Cycling BC Executive Director Jim Richards Resigns

The past year has been an excellent one for our organization. We set specific goals around financial stability, growth in membership, and enhanced sport development. We ended the year with revenue higher than targeted and expenses lower than budgeted without any significant changes to programming. Growth in membership was moderate and engagement was higher than in previous years with the AGM and Awards Ceremonies well attended, and stakeholder’s sessions and specific sport meetings were held through the year to help us better understand the membership’s wishes. Our project calendar was full with races, series and provincial championships for all disciplines (including youth road), officials had a development pathway for the first time in several years, more coaches were trained, and our relationships with the clubs and teams across the province is continuing to improve. The year was also a banner one for Cycling BC athletes, 50% of all 2016 national champions and 30% of all athletes on 2016 national podiums are from BC.

Despite the excellent results of 2016, I have tendered my resignation with the Board of Directors.

Like most changes in life, this is not due to any one thing, but a combination of what I’ve learned this past year about myself and Cycling BC. I’m proud of the accomplishments the front office team has been able to achieve this year, and I’d like to believe I’ve been able to help them articulate their objectives and empowered them to achieve their goals. However, I think more could be done from the desk of the Executive Director to facilitate targeted growth in the sport. I’m convinced it’s in the best interest of both Cycling BC and myself for me to step down and for the organization to locate a business leader who is both passionate and knowledgeable about the competitive sport of cycling.

The board of directors is now in the process of actively recruiting candidates to take on the role of Executive Director in the new year. Cover letter and resume should be submitted to membership@cyclingbc.net.

In the interim, Erin Waugh will be taking on the role of Acting Executive Director. Erin has emerged as a leader among the team this past year as Finance and Admin Manager, and has worked closely with me and each of our colleagues on Cycling BC’s plans for the coming year. I am confident that together Erin and Richard Wooles, Senior Director of Sport Development, will ensure a smooth transition and the continued success of Cycling BC’s programs and activities.
