, paracycling, BMX and cycle-cross (Richmond is flat and mountain biking just doesn’t happen here)).
I support bringing high level competitive events to Richmond and I would advocate to bring appropriate cycling events to Richmond. I also support the creation of cycle paths and the enforcement of traffic safety to increase the safety of cycling in Richmond. |
| Rossland | City | Sharon | Wieder | COUNCILLOR | I am always in support of activities that get people off the couch! I also believe bringing sporting events to our community is a benefit to participants and businesses. I would advocate to support the growth of cycling in our community. Please share my position with your members. |
| Saanich | District | Paul | Gerrard | COUNCILLOR | As a Saanich Councillor, Chair of the Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee, and general sports enthusiast, I am fully in support of increasing sports culture and activities within our municipality. Road, track and off-track cycling are already huge in the Greater Victoria area, and I would be willing to promote the growth of your sport, as long as there was a professional approach taken that you could provide to our staff when planning events. Too often a good idea withers on the vine because the planning process has not covered off all of the details…..dates, safety, insurance, marketing, budget, permits etc. |
| Saanich | District | Vic | Derman | COUNCILLOR | I am an active cyclist myself, mainly as a commuter but for recreation as well. I am certainly supportive of any attempts to broaden cycling as a health sport and recreation. I have supported efforts in the past to improve cycling infrastructure in the CRD (Sport, recreational and commuter) and will continue to do so. |
| Saanich | District | Vicki | Sanders | COUNCILLOR | I support cycling. One of the most enjoyable events I attended during the commonwealth games was the cycling at the velodrome in Colwood. I am not pleased at how that facility has been treated. |
| Saanich | District | Leif | Wergeland | COUNCILLOR | I would be pleased to continue to support the sport of cycling |
| Saanich | District | Harald | Wolf | COUNCILLOR | The sport of cycling meshes so beautifully with other forms of cycling, that any support of the sport brings benefits to commuting and recreational forms. I was an avid cyclist earlier in life, and look forward to becoming one again when my transportation needs allow it. I would do my best to support any initiatives to expand the sport in our Region. |
| Saanich | District | Judy | Brownoff | COUNCILLOR | I Chair Saanich’s Bicycling & Pedestrian Committee and I have done so for many years. We continue to add cycling infrastructure both on road and off road throughout Saanich. In 2010 we introduced the “Saanich Family Bike Ride” which closes major roads for all members of families to ride on a route, with police along side, and back to a celebration event at the UVIC. We had over 800 participants the first year.
I ride both to meetings and for recreation (and exercise) enjoyment. |
| Saanich | District | Nichola | Wade | COUNCILLOR | I too think cycling as a sport and as a great means of transport are critical to the future of a healthy Saanich |
| Salmon Arm | City | Tom | Sakamoto | COUNCILLOR | I am in support of any and all events that will assist in getting people especially our youth to be active. I personally know many avid cyclists and have been asked the same questions. I can not make any funding promises until I am elected and have a better understanding of the process it would take for the support you are asking for. Whether I am elected or not I wish you and your group all the best. |
| Salmon Arm | City | Ronald | Telfer | MAYOR | I do encourage your membership to continue your activities, I have memories of the Tour de Rock on Vancouver Island, the convoys of cyclists as I walked the dog in Oak Bay near the Marina. Salmon Arm has many hiking trails and also others for mountain biking. I will certainly support your group at council and in setting up the annual |
| Salmon Arm | City | Warren | Bell | COUNCILLOR | As a family physician, I am 100% in support of cycling as an activity! It’s good for physical and mental health and it’s also an efficient means of personal transport. While not everyone wants to cycle competitively – or can – competition can help stir some folks to get out and participate, and that is in itself valuable. As a non–motorized sport, cycling is easy on the environment. The key to increasing regular cycling is to create safe places to do it (i.e. completely separate cycling lanes in roadways), and for competitive cyclists, to set aside places to compete that are appropriate and satisfying for the sport. |
