Ride Leader Training

Cycling BC members interested in leading recreational club rides can register for Cycling BC’s Ride Leader course to help create safer group riding experiences for their club.

This recommended course is designed to meet the needs of Cycling BC’s recreational adult cycling clubs for both road and off-road activities.

The module covers the following topics:

  • Club Culture & Why Statements
  • Route Planning & Pre-Ride Briefing
  • Insurance, Liability, & Risk Management
  • Emergency Scenarios & Action Plans
  • Traffic Safety & Road Hazards
  • Group Riding Etiquette
  • Group Riding Formations

Our Ride Leader course was developed with contributions and support from the Glotman Simpson Cycling Club and the WOW Ride Women’s Cycling Club. Cycling BC members can participate in our publically available modules or schedule a private session for their club.

To achieve ‘certified’ status, ride leaders participate in the following:

  • 2-hour ZOOM theory module (discussion-based)
  • 3-hour group ride (lead a portion of the ride)
  • Submit a reflective journal (includes pre-reading)

Participants need to hold a Cycling BC Membership or a Single-Event License. Once registered, participants receive the Ride Leader Journal and use it to complete the pre-reading activities.

Once participants pass the training, they can upgrade their Cycling BC membership to a UCI Technical License (Ride Leader) to receive a digital certificate and a showcase on our Accreditation Registry.
