Targeted Athlete Mentorship Bursary Program

The intent of the program is:

  • To support current targeted athletes as they pursue training and competition opportunities.
  • To develop and sustain mentorship and community programs.
  • To educate current and prospective coaches and to encourage targeted athletes to pursue coaching opportunities as a part of their development within cycling.

Program Details

  • Bursary Model & Compensation

    In order to receive funding, the athlete must provide mentorship and/or leadership within their cycling community. Examples include:

    • Assistant coach or mentorship during club rides
    • Fundraising leadership for local cycling club

    Athlete must have head coach or executive director of local club submit a letter of recommendation to Cycling BC on their behalf: Letter must include:

    • Club name and affiliation
    • Number of days and hours completed by participant (see Appendix A)
    • A brief description of participant’s role(s)
    • Any additional comments or information

    Athletes shall be compensated using the following wages:

    • $30/hour
    • Each athlete is eligible for a maximum of $400 per calendar year
      • This equates to 20 hours of work

    This work must be volunteer only

    • Athletes cannot be paid by their club and also collect bursary hours concurrently
  • Eligibility Requirements

    1. Athlete must submit an application, a letter of recommendation from the club they intend to work with, and an action plan for their mentorship program.

    • A written description of the training or competition opportunities they plan to pursue with the funding, in addition to a summary of their role(s) as a mentor and what they hope to learn during the process (minimum 300-words, maximum 600-words)
    • Deadline for application: March 6th
    • 10 athletes will be offered this bursary

    2. Athlete must be accepted into the targeted athlete program for the current season

    3. Athlete must complete Making Ethical Decisions online module

    • Athletes accepted into the program will have this fee paid by Cycling BC

    4. Athlete must complete SafeSport online module

  • How to apply

    Prior to the bursary being funded, the athlete must submit:

    1.  Proof of Making Ethical Decisions and SafeSport online module completion

    • A PDF copy of NCCP coach locker that displays course completion

    2. Appendix A – Mentorship Log (PDF)

    • A PDF copy of the completed table, with signature from guarantor (head coach or executive director)
    • Number of days and hours completed by participant (see Appendix A)
    • A brief description of participant’s role(s)
    • Any additional comments or information
