As the regional championship event for Western Canada, the Western Track Challenge, January 17-19, will attract some of the best track cyclists in the country to challenge each other at high speeds on 47-degree banked corners around the wooden track of the Burnaby Velodrome. The Burnaby Velodrome, located at the Harry Jerome Sports Centre just off the Barnet Highway, is the only indoor velodrome in the Pacific Northwest which makes it a unique and attractive venue for riders wanting to escape the frigid winter weather and get in their riding fix.
Riders from neighbouring outdoor tracks like the Westshore Velodrome on Vancouver Island, the Argyll Velodrome in Edmonton, the Jerry Baker Memorial Velodrome in Washington State, and the Alpenrose Velodrome in Oregon have been known to make the trip out to the Western Track Challenge to test their skills and speed among the best. The race also serves as a platform for many U19 and U17 riders to dial in their fitness in preparation for the 2020 Junior Canadian Track Cycling Championships in April.
The Western Track Challenge races will start on Friday morning with the Individual Pursuit and Kilo/500m events, continuing throughout the weekend and concluding on Sunday with the Keirin finals, Madison, and the Marymoor Crawl/Longest Lap. Ability-based youth races are also scheduled on Saturday afternoon, giving younger riders an opportunity to race against riders of similar ability levels.
