On June 16, Race the Ridge Town Core Criterium will be the opening act of the City of Maple Ridge’s Car Free Day.
This annual cycling event has raced the streets of Maple Ridge for close to 20 years and has been part of the Race the Ridge Stage Race, traditionally held the last weekend in April. It is also known as one of the best criterium courses in BC. Moving this feature race away from its traditional date has been in the works for the past few years.
“I have been working on creating an opportunity to bring this high speed, entertaining race to the masses. With the City of Maple Ridge strongly supporting cycling events such as this one and to be able to offer my race at their first ever Car Free Day is exactly the partnership I have been looking for,” comments race director Barry Lyster.
Bike racing will start off the day’s festivities at 8:30 am with an open youth race progressing through the categories to the Pro Women’s and Men’s races starting at 11 am. There will even be a kid’s fun lap to be held at high noon.
Car Free Day will be packed with services and activities for the whole family. There will be the Greater Vancouver Food Truck Festival, Craft Beer Garden, live music, Repair Café, Electric Car display, The Maple Ridge Downtown BIA market, plus much, much more. There is even a Father’s Day pancake breakfast happening during the races!
Race the Ridge Criterium strategically falls at the end of a week of crit races including Victoria’s Russ Hay’s Grand Prix on June 9th, and the Awesome Grand Prix on June 15th in Vancouver which is also the BC Criterium Championship. This will give out of town riders more racing bang for their travel buck!
