Let’s Ride! Community Cycling Initiation

Let’s Ride! Community Cycling Initiation (CCI) is the NCCP context for coaches who will primarily work with novice, pre-competitive cyclists at the community level, including participants in the Active Start, FUNdamentals and early Learn to Train stages of athlete development (outlined in Cycling Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development Model). The program is simple, based on a number of pre-designed lesson plans, and adaptable to the varying skill and ability levels of participants. The focus of the program is on having participants develop skills that are basic to MTB, BMX, and Road, in a controlled, off-road, off-trail setting such as a sports field or parking lot.

The training required to become a Community Coach is participation in two NCCP workshops: Let’s Ride! Community Initiation (5hr), and the Basic Cycling Skills session, which includes practical training (8hr).

Let’s Ride! Community Initiation:

Ideal for parents, volunteers, teachers and others who occasionally work with youth or adults new to cycling, this one day, in-class workshop covers the basic principles of coaching including ethical decision making, planning and organizing a practice, cycling safety and risk management, and introducing disabled riders to the sport.  Upon completion, participating coaches achieve “In-Training” status.

This course is the minimum requirement for new coaches who would like to work with a local group or Cycling BC’s iRide program. As an alternative, coaches can skip this course and instead enroll in the Ready to Race! Training Basics course.  Community Initiation is usually offered as a 1-day (8 hours) course that includes an outdoor portion, or a night course (4-5 hours) followed by a 8-9 hr Basic Skills module.

Ready to Race! Comp-Intro: Basic Cycling Skills:

This 8-hour workshop provides coaches with the understanding and expertise required to instruct the 8 basic and 8 intermediate skills of cycling. Workshop material covers skill analysis, observation, and corrective feedback – all vital skills for coaches of both new and experienced cyclists looking to improve.  This course is part of both the Community Initiation stream and the Competition-Introduction stream. Upon completion, participating coaches achieve “Trained” status as a Community Coach.

Cycling BC is also proud to share our Coach & Builder Web illustrating additional courses available through viaSport.
