September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to honour residential school Survivors, their families and communities, and to reflect on the ongoing legacy of Canada’s residential school system.
Cycling BC encourages its members and community to mark the day with care: take time to learn, listen, and reflect. September 30 is also Orange Shirt Day, and wearing orange is one way to show support for Survivors and remember the children who never returned home.
Here are a few more ways to deepen your understanding:
- Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action.
- Explore Indigenous learning opportunities, such as BCIT’s Indigenous Awareness Training.
- Learn about Orange Shirt Day.
- Find learning materials and events through the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
- Watch Picking Up the Pieces: The Making of the Witness Blanket, a documentary about the creation of the Witness Blanket featuring Cycling BC member and Tripleshot Cycling Club rider, Carey Newman.
Truth and reconciliation call for ongoing learning and action—not only on September 30, but throughout the year.