| Sechelt | District | Darren | Inkster | MAYOR | as mayor I have been pushing for more cycling lanes and have also lobbied hard for local highway improvements to make it safer for cyclists to use the highway, as well as requesting more highway shoulder sweeping. |
| Sechelt | District | Anita | Paulin | COUNCILLOR | Yes, I am in favor of cycling. |
| Sechelt | District | Chris | Moore | COUNCILLOR | I’m running for councillor in Sechelt.I have been a keen mountain biker for close to 20 years, here and Whistler…….. and a quasi-road rider for many years prior to that. I have been able to assist in a little trail building on the coast this past year. |
| Sechelt | District | John | Henderson | MAYOR | As you well know, the mountain biking trails on the Sunshine Coast are second to none in the province. They are an important resource – both for local users and to attract tourists to our wonderful paradise. I am very supportive of them being maintained and improved. I also will do whatever I can to encourage and promote biking events here on the Coast. Activities such as these are an important part of revitalizing our community and improving our community spirit! Finally, I am a fan of additional bike paths to enhance the safety and enjoyment for both bicyclists and automobile users. |
| Sechelt | District | Darnelda | Siegers | COUNCILLOR | I am running for Councillor for the District of Sechelt. Please feel free to post my comments below.I will advocate for more resources for those who love to cycle. For young to old, it is an activity they can all enjoy. I am in favour of encouraging more bike paths and trails to address the needs of all levels and types of biking here on the Sunshine Coast. |
| Sooke | District | Myke Colbert | Moonfist | COUNCILLOR | Biking is Great. October 9th this year, I Volunteered with the Sooke Slow Food Cycle www.sookeslowfoodcycle.com . I interact with members of several athletic groups, including the Sooke Bike Club and the Juan de Fuca Cycling Coalition. I want and am willing to help culture our Community back into walking and cycling more and more. Go Green Go! |
| Sooke | District | Shaunna | Salsman | COUNCILLOR | Biking is truly an activity everyone can enjoy at any age. Ensuring safety and making sure all levels of ability are being supported; Sooke can be a destination of choice for a wide range of cycling enthusiasts. |
| Sooke | District | Sheila | Beech | COUNCILLOR | I support the sport of cycling but do not ride now due to an injury. Sooke supports our Sooke Subaru Triathlon and I volunteer at the event, We have much excitement involving cycling, like a slow food cycling event held for the first time this year. |
| Squamish | District | Ron | Sander | COUNCILLOR | Cycling in Squamish is an integrated part of our Community lifestyle. From the BMX track, to recreational mountain biking, races such as the Test of Metal, and even destination events such as the Grand Fondo are key to healthy living, economic inputs and just general fun for families. Squamish has in the past supported various cycling groups and activities, and should continue to do so while looking for ways to improve the net value of the contributions. Opportunities such as proving matching funds for projects should be considered, letting the experts do the projects. |
| Squamish | District | Susan | Chapelle | COUNCILLOR | I am your new face for advocating cycling in Squamish. I have raced 2 wheel objects since I was 17, and will continue to do so and support Squamish (BC) cycling in all ways possible. |
| Squamish | District | Sarah | Braebrook | COUNCILLOR | I can safely say that cycling is an integral part of life in Squamish. It is time for us to review all of our sports and recreation funding. I am looking forward to that. There is no doubt that cycling will be at the top of the list for discussion. |
| Squamish | District | Rob | Weyes | COUNCILLOR | I have been an ongoing supporter of cycling over the years. I have sponsored mountain bike races, such as the Test of Metal, Gear Jammer, and the local Bmx track. I have always supported the trails systems and bike lanes. My family bikes often together, go to the bike park, and Bmx track. My 3 young sons 4,6,and 8 bike often. Cycling has been part of my life, since childhood. Squamish has a great trail system and cycling community. I fully support this sport and community, and will continue to so, regardless if I am elected. |
| Squamish | District | Debra | McBride | COUNCILLOR | If elected I intend to advocate the sport of cycling!
