BC Youth Road Championships 2016

Over 120 youth from around the province came out for the Hayman Classic BC Youth Road Championships in Penticton this weekend. Riders rode through the full gamut of weather conditions, persevering through a cold, wet time trial on Friday, a criterium beseiged by thunderstorms on Saturday, and sun-drenched road race on Sunday.

Riders took part in an info session on Saturday afternoon, where Senior Director of Sport Development Richard Wooles and Cannondale pb Fortius coach Tim Sherstobitoff taught the basics of anti-doping in sport, and later covered sponsorship.

Two-time national road race champion, nine-time national time trial champion, 2006-2007 UCI America Tour champion, and current UCI ProTeam Orica-GreenEDGE rider Svein Tuft joined the banquet and podium ceremony on Saturday evening. Tuft addressed the crowd with some advice and words of encouragement for BC’s young racers, and awarded delighted riders their medals and championship jerseys. Tuft stayed following the banquet to talk and take photos with riders doubtlessly also dreaming of making the journey from provincial to world championships and beyond.
