iRide Begins Field Trips to Abbotsford BMX & Burnaby Velodrome

With spring just on the horizon, Cycling BC’s iRide indoor programs started a new field trip this week.  Last Friday’s BMX field trip for distance-education students of the Summit Learning Center in Mission, BC featured as the big surprise for their final day of the winter quarter. Provincial BMX coach, Adam Muys, showed the 28 student class the ropes with various drills and exercises. Students first started off the bikes, learning how to absorb the pump section as seen in the photographs. Scott Robart joined Adam’s session to bring us these beautiful images. This week, 2 more schools will visit the Agrifair building in Abbotsford and get a chance to pump the jumps and crank the banks.

Cowichan valley students of Maple Bay Elementary also started their 2nd week of iRide with coach Glenowyn Carlson. Glenowyn writes:

This is the second visit for me to Maple Bay Elementary School in the Cowichan Valley. Over 100 kids from grades 4 to 7 are participating in the program. Their levels of experience on the bike range from just getting off training wheels to road riding with parents or riding mountain bike trails or BMX Parks. Maple Bay Elementary School is at the base of Mt Tzouhalem which is a well known for its mountain bike trails. The Cowichan Valley has 2 other main mountain bike areas: Mt Prevost and Maple Mountain. The kids have been eager to tell me why they love riding mountain bike trails. They also have someone to look up to–the host teachers ‘s son races for Devinci Global Race Team. The first on the bike session it was great to see the kids master their traffic hand signals while riding their bikes. It was also great to see over 100 bikes brought to school and locked up around the basketball court.

The penulitmate TaG Cycling indoor session took place last week with iRide graduate Bronwen Campbell joining the coaching team of Lesley Tomlinson, Micayla Gatto and Krista Ruby. This was the first trip for a West Vancouver school and Micayla took full advantage of the weather for her outdoor agility portion. Inside on the bikes, Krista and Bronwen awarded three jerseys to the enthusiast riders of West Bay Elementary.

Join us next week as we showcase various Burnaby area schools experimenting at the Burnaby Velodrome as well as the start of outdoor programming with Cypress Park in West Vancouver.