I do office work, sales and photograph inventory for a bicycle shop and have had a 2 wheeler since I was 4 and kept up w/the Boyz. The sport of cycling is non-polluting and cycling events highlight this! To ensure these events and the sport of cycling grows in popularity, long distance trails for commuters and racers must be developed further, in Squamish, BC. Though roads are narrow, bicycle lanes are a necessity. The 20th century catered to motorized vehicles with dire consequences. The 21st century must be “geared” to alternate energy and transportation. It is important in Squamish BC to co-ordinate events so as not to block travelers to other events as happened with the seriously eco-friendly Brackendale Farmers Market. |
| Squamish | District | Auli | Parviainen | MAYOR | As an avid mountain biker in a community like Squamish supporting cycling related activities is critically important for our future. I believe we must consider trails as recreational infrastructure and an investment must be made to increase the livability and attractiveness of our community. Cycling can bring significant economic benefits to our community in the form of events, service, manufacturing, tourism, business etc. Given our recreational lifestyle we can capitalize on cycling related activities to attract investment. We also need to invest in mountain bike skills park facilities and build some infrastructure around it. I think we have a real opportunity to become widely known as a biking destination with events like Gran Fondo and Test of metal already drawing lots of attention and bringing us a stream of visitors. |
| Squamish | District | Bryan | Raiser | COUNCILLOR | I actually host a mtb event (started as cycling bc event) BVOD and have been a cycling commuter in Squamish for almost 8 years now. |
| Squamish | District | Rob | Kirkham | MAYOR | The municipality has donated/leased land for the BMX track at our sports centre and provides support to the network of Mountain bike trails through our parks and recreaction depatrtment. The municipality also supports races like the Test of Metal and Grand Fondo. Squamish is proud to have recently completed paving a large section of our |
| Squamish-Lillooet | C | Susie | Gimse | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | Yes, I support Trails!
We just completed another section of the Sea to Sky trail – connecting communities from Squamish to D’Arcy. Funding support for the Pemberton Valley Trails Association –$65K last year to build the Mackenzie/ Owl connector and trail. We’re working on securing funding for the friendship trail – connecting Pemberton and Mount Currie. Continued support for local trails and active living. The Pemberton area is a favorite destination for many mountain bikers from across the Province and the annual Pemberton Slow Food Cycle attracts thousands of cyclists each year |
| Strathcona | D (Oyster Bay-Buttle Lake) | Brenda | Leigh | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | Yes, I support health & fitness and the reduced GHG emmissions that cycling provides. I am an avid cyclist myself and promote accessible trails and safe travel for cyclists. |
| Summerland | District | Orv | Robson | COUNCILLOR | My love for the outdoors, throughout my life has involved many sports, and activities, individually, as a family unit, or in a team concept have been a joy and inspiration to me. I must concede that I have not taken up the sport of cycling. I do however have many friends, as well my family who do cycle. Living in Summerland, we are constantly supporting the various triathlons’, the runs, swimming events, skateboarding , as well as the cycling tours, and other activities. These bring to our communities tourism and business, something that provides employment and promotes spectators. All which are a vital aspect of promoting our lovely community. I totally endorse any activity that supports healthy lifestyle, and cycling is certainly one of those, and you can be assured that I will champion any cause that fulfills that mandate. |
| Summerland | District | Donna | Wright | COUNCILLOR | My son is an avid biker and I fully support this type of activity. |
| Sunshine Coast | B | Roger | Lagassé | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | Yes, I intend to advocate the sport of cycling (road, mountain biking, BMX, & cyclo-cross) to receive comparable support to that offered to similar sized sports in our community. I also consent to Cycling BC will sharing my position on this issue via the Cycling BC website, on all your social media and through your E-newsletter which reaches 13,748 current and past participants in local cycling races. I am conducting most of my campaign on my mountain bike and I have had constituents declare that they would vote for me for this reason. Keep up the good work Cycling BC! |
| Sunshine Coast | D | Hans | Penner | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | Yes, if elected I intend to advocate for the sport of cycling (road, mountain biking, BMX, & cyclo-cross) and receive comparable support to that offered to similar sized sports in our community. Mountain biking is already well established on the Sunshine Coast. Most major roads on the Sunshine Coast however are a deterrent to cyclists and need significant improvements to safely accommodate other users beside cars. I will be a strong advocate for these improvements. |
| Sunshine Coast | D | Donna | Shugar | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | Over the course of the last 2 terms as Area D Director, I have utilized gas tax funds to develop new bike lanes in my community. I have championed the inclusion of a cycling advocate on the SCRD Transportation Advisory Cttee and the development of an Alternative Transportation Advisory Cttee. I have also championed the development of a set of high standards for bike lane construction in consultation with the Sunshine Coast cycling community.
