Athlete Spotlight: Drew Mechielsen

Drew Mechielsen’s first time on a BMX track when she was 3 years old, at Langley BMX, and has been part of the Cycling BC High Performance team for several years now. She was selected to represent Canada with the national team at the 2015 UCI Supercross World Cup (Manchester) earlier this year. and was the Junior Women’s National Champion in 2014. Next year will be her first year racing Elite.

Drew talks about her struggle with multiple injuries this year, and her plans for the 2016 season ahead.

The majority of my season has been “quiet” as I have struggled with multiple injuries since the beginning of the year.  My first injury happened in May at the World Cup in Papendal I came out with a broken hand. I had full intentions of being back to my best after that injury and being ready to go for the World Championships in July.  However, only 5 weeks after the first injury, I ended up with a broken wrist. This left me with a long recovery time and lots of challenges to overcome.
After that difficult down time, I am back on it and planning and preparing for my 2016 season. My training has been fairly local so far, at the Abbotsford track.  In December, things will ramp up a bit more as I head to France for a training camp under the direction of my coach P.H. Sauze.   There’s a lot of work to be done there, however, it should prepare me for a season filled with World Cups and overseas racing. But most of all I’m just planning on bettering myself and having a good comeback year after this past one!
BMX racing (and cycling in general) is so demanding on your body and your mind. Something that I have begun doing this year to compliment my training is yoga in my spare time. It really helps me calm down and learn to control my emotions better. It’s one of my favourite ways to relax and meditate!
I would love to thank all of my sponsors for helping me with what I do, specifically Renny and Bill Husada at Yess BMX. And of course I would like to thank my mom and dad for all the support that they give me–this would never be possible without them, and they do everything they can to help make my dream a reality!
