2018 BC Superweek Closes with Canadian Sweep

BC Superweek, Canada’s biggest professional road cycling series and with more than $140,000 in prize money with nine races over ten days, is a wrap for 2018.

Cycling fans were treated to a thrilling ten days of bike racing in communities all across Metro Vancouver. From July 6 – 15, BC Superweek races included the Tour de Delta presented by Beedie (July 6 – 8), New West Grand Prix (July 10), Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix (July 11), Giro di Burnaby presented by Appia Development (July 12), PoCo Grand Prix presented by Dominion Lending Centres (July 13), and Tour de White Rock presented by Landmark Premiere Properties (July 14 – 15).

In addition to the pro races, BC Superweek included a Youth Series which gave up-and-coming racers a chance to compete in six races over eight days, on the same iconic courses as the pros, in front of thousands of cheering race fans.

BC Superweek concluded with a Canadian sweep of the podium in the women’s road race at the Tour de White Rock presented by Landmark Premiere Properties Westminster Savings on the last day of racing on Sunday, July 15, 2018. Victoria’s Megan Rathwell placed 3rd, while Gillian Ellsay of Courtney, BC finished in 2nd place behind Alison Jackson of Alberta.

This year’s PoCo Grand Prix was the first-ever night-time race with racers riding under the street lights in the heart of Port Coquitlam. Camosun College student, Mitch Ketler, from Winnipeg surprised the pack and finished ahead of everyone in the men’s race including Rally Cycling’s Eric Young who had been on a streak at BC Superweek with four wins in the past week. The women’s race was a battle between national champions as reigning Canadian National Criterium Champion, Sara Bergen, of Vancouver came 2nd behind Kendall Ryan, the 2015 US National Criterium Champion. Maggie Coles-Lyster came in third place for her second time reaching the podium at the Poco GrandPrix in as many years.

Other highlights from the 2018 BC Superweek included back-to-back wins from Rally Cycling’s Eric Young at the Tour de Delta Criterium races in North Delta and Ladner plus he made history be becoming only the second man to win the Gastown Grand Prix three years in a row; the other is canadian cycling legend, Ron Hayman. Young would also continue his dominance at BC Superweek by winning the Giro di Burnaby and coming in a close second at the New West Grand Prix. Local riders Sara Bergen won the women’s race in New West and fellow Vancouverite, Haley Gill, from Rise Racing came third. BC boy, Adam de Vos, of Victoria took 1st place at the Tour de Delta Road Race.
