National Coaches Week – #ThanksCoach Houshang Amiri

September 22-30, 2018 is National Coaches Week, a time to celebrate the tremendous positive impact coaches have on athletes and communities across Canada. This week is an opportunity to recognize coaches for the integral role they play by simply saying #ThanksCoach.  You can follow all of the National Coaches Week social media action on Facebook and Twitter using hashtags #CoachesWeek and #ThanksCoach.

Cycling BC would like to say #ThanksCoach to all the coaches out there for playing a crucial role in building a healthy and active community.

We will be posting a series of coach profiles on our website throughout National Coaches Week, September 22-30,  and have asked athletes to take this opportunity to say “thanks” to their coaches.

Our #ThanksCoach spotlight today is on Houshang Amiri, Head Coach of the Pacific Cycling Centre in Victoria. Houshang has over 37 years of experience helping athletes and has helped them get to the podium over 90 times at the highest levels.

Brenna Pauly of the Tripleshot Cycling Club in Victoria had this to say about Coach Houshang.

#ThanksCoach Profile: Houshang Amiri

Pick 3 words to describe your coach.
Calm, Supportive, and Knowledgeable.

Calm: No situation causes him to stress and no matter if you’re at a race or training he’s there to keep everything running smoothly.

Supportive: He is always available to listen and give guidance.

Knowledgeable: He always has an anecdote to share if you ask him questions about situations that he has previously encountered and is able to give solid advice. He has always been able to answer any question I have thrown his way.

What does your coach do that makes him a great coach?
He looks at the athlete as a whole, not just from a training perspective, but also if you work or go to school and takes that into account when creating training plans.

Other than the sport they coach you in, what sport would you like to watch your coach try?
It’s kind of cycling related but I’d like to see him ride the e-bike at the track.

Why do you want to say “thanks, coach”?
I want to say thank you coach because he has put in many hours on evenings and weekends supporting me in my training and with my goals. There are never enough opportunities to say thank you.

#ThanksCoach
