Coquitlam, B.C.’s Jasmin Glaesser’s 7th place in the women’s omnium was the highlight of Canadian efforts at the first UCI track World Cup event this weekend in Astana, Kazakhstan. Glaesser, who was part of the women’s team pursuit gold (and new national record) at the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico last month, was fourth in the points race and first in the scratch race to take seventh overall. The omnium, essentially a track cycling hexathlon, will be one of the events at the London Olympics.
Glaesser and teammates Gillian Carleton and Julia Bradley were 12th in women’s team pursuit qualifying. On the men’s side of things, Joseph Veloce, Travis Smith and Hugo Barrette finished 15th in men’s team sprint qualifying. Veloce, sporting one of Canada’s great bike racing names, and Monique Sullivan both made it into the first round repechage of the Keirin, the curious Japanese race that begins with a motorized “derney” pacing the riders. Sullivan was 22nd in women’s sprint qualifying, while Veloce and Smith achieved 33rd and 40th respectively in the men’s sprint qualifying.
