La Paz, Mexico Emerges As World Class Cycling Destination
Titan Series Mountain Bike Stage Event is Latest Cycling Opportunity to Land in the Region
(La Paz, Mexico) – From November 12 – 16, 2020, mountain bikers from around the world will converge in Baja California Sur for the very first Titan Series – La Paz. Approximately 400 riders will compete over three stages spanning 300 kilometres of landscape that includes desert, cacti, white sand beaches and views of the Sea of Cortez.
Titan Series – La Paz is a sister event to the world-renowned Titan Desert race, which has been held in Morocco for the past 16 years. The new event in Mexico marks the first time that the series has offered an event outside of Morocco. Competitors will be welcomed to La Paz on November 12, with the three stages held November 13, 14 and 15, and a farewell breakfast on November 16. Between stages, participants will overnight in caravan camps along the stage routes. The Titan series is committed to respecting the environment around both the ride routes and the camps, and has launched a campaign specifically to implement these policies and raise awareness of sustainability issues among competitors.
This new event is one of several major sporting events to recently launch in the La Paz region, which sits just north of Los Cabos, towards the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Another example is La Etapa- La Paz by Tour de France, an event that allows both professional and amateur cyclists to experience what it’s like to ride a stage of the Tour de France. The La Paz event includes four routes: 20 km and 40 km for recreational riders, and the choice of 70 km and 120 km for those who wish to race. A maximum of 1,500 riders in total are accepted each year, and along with the rides, the event includes the official Village complete with a Tour de France museum, and plenty of cycling partners exhibiting. The inaugural event was held at the end of March 2019, and 2020 dates will be announced soon.
Other opportunities for exploring the La Paz region on two wheels abound, from renting bicycles to explore the city’s waterfront Malecon, through multi-day mountain biking camps in the surrounding desert. On the Pacific side of the Baja Peninsula, use Todos Santos as your base to explore the Sierra de la Laguna mountain trails. Over on the Sea of Cortez side, Rancho Cacachilas offers a hub with bike rentals and access to private trails, but also hosts tours to explore the surrounding Sierra Cacachilas range, from one-day experiences, through to the 4-day Secret Sierras Singletrack getaway.