On the recreation side, the mountain bike network on Mt Elphinstone in Roberts Creek is legendary and a very important aspect of our tourism industry. I have advocated the development of a Trails Strategy to help resolve conflicts amongst users of our back country trail system. I have also advocated for the development of a ferry to ferry bike lane and multiuse trail. This has been started with the first phase of the Suncoaster Trail in Pender Harbour. I will continue to champion the development of the next phase to come through the community of Roberts Creek and on through to Langdale. I have also been working to ensure that logging activity by BC Timber Sales and Island Timberlands who are both active on Mt Elphinstone does not negatively impact bike and walking trails. |
| Terrace | City | Michael | Ross | COUNCILLOR | The attraction to cycling as a greener, healthier and less expensive mode of transportation is rapidly growing. This attraction has enabled more and more people, young and old, to develop a greater appreciation of cycling – “the sport”. I definitely would not be called an “enthusiast” but I value the exercise benefits and I have seen the unmatched beauty of the Terrace Mountain and Copper Mountain trails.
Many have recently voiced concerns with regard to the few choices of activities our youth have available to them. I like to look for “win/win” situations and this one seems ideal. The sport (and the variations) provide an additional healthy choice of recreation and exercise while promoting the spirit of “fair play” and competition. All this with low impact on beauty and the environment and with very little relative cost. One would think that an elected official is derelict in his or her responsibility by ignoring the potential. I can see the present and growing value of this sport to a community and would , indeed, endorse and encourage support for it. |
| Terrace | City | Bruce | Martindale | MAYOR | I am extremely committed to Cycling. I am a bike shop owner and ride road, trail and street. I commute every day all year round and ride my bike for daily transportation including grocery shopping (with my trailer). I have organized over 15 bike races in the past 8 years, and raced in over 30. I was, before I was elected to City Council, the chair of the Terrace Off Road Cycling Association trail committee, and have been a strong supporter of TORCA from its inception. I am a trail builder and have participated in and organized trail days for TORCA through the years.
As a councilor I was co-chair of the Sustainability Task force and was instrumental in developing the Terrace Active Transportation plan. I also sat on the Kermodei Tourism Board, and worked to bring awareness to Cycling as an attraction to this region.I will continue to support and promote cycling and cycling issues as an elected official, and will continue to live the life and show my constituents how much fun it is. |
| Thompson-Nicola | “J” (Copper Desert Country) | Ron | McGivern | ELECTORAL AREA DIRECTOR | Thank you for the opportunity to respond to concerns over cycling as a sport. I am a candidate in the rural electoral area J of the Thompson Nicola Regional District. In our area there is not much in facilities for sports of any kind. However, we do have the Trans Canada Highway passing through. I can tell you that I am committed to having our provincial highways friendlier to cycling. There are ways to share the highways between motorized vehicles and cyclists. We just have to commit to the resources to do this. It does not strike me that such resources are large. I believe much of this issue could be dealt with through bicycle friendly road engineering and upkeep. |
| Tofino | District | Samantha | McBride | COUNCILLOR | I do agree that cycling and any recreation activity for that matter should receive equal support from the local municipality. Right now the current council is woring on a Mountain Bike Skills Park in the District of Tofino which I will continue to support if elected. |
| Tofino | District | Bernard | Kromka | COUNCILLOR | I haven’t owned a car in 10 years. but owned many bikes. That is my main transport and i have been an advocate for years. hope that answers it. |
| Trail | City | Robert | Cacchioni | COUNCILLOR | i was one of the councillors that supported the Raid the North event to the tune of 5000 dollars. also i support the trails net works at a cost of 80000 per year that are open to cyclists and hikers alike. regards, robert cacchioni candidate city of trail councillor and parks and recreation chair for the past 6 years. |
| Valemount | Village | Andru | McCracken | MAYOR | You need to know about a proposed bike park in Valemount. It is going to rip. It will be approximately 1 second outside of town on the sweetest mountain biking terrain known to man. I can speak for all the candidates in our area that we are going to push until it gets done, so this is not a divisive election issue. (Though truth be told, I am the rippeningest biker among the candidates.) Here’s the issue as far as bikes are concerned: the bureaucratic shenanigans required to make new trails are on par with developing a uranium mine. We’ve got to find a way to get the red tape out of the way so kids can get their kicks with pulaskis and crosscuts then ride a trail that THEY MADE. Many of the kids in Valemount have helped build trails, and they should be thought of as town fathers, not bandits. I’d love to work with Cycling BC to remove obstacles to further trail development. All levels of government should see recognize this as valuable infrastructure development and contribute to bike park planning and consult with the people who know the terrain the best. For Valemount, outdoor recreation is more important than paved roads. Our current trails will make you laugh and cry. Here is proof (from High school Mountain Bike Provincials 2009 ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-bRp9okZzk Valemount is a bike friendly town, so when you come by, tell people what you are doing here, and you will get a really warm welcome. Bring a helmet. You WILL need it. And for Heaven’s sake, DON’T go to Jasper to Mountain bike, they’ll just send you back here. |
