We are disappointed to announce that the organizers of the Sun Peaks Canada Cup have decided to cancel the Cross-Country (XCO) portion of their event. The updated Canada Cup Calendar can be found here: http://cyclingcanada.ca/sport/mountain-bike/events/type-of-event/canada-cup

Statement from Sun Peaks Resort:

After careful consideration Sun Peaks Resort and Race organizers have decided not to go ahead with the Canada Cup XCO. After many years of hosting these races throughout 1999- today there has seen a serious decline in registration of XCO style racing in western Canada, in favor of more marathon style races, so regrettably we will not be able to continue with the 2013 Canada Cup XC.

Cycling CANADA and Cycling BC will continue to work together to build and strength XCO racing opportunities in Western Canada. We will continue to support the DH Canada Cup at Sun Peaks and work with the organizer to help build their event.

Please note that Sun Peaks is still holding the DH Canada Cup race along with the DH BC Cup.

From Ridge Meadows BMX Club Coach – Mischa Partridge

The 2013 season has definitely kicked off with a bang! I have been given the opportunity to work with the Ridge Meadows BMX club for another year as Club Coach, and I have picked up right where I left off in the fall. The amount of new, young riders has been increasing on what seems to be a daily basis, and the Ridge Meadows BMX track has once again become a bustling, vibrant, and exciting atmosphere!

We saw great numbers at our first session of the year, and followed it up with a great night of coaching for the advanced riders last week. Being able to work with the same group of riders all year allows me to build each week off of what they have learned in the previous session, and really progress these riders as they grow, and improve though out the season. It was also refreshing to see some of the older, and more experienced riders come out last week for the advanced session! The smaller group size allows me to cater to the needs of these riders, and challenge them one on one. I think it is especially important to keep the older riders of the club engaged, and to push them. They are the riders who will inspire all of the new, young members to strive for improvement.

It has been a great start to the season so far, and as the weather continues to improve, so too will the racing!

Mischa P.

About the Legacy Performance Games

The Legacy Performance Games were created from legacy funds generated by the hosting of the Kamloops 2011 Western Canada Summer Games in August, 2011. The Kamloops Sports Council was contracted to plan, organize, create and deliver the Legacy Performance Games.About Kamloops Legacy Performance Games

The Legacy Games are not intended to replace existing multi-sport Games opportunities but to offer a Games experience to athletes that may miss out on participating in “elite” Games. For example, not all summer sports are included in a Western Canada or Canada Summer Games. Another example is because of the year they were born, some athletes are not in the “stream” of the Games (IE: if Canada Summer Games focus on U15 boys for Baseball in 2013 and again in 2017, those born in 2000 / 2001 and 2004 / 2005 are not eligible). After discussions with various Provincial Sport Organizations (PSO’s), it has been confirmed there is a need for an event that catches sports not included or missed age at a higher level of competition.

Vision

The Legacy Performance Games is dedicated to the development of excellence in sport.

Goals & Objectives

To provide athletes with an athletic competition that supports Canadian Sport for Life and the PSO’s long-term athlete development models.

To provide athletes with an opportunity to experience and prepare for future national /international multi-sport competitions.

To encourage and motivate participation in major sport events on an inter-provincial, provincial, territorial, regional and community basis.

To profile the best age-class athletes in an event that supports ethical practices in sport including fair play in a drug free environment, free of harassment and abuse.

To promote a high standard of coaching and officiating.

To demonstrate the strong volunteer commitment to amateur sport by Kamloops residents.

To promote the value of sport and demonstrate its importance in Canadian culture.

To encourage government, the private sector and the volunteer community to cooperate in the organization and funding of the Legacy Performance Games.

To provide a human and physical legacy.

As riders signed up Saturday morning, the ominous clouds near the horizon looked like they might keep their distance, and preserve some sunny skies for the race.

But at the gun there was hail, then soaking rain, and all in single-digit temperatures.

It was a race of massive attrition, estimated at 75% in all categories, mostly due to cold weather, though an early B-group crash also removed a few riders.

The A/B race was run as an Australian Pursuit, so that both groups (the A’s numbered about 15, the B’s nearly 30) would get a better race. The 8-minute handicap over a planned 108 km race was not nearly enough. The A group carved two minutes off in the first 10 km, and steadily removed time for the rest of the race. Even after all the races were cut short by one lap, the diminished A group caught the badly depleted B group with laps to spare.

H&R Block was the dominant force driving the A group all day, and as the last laps came around, they had four riders in a lead A/B pack of less than ten. As they came to the line, though, the lead bunch, now shredded to a mere 5, was led by the independent American, David Kessler, who evaded the tax men on the final climb to win the day. Ryan MacDonald and Garret McLeod took second and third.

Craig Holden (Atomic) was the lone B to cling to the lead bunch, and he got the class win for his trouble. Michael Wegner (C4) rolled home not far behind to take second, and Mighty Riders’ Andrew Latreille was a distant but persistent third.

The C race simply fell apart lap after lap, as hypothermic riders pulled off. The hardy winner was Richard Costello, followed by Atomic’s Ben Ford, and Geoff Watts in third.

Barb Morris, a stalwart of the local racing scene, won the C Women. Though dropped from the C pack early, she stayed out, managed her effort, and finished solo, the lone woman to survive the distance, It was a gritty effort, but she was smiling every time she passed the lap board.

In the Youth division, dEVo’s own Quinn Storey took the victory.

Escape Velocity would like to thank the many sponsors that make this racing possible: Catalyst Kinetics, TRG Group Benefits, Sugoi, Cannondale, Bicycle Sports Pacific, Roberts Composites, and Continental Repairs. We’d also like to welcome RBC GranFondo Whistler, who generously gave us some GFW race entries as draw prizes. Look for more GFW entries to be up for grabs at the next Sportif race, on May 11.

Note that the May 11 race, scheduled for Thunderbird Short, will have a start time 1 hour earlier than usual (9:30 race start). For complete details on this race, full results, and the schedule for the rest of the Sportif Series, see our web page:
