Seasonal Reminder: Cycling BC Air Quality and Extreme Weather Guidelines

As we head into another summer riding season, Cycling BC is reminding riders, clubs, event organizers, coaches, commissaires, and volunteers to make weather awareness part of every ride and event plan.

Taking a few minutes to check local forecasts and air quality before riding can help reduce risks and support safer participation for everyone.

Cycling BC’s Air Quality & Extreme Weather Safety Guidelines remain an important resource for making informed decisions about training, club rides, races, and events. Whether you’re organizing an event or heading out for a recreational ride, we encourage everyone to review these guidelines and put safety first when conditions change.

Thank you for helping make our cycling community safer for everyone.

Protecting Participant Safety in Extreme Weather Conditions

Weather can be unpredictable, but preparation is key. This is why we’ve recently updated our Cycling BC Air Quality & Extreme Weather Guidelines.

The document consolidates best practices to help mitigate risks associated with extreme weather events such as poor air quality, heatwaves, and other adverse weather conditions. It provides recommended protocols including standards for air quality, activity adjustments during heatwaves (illustrated in easy-to-follow charts), and measures to manage risks in extreme-weather scenarios.

In adherence to these guidelines, everyone involved in the sport—organizers, commissaires, coaches, athletes, and even spectators—can ensure safety is a shared priority.

Let’s work together to keep everyone in sports safe under all conditions.
