Just one year after a thrilling comeback performance that earned him a bronze medal at the 2025 BMX Racing World Championships in Denmark, Lucas Zhou from Surrey, BC, has secured the rainbow jersey at the 2026 UCI BMX Racing World Championships, which took place in Brisbane, Australia, on July 18-19.

“I honestly can’t believe that I am a world champion now,” said Zhou in an announcement from Cycling Canada. “It’s been something I’ve dreamed of since I began racing.” Not only is the world championship victory a milestone in Lucas’ young career, but it’s also a historic moment for the nation as Canada’s first-ever world title in Junior Men’s BMX Racing.

A product of BC’s BMX racing community, Lucas has been riding since a very young age, coming up through the grassroots club system and as an alumnus of Cycling BC’s athlete development and high performance programs. His progression as an athlete from local clubs to the provincial and national teams and as an international competitor is a great example of his commitment, skill development, and trust in the process that has eventually gotten him to where he is today—a world champion.
