Updates to Cycling BC’s Safe Sport & Coach Excellence Policy

Updated January 28, 2022

As an accredited Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) through viaSport, Cycling BC adheres to the BC Universal Code of Conduct and remains 100% committed to creating a sports environment that is safe, free of harassment, abuse, and discrimination.

To this end, Cycling BC is updating our Safe Sport and Coach Excellence requirements to ensure a positive and safe experience for all participants of our sport.

Effective April 1, 2022, Cycling BC affiliated clubs and teams that have youth participants under the age of 19 will require club leaders working with these youth to have a current Cycling BC membership, a background check, and ethics training that includes two online courses on Safe Sport and Commit to Kids (training on preventing child sexual abuse).

This builds upon our youth club coach excellence policy initiated on April 1st, 2021 whereby Cycling BC requires all youth clubs to employ at a minimum:

  • 1 NCCP-certified Club Head (GREEN) or Performance (BLUE) coach fulfilling the role of Head Coach or Club/Team Advisor. This person mentors Club Assistants and facilitates a healthy club/team culture.
  • All coaches and instructors attending and leading practices must hold the Club Assistant (YELLOW) status. This certificate includes the SafeSport pre-requisites, Club Theory A, Basic Skills and a Club Skills module pertinent to their cycle sport.

We also recommend club head coaches of sub-age groups (i.e., U13) achieve the GREEN certificate.

Effective April 1, 2022, adult clubs offering Adult Learn-to-Ride and Learn-to-Race programs must, at a minimum, have someone that is at an NCCP Club Assistant Coach (YELLOW) status delivering the program. We invite coaches who have been running these types of programs in the past to connect with Cycling BC as we wish to create a standardized club & performance curriculum with your valued expertise.