| Vancouver | City | Rick | Orser | COUNCILLOR | I am very supportive of any kind of physical activity that improves – wellness – and as part of my TransLink Wellness-Hub Campaign believe that cycling also helps to reduce traffic congestion by encouraging people to ride bikes instead of traveling by car. |
| Vancouver | City | Raymond P | Louie | COUNCILLOR | The Mayor and many of the Vision Vancouver Candidates are avid recreational and commuter cyclists and are supporters of the different cycling disciplines. Vision has supported the West Side Classic, Tour de Gastown and supported the creation of the Yaletown Grand Prix. Vision Councillor Raymond Louie a former competitive road racer, was the Honourary Chair of the Tour de Gastown. He and his fellow Vision Councillors continue to advocate to bring back this historic race to Vancouver. The current Vision led City Council has given grant funds to cycling events a part of our sport hosting program and this will continue. The Vision Vancouver led Vancouver Park Board approved and opened the first BMX track for beginner intermediate and experts in Vanier Park. |
| Vancouver | Park Board | Jamie Lee | Hamilton | COMMISSIONER | Yes I’m in support of cyclists and walkers. It is vitally important that the roadways are shared in such a manner which keep our cyclists safe. I don’t cycle but use transit or walk. There should be more cyclist friendly facilities including public showers for those who cycle to work and improved security for bikes. |
| Vancouver | Park Board | Jason | Upton | COMMISSIONER | I think cycling is a great recreation and I have already pledged to introduce bicycle rental facilities available in parks such as Musqueam, Spanish Banks and Riverside. This will make it easier for tourists and those from other parts of the Lower Mainland to be able to go for a ride in some of our great natural places. Thanks for your hard work! |
| Vanderhoof | District | Kevin | Moutray | COUNCILLOR | I will support cycling in our area. We are lucky to have a dedicated club who have built a great bike park and I would make sure the district continues to support them. One of the easiest things we can do for cyclists of all levels is to install bike racks around our town so cycling is a viable means of transportation. I lobbied for thi during my time with the Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce but the only one installed was outside my business. |
| Victoria | City | Robin | Kimpton | COUNCILLOR | I grew up on sports and have continued to be active in sport as an adult. i would support all properly structured sporting events. |
| Victoria | City | Linda | McGrew | COUNCILLOR | I am an active cycle commuter, cycle tourist, and advocate for cycling. I have cycle commuted for 12 years now and cycle toured over 13 countries. I am a writer for Canadian cycling magazine as well as some cycling magazines overseas. I am running for city council in Victoria. |
| Victoria | City | Charlayne | Thornton-Joe | COUNCILLOR | The City has shown its commitment to all sports, and have done its best to accommodate and encourage more activity. Where cycling is concerned we have been the host City for many cycling events and to encourage riders of all ages, recently opened a bike skills park at Cecelia Ravine in the neighbourhood of Burnside Gorge. Whether the sport of cycling should receive comparable support to that offered to similar sized sports in our community, is something that I would consider but would need to know more. For example, I have a nephew that used to do lots of mountain biking and BMX, and spent lots of time at Hartland. Unfortunately, the City does not have space that could accommodate a track such as this. I continue to believe participation in all types of sports is important for individuals of all ages |
| View Royal | Town | Ron | Mattson | COUNCILLOR | I am a bike rider — I commute to work daily by bike. I am not aware of level of involvement of sport cycling in View Royal but I am in favour of improving opportunities for the expansion and enhancement of activities for youth and adults — including sport cycling. If elected, I would gladly work with Cycling BC to look for opportunites to expand this sport in View Royal. |
| View Royal | Town | John | Rogers | COUNCILLOR | I attended the View Royal all candidates meeting and prior to the meeting submitted the following question “The Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre has opened up the Velodrome for use after several years of closure. What is your opinion on the need for a Velodrome in this area.”. The video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycBUGu5u1zw (starting at time 36’40″) has the answer from three of the candidates running for View Royal Council in order of John Rogers, Heidi Rast and Ron Mattson. Both John and Heidi are currently on the board that voted to reopen the velodrome. |

| View Royal | Town | Andrew | Britton | MAYOR | To start off my primary means of transportation is my bike. I cycle to work and other places. I have been on council for the past six years in that time I have participated in Bike to Work Week as well as had the town become a sponsor. In every road improvement project in View Royal I have advocated for bike lanes and side walks. When a developer brings a proposal before council I ensure there is ample bike storage and with business proposals I request they provide amenities for their workers to bike to work. We need to continue to improve our cycling infrastructure not only in View Royal but throughout the region. I fully support cycling in BC. |
| West Kelowna | District | Randall | Robinson | COUNCILLOR | I feel it’s critical that community leaders have regular communication with groups like yours so that we can better understand the needs and desires of your members and of the sport. I’m not an expert in the sport of cycling so rely on your experience and insight to help guide good decisions.
It’s pretty easy for any candidate to say they support the sport of cycling, and I suspect many will do just that. In fact I do support this sport. I support all sports that promote health, happiness and community betterment and advocate a balanced approach to supporting them equally. All great buzz words still so let me explain further. One of the reasons I’m running for council in West Kelowna is because we need to have a much greater focus put on the development of ammenities that serve a wider range of people in the community. This balance is a critical part of a strong and vibrant community and sorely lacking in West Kelowna. Bike parks, pathways and other ammenities that help facilitate the growth in participation, along with the pursuit of excellence in the sport, will help make West Kelowna a more attractive place to live, work and play for everyone. Cycling in particular is a very accessible sport. It promotes healthy lifestyle which means that particpation by kids, teens and young adults becomes a key part of protecting youth at risk. The benefits go on and on, but I suspect you already know all this. There are far too many empty parks and far too few that are well utilized by groups like Cycle BC. I encourage you to continue communication so as to help me better understand what’s truly important and helpful for your sport and your members. |
| West Kelowna | District | Rosalind | Neis | MAYOR | While certainly not an expert on cycling or racing in any aspect of this sport, I strongly endorse these activities and would be proud to offer any assistance as a community leader to bring these sporting events to our community. I am aware of the growing interest in cycling, both recreationally and racing/competitive cycling as many friends and acquaintances enjoy these activities locally and internationally.
The Grande Fondo (if I have the correct title) that was recently held in the Okanagan is one example, and while there were a few last minute changes in the routing, it is my understanding that it was a success and I would like to see more of these events in this area as I believe we have the best climate and scenery to host something of this scale. For local mountain biking we also have Crystal Mountain (privately owned) that could be another wonderful local venue for this although I am not personally aware if the owners have been approached to look at the possibility of making a business case for summer use at this local resort. Bottom line – I would be happy to assist in any way possible to bring this and other sporting events to West Kelowna and the Okanagan area. |
| West Kelowna | District | Cathy | Sinclair | COUNCILLOR | I talked about cycling passionately at a candiates meeting and how I would like to see West Kelowna become World renowned for a well developed Mountain Biking and race way here. I would actually support and encourage the development of Mountain bike trails From Rose Valley to Glenrosa and beyond, as well as a yearly road race for charity (my choice would be Children’s Hospital of BC). We have such an amazing Topography here in West Kelowna, it would be an amazing opportunity to be a part of such a venture. I am the mother of three very active children and to keep them outdoors and exploring on their bikes through the mountains and hills around our area would be great. I think all biking brings a community together and helps build life long friendships from birth to 100. |
| West Kelowna | District | Doug | Findlater | MAYOR | We are a newly incorporated large municipality which has inherited rural roads and transportation infrastructure. We do have an avid cycling community. The District is in the process of completing our first Transportation Master Plan which proactively includes cycling infrastructure and bike paths as we go about the task of upgrading our roads, cycling, and pedestrian ways. I am an advocate for including cycling as an important transportation and recreational component of the District’s overall initiatives.
