1. What is a license?
A license is the identity document used to verify that you are a member of a Cycling Federation affiliated with the UCI (the International Cycling Union). Assuming that you are a member in good standing and are not suspended, it gives you the right to participate in bicycle races in the categories and disciplines listed on the license. Possession of a license also proves that you carry liability insurance in case you cause property damage or injuries to others while racing.
2. What types of licenses are available?
Cycling BC offers several types of membership licenses. They are as follows:
- UCI International License This license allows you to compete anywhere in Canada or the World, in the race category for each cycling discipline listed on your license.
- Citizen License This license allows you to compete in the citizen category at any race in BC, in the cycling disciplines listed on your license card. You are also able to use this license to enter club-level races.
- Club Membership / Associate Membership It is possible for someone to join a club affiliated with Cycling BC without directly joining Cycling BC itself. Such people are not licensed. They are only insured for and able to participate in rides and/or club level races held by the club that they have joined. If they wish to race at any other event, they must purchase first purchase one of the license types described above.
- Single Event License This license is intended for people who aren’t members of Cycling BC who do not have a UCI International license or Citizen license. It is sold during onsite race registration or package pick-up. This license is valid only for the event for which it was purchased for.
3. Why do I need a license?
You need a license for the following reasons:
- To prove your identity and racing categories;
- To prove that you are covered by Cycling BC’s insurance policy;
- To prove that you have agreed to the participant declaration, where you acknowledge that you will follow the regulations of the sport, and will accept both disciplinary and anti-doping procedures, if necessary.
It is not possible to participate in any bicycle race without a valid license. The type of membership license type depends on the level of which you’d like to participate in the sport. I.e Club level, Provincial Level, National & International Levels.
4. How can I purchase a license?
You can apply for a license on-line, via Cycling BC’s online registration system managed by Cycle Component Network (CCN): https://reg.ccnbikes.com/lk3/licenses/select-licensee/cbc. Some types of licenses, such as single event licenses can be purchased at the time that you register for a race.
5. I’m having a technical problem with Cycling BC’s on-line registration system. What should I do?
Cycle Component Network is Cycling BC’s on-line registration service provider. They have designed and programmed the registration system that we now use. 6. What should I do with my license when I receive it?
After you receive your membership license card, do the following:
- Review the information on the card to make sure it is correct; if there is an error, contact the Cycling BC office as soon as possible (e-mail: info(at)cyclingbc.net , phone: 604-737-3034)
- Sign the back of the card in the space provided;
- Make a photocopy of both sides of the card, and keep the copy with your racing clothing in case you forget to bring the original;
- Bring the original to rider check-in at every race.
7. What happens if I don’t bring my license with me to a race?
You must present your license at rider check-in at every race, whether you have pre-registered on-line or not. This is important to verify your identity and your presence at the race. If you do not have your membership license card with you, it may be possible to identify you with your driver’s license against a membership list for races in BC only. However, not all races will have a Cycling BC membership list available; consequently it is possible that if you don’t have your license with you, you may be denied entry to the race.
8. I’ve lost my license. What do I do?
Contact the Cycling BC office as soon as possible vie email info(at)cyclingbc.net or call 604-737-3034). A replacement card can be issued; the lost license replacement fee is $10.
9. What can I do with a UCI License?
With a UCI license, you can enter races in the disciplines and categories listed on your license anywhere in the world. For races held within BC, the UCI license allows you to advance through the different ability categories for the disciplines in which you race, once you demonstrate the skill and fitness necessary to do so (see the section on categories and upgrades for more information). Also, for races that use age categories instead of ability categories, the UCI license is the only license that allows you to race in your age category.
10. What can I do with a Citizen License?
With a citizen license, you can enter Provincial and Regional level races in the citizen category for any of the disciplines listed on your license. The citizen license is only valid within BC. For club level races, you can enter whatever category you like, with the permission of the club organizing the race. However, a citizen license has some limitations. With a citizen license, you can’t enter your age category in races that are run with age categories. Also, you do not have the possibility to advance to more difficult ability categories as your skill level and fitness level rises. In order to do this, you must instead have UCI International License.
11. What can I do with a club/affiliate membership?
You can participate in rides and club level races held by the club that you have joined. If you wish to participate in Provincial or Regional level races, or races or rides held by other clubs then you must also have either a Citizen License or UCI International License.
12. Can I belong to more than one club or team?
Yes. However, only the club or team with which you are primarily affiliated will be listed on your license card. Club or team of primary affiliation is determined by the type of license you buy. For example, if you purchased a road license with mountain bike as an add on, and are a member of both a road club and a mountain bike club, then we would consider road to be your primary discipline; the road team would be the team or club listed on your license.
13. How long does it take to process license application or change to my license (e.g. category upgrade)?
Most of the year, license applications and change requests can be processed within 5 to 10 business days; however, some times of year are busier than others. In the period between January and early May, processing times may be as much as 3 weeks. Please plan accordingly. There is no guarantee that last minute requests can be processed.
Also, the processing times stated above assume that you have provided all required information, including:
- Signed waiver and declaration (including the parent / guardian signature for applicants under 18);
- Provided all personal and address information;
- For UCI and Citizen license applications, have submitted a photograph for your license card (only necessary for new licenses, not for renewals).
14. When does my license expire?
All licenses are good from January 1st to December 31st of the purchase year. We do not offer prorated licenses based on time of purchase.
