SUMMARY:Test of Metal
DESCRIPTION:The Nesters Market Squamish Test of Metal cross-country mountain bike race is many things to many people. On paper it’s a 67-kilometre course with over 1\,200 meters of climbing and 35 kilometers of single-track. Off paper it’s an unforgettable day for everyone involved from the organizers and volunteers\, to the thousands of spectators and of course the riders. For those in the saddle it is in every way a test of mettle. The unrelenting course will take the fastest about 2 1/2 hours\, the average competitor about 4 hours and the humans 5-6 hours. \nBut Test of Metal is more than a single event; it’s a festival with activities for everyone who’s looking for mountain bike-related fun. \nMore than 800 riders will participate in one of the most successful mountain bike events in Canada with the running of the 20th annual Nesters Market Test of Metal cross country mountain bike race. While waiting for racers to complete the course\, spectators at the finish area at the Loggers Sports Grounds can take in the CrossFit Squamish Strength in Stone competition\, along with the many vendors\, food and beer garden. \nThe Mini Metal\, on Sunday morning starting at the Squamish Adventure Centre\, will give young riders a chance to race along the Loggers Creek trail system to Brennan Park\, finishing at the SORCA Bike Skills Park. Pre-registration will be at Corsa Cycles in Squamish from June 1 to June 14. The race is designed for kids on run bikes up to 24-inch wheel bikes. \nOn Sunday afternoon\, it’s the downhillers’ turn with the Rockstar Invitational down some of the gnarliest mountain bike terrain in Squamish.

SUMMARY:2015 Sidney Velo Tuesday Night Time Trial Series
DESCRIPTION:We hold a 17.4-km time trial every Tuesday evening from May through August\, rain or shine – the riders decide whether it’s too wet to race. Open to all age categories of cyclists and paracyclists. \nLocation: Start/finish at Cy Hampson Park in North Saanich near Sidney\, B.C. on Lochside Avenue between Mount Newton Cross Road and the McTavish Road Interchange \nTime: Sign-on start time: 6:30 pm. Racing start time: 7:00 pm. \nA minimum of 3 rides per season are required to win a category.\nInsurance: Every rider MUST show proof of insurance – a Cycling BC Race License (UCI/CCA Licence or Provincial Licence)\, or Associate Membership with primary affiliation to Sidney Velo. If you don’t have one of these\, you must buy one at cyclingbc.net and bring it to the time trial. We no longer sell associate memberships or licences at the time trial. Riders without proof of insurance cannot ride the time trial. \nCost: $5 per time trial or $50 for the season. Free for under age 19. \nClick on this link to see a map of the time trial course: \nwww.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6226348 \nRules\nHolding this time trial on public roads is a privilege. We must obtain approval each year from Central Saanich \, North Saanich \, the RCMP and the Ministry of Transportation. We must abide by their rules or the privilege can be revoked at any time. \nRiders must abide by the rules below or they will be barred from participating in the time trial: \n\nProvide proof of insurance ( Cycling BC membership or race license).\nWear an approved cycling helmet.\nRecumbent bicycles and tricycles must have an elevated flag for increased visibility.\nObey the rules of the road\, including:\n\nDo not cross the centreline of the road.\nStay to the right of the roadway in the bicycle lane or on the paved shoulder as much as possible\, except to pass cyclists\, debris\, parked vehicles\, or other obstructions. Unnecessary riding outside of the bicycle/shoulder lane is not allowed.\nStay in the bicycle lane to the right of the cones at the Lochside Drive and Mount Newton X Road corner and at the McTavish Interchange and Lochside Drive corner. Do not attempt to pass another cyclist in the coned area at these corners.\nPull to the right and stop for emergency vehicles.\nObey the directions of emergency services personnel.\n\n\nObey the directions of the marshals and officials:\n\nMarshals located at the corners of Lochside/Mt. Newton X Road and Lochside/McTavish are not authorized to stop motor vehicles.\nMarshals will raise a “Slow” sign if there is a potential danger to riders due to motor vehicles\, pedestrians or other cyclists.\nMarshals will raise a “Stop” sign if there is imminent danger.\nMarshals will wave riders through if there is no potential danger.\n\n\nBe polite to motorists\, pedestrians\, cyclists\, marshals\, and officials – even if you think that they are in the wrong.\nDo not draft other riders.\nReport the names or numbers of riders breaking these rules to the timekeeper.\n\nRiders violating these rules will be disqualified and have their time nullified for a first offence. A second offence will result in the rider being barred from the time trial for the rest of the season. \nIn addition: \n\nDo not cross the start/finish line going south after the time trial has begun ( 7 or 6:30 PM ) unless you are racing. Warm up and cool down to the north of the start/finish.\nWear your number low down in the centre of your back.\nDo not block the bicycle lane or roadway in the start/finish area after you have finished your time trial.\nWhen passing a slower rider\, try to alert him/her of your presence (e.g.\, “On your left”)\, recognizing that traffic noise and time trial helmets may make it difficult to be heard\, check for following traffic and signal your intention to move left\, if necessary\, pass with a safe lateral gap (e.g.\, 0.6 m or 2 feet\, minimum)\, and do not move to the right until well past the other rider.\nWhen being passed\, stay as far to the right as practicable\, and ride in a straight line.\n\nMay the wind always be at your back. \nSanctioned by Cycling BC

Community Cycling Initiation (CCI) is the NCCP context for coaches who will primarily work with novice\, pre-competitive cyclists at the community level\, including participants in the Active Start\, FUNdamentals and early Learn to Train stages of athlete development (outlined in Cycling Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development Model). The program is simple\, based on a number of pre-designed lesson plans\, and adaptable to the varying skill and ability levels of participants. The focus of the program is on having participants develop skills that are basic to MTB\, BMX\, and Road\, in a controlled\, off-road\, off-trail setting such as a sport field or parking lot. \nThe training required to become a Community Coach is participation in two NCCP workshops: the Community Coach “Let’s Ride”\, and the Basic Cycling Skills session\, which includes practical training. \n\nBasic Cycling Skills provides information on ethical coaching\, participants and their needs\, basic practice planning\, equipment and other important information for coaches of beginner cyclists. This portion of the course provides an opportunity for “on-bike” practice in skill teaching and analysis\, practice coaching and use of provided lesson plans. On completion of both courses\, coaches have “Trained” status in NCCP. The Basic Cycling Skills course is cross-listed with the Intro To Competition NCCP coaching stream.\n\nThe course will take place from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. \nThis course will be taught by Kurt Innes.