You will find reference to cycling in my Safety, Health and Well Being Plank of my Platform at my webpage www.findlater.com . |
| West Vancouver | District | Vivian | Vaughan | COUNCILLOR | Thank you for drawing this important subject to my attention. I was a Councillor from 2005 to 2008, and the main requests came from the mountain biking fraternity at that time to improve their access. I also supported improvements for cyclists along Marine Drive. I have to answer your question consistently with what I tell other sports groups. Sports are encouraged, and facilitated to the extent possible and affordable to the taxpayer. In the current difficult financial situation for our municipality, I advocate helping sports groups to help themselves through creative fundraising initiatives. In terms of assigning physical space and access, I support a commitment to measurable incremental improvements every year. |
| West Vancouver | District | Max | Nikpay | COUNCILLOR | I have to state that I am an avid supporter and advocate of cycling. I believe the municipality of West Vancouver can facilitate many road conditions in our city for cyclers to use as hobby or specifically use as an alternative means of transportation. In addition, the municipal personnel should utilize this important activity in different departments such as police, as an easier and financially more viable method of security control. Furthermore, in Lynn Headwaters Regional Park, I have personally observed few young cyclers who were practicing and educating younger students in mountain biking, we have possibly an unlimited trail system in the British Properties, and I believe a successful trail system involves collaboration between land owners, volunteer groups, and municipality. As I was president of The British Properties Homeowners Association for several years I can promise you that I do whatever I can to create a adroit collaboration between our city and the British Pacific Properties to create a successful partnership to allow mountain bikers utilizing our home amenities rather than travel to other cities. |
| West Vancouver | District | Nora | Gambioli | COUNCILLOR | I am a cycling advocate and rider, as are all my family members. |
| West Vancouver | District | Craig | Cameron | COUNCILLOR | I am a cyclist and will support all forms of cycling in the community. I am running for west Vancouver council |
| Whistler | Resort Municipality | Corrine | Allison | COUNCILLOR | I am a candidate running for Whistler Council. My son is hard core mountain bike competitor, Tyler Allison, and my husband is Bob Allison so I bet you know what an advocate I am for mountain biking (and all forms of biking) and my belief that cycliing is a life-long sport! WORCA had presented the question below to all candidates and I have enclosed my answers. “Mountain biking is one of the leading summer economic drivers for Whistler and the Sea To Sky Corridor. As a member of council or as mayor how do you plan to promote and support the sport of mountain biking in Whistler during the upcoming three years?” As a leading economic driver, mountain biking is important to Whistler in all aspects: As a member of council, I would work hard to promote and support mountain biking in Whistler over the next three years. |
| Whistler | Resort Municipality | Brent David | McIvor | MAYOR | Our whole family is very involved in cycling. Skiing/boarding are our winter sports and cycling our main summer sport. Both are great family and lifetime sports. I mostly ride cross country mountain bikes. Ride pretty much every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with group from village to Olympic station at 6:00 a.m. or first light. Also ride most Worca Toonie Races on Thursday. Also riding Van. – Seattle Cancer ride June 2012 I support the Sea to Sky Trail and all trail building efforts. If elected I intend to advocate for the sport of cycling (road, mountain biking, BMX, & cyclo-cross) to receive comparable support to that offered to similar sized sports in my community. |
| Williams Lake | City | Surinderpal | Rathor | COUNCILLOR | I have Always suppoted Cycling in Williams Lake. You can varify this from Local Cycling people/Club. You can Count on my 100% support for Cycling |
| Williams Lake | City | Walter | Cobb | MAYOR | I would certainly support and work with your group to help promote and expand cycling in our City. I am told we have some world class mountain biking trails, thanks to our two local bike shops, Red Shreds and Barking Spider. |
| Williams Lake | City | Scott | Nelson | MAYOR | Williams Lake rocks its got the best bike trails in bc there wild wild and wild lots fun ,,, its great to see so many young kids getting into sports williamslake is big supporters cheers |
| Williams Lake | City | Richard | Vollo | COUNCILLOR | You can certainly count me in as a supporter of cycling activities and the promotion thereof. Williams Lake has an extensive network of mountain bike trails that enjoy provincial and national recognition. If elected I would promote cycling as part of a revised economic strategy for the City |
| Williams Lake | City | Danica | Hughes | COUNCILLOR | I am a candidate for city councillor in Williams Lake, BC. Yes, I support cycling. I have loved bike riding since I was five years old. I have used the trails around Williams Lake and area. Cycling is a healthy sport that can be a family activity. It is an important healthy choice for people and the environment and it would be great to see further bike path development in Williams Lake. |
| Williams Lake | City | Mike | Bouchard | COUNCILLOR | I’ll just quickly say a “resounding YES” to supporting cycling of any kind! In Williams Lake the city just recently completed a bike park in town! Thanks to the hard work and dedication of numerous people in this community Williams Lake can boast of some of the very best and extensive Mlountain bike trails in BC. This has to be one of the most rapid growing sports in BC today and I look forward to working with our community to make us a premier destination for bikng enthusiasts in the country! |
