MTB Camp #2 – Day 3

Warming up
Warming up

Although I have not been able to attend all of this camp what I have attended has been awesome. It was very educating to learn about lactate testing, and what information we can use from it. I’m definitely planning on getting a heart rate monitor after this. Friday was the first time I have ever been to a velodrome, and it was quite the experience. As stressful as it was it was also very exciting, and I have to admit it was pretty fun. Looking forward to cross country skiing with everybody tomorrow, it’ll be nice to keep up to the boys for once, and give them pointers on their technique too!  Thanks again to everyone who has helped make opportunities like this possible.

Circuit Training
Circuit Training

Cycling BC camp number two has been a good one so far. Friday we all went for testing then to the velodrome for some track riding. Yesterday we woke up to some unexpected snow which made the training a little more interesting than usual but we managed to get everything that was planned done. Today was another snow day, but once again we stuck to the schedule and got some good training in. A highlight for me was the long, snowy intervals on Saturday. It was fun racing each other too. Thank you to all the sponsors and staff that make this camp possible. We have had some good training and lots of fun, your support is very much appreciated.

Opening the shoulders up
Opening the shoulders up

So far the second Cycling BC  training camp has proved to be another tough weekend. The camp started out with some very  testing at Peak Centre in Burnaby.  We went through what all the different zones mean and what the benefits of each of them are for our training. I thought the presentation was very eye opening to how to train more efficiently and the science behind how it all works. It was also very cool to know all about your numbers and what’s going on inside your body. Next we got to go to the velodrome and got a chance to do some racing. I think the velodrome is a great place to ring up kilometers for my Strava!  The next two days were  about mental toughness. I woke up to about 4 inches of snow and it was still coming down. We rode about 70kms throughout the two days and it really focused on zone 1, zone 3, and zone 5. Overall I think that this camp has been a very beneficial camp to everyone’s development as a racer – I’m looking forward to what the rest of the year has in store for us!

Today the downhillers  started out with a rad gym session doing circuits at Challenge By Choice in Squamish – this really warmed us up.  After the gym we went in to a little zone  in Squamish that Lee Jackson helped build to get some training in on some technical and fast sections, it was awesome.  The level of snow was great too, making things a little more technical and keeping the dirt moist.  Once a few people rode the trail it could have just been a wet day.  We used Freelap poles to time certain sections of trail to try and improve on every lap down, it was awesome.  To finish off the day we had a physio session and learned how to open our shoulders up a lot more – something us mountain bikers learned we need to do more of.  Thank you to everyone who helps make these camps possible.
