Hayman Classic Youth Stage Race: Registrations Needed!

The organizers of The Hayman Classic are seeking participants for the Hayman Classic Youth Stage Race, June 9-11, 2017.  To ensure the event is financially viable, and also create a ‘true’ stage race experience, organizers have set a goal of 75 registrations by Sunday May 14th.  As of May 3rd they are half way there.

In the unlikely scenario that insufficient registrations roll in by the deadline, all registered riders will be credited their entry fee.

Note that organizers have added U19 men (racing with U17 men).   In addition to this, experienced U13 riders are encouraged apply to Cycling BC for permission to race.   The form can be downloaded here, and must be submitted to Cycling BC 3 weeks in advance.

Comprised of four races over three days, the Hayman Classic stands almost alone on a yearly cycling calendar that caters overwhelmingly to adults. What makes the Hayman Classic distinctive is that it is open only to young cyclists, meaning those aged 13 to 19.

More than that, the races are designed to give these young cyclists a European-style experience of riding in groups or alone over courses that challenge their skill, strength and stamina against top juniors from British Columbia, Canada and the United States. For coaches and trainers, it’s a chance to take the measure of the next generation of cyclists.

For Ron Hayman, the former Olympian and pro racer behind the Hayman Classic, it’s an opportunity to nurture and encourage young riders, but more important to give them a chance to compete. Too often, he says, young riders devote hours and hours to training but rarely if ever have the chance to succeed – and fail and learn – from a hard-fought race. The Hayman Classic helps to fill that void.
