iRide @ Whistler Gran Fondo

This week Cycling BC’s iRide program teamed up with the RBC Whistler GranFondo to provide a FREE community event for 75 students in Whistler, BC.  As part of the annual Family Fundo event, iRide stepped in as the program facilitator, gaining opportunities to engage with the Whistler and GranFondo community abroad.

All of iRide’s lower mainland head coaches joined the event supported by a strong group of local volunteers. Students were placed in teams of 10-15 students based on age and ability and enjoyed one hour of coaching near the Whistler Village.  The Whistler Art’s Council was also on-hand to entertain students prior to the event, providing colors tools as riders decorated their personal number plates.

As a special treat for this Family Fundo event, iRide created a strider bicycle course for the youngest of riders. Four key stunts were build, including a small start ramp and a tall pyramid ramp to finish. Old students, aged 6+ enjoyed skills and games in Lot 4 and the nearby Mountain Bike beginner skills park whereas the most advanced students played in the Lost Lake trail network and showed our iRide coaches their supreme dirt jumping skills.

The event finished with a special trip for 25 of the 75 students to the main stage at the Whistler Olympic Plaza. Once on stage, Royal Bank of Canada and the Whistler GranFondo presented a $48,000 check in support of future programs in the Sea 2 Sky corridor in 2016.  iRide is currently taking bookings for these events and can be reached for questions through iRide’s coordinator, Ben Chaddock.
