Agency Grand Prix Gears Up in Victoria for the BC Criterium Championships this Sunday, July 16

Victoria, BC – The streets of downtown Victoria around the BC Legislature will be filled with the sights and sounds of bike racing on Sunday, July 16. The Agency Grand Prix presented by MNP will feature competitive cyclists from all over BC as they compete in a multi-lap racing format to claim the title of BC Criterium Champion. A series of 9 races will take place throughout the day consisting of both age and ability level categories, culminating in the Elite Championship races in the afternoon starting at 2:15 pm.

The event is a continuation of over 30 years of bicycle racing history in the city’s capital starting with the Bastion Square Grand Prix (1992-2008) and the Robert Cameron Law Cycling Series (2010-2019). It has spearheaded and complimented the professional cycling careers of some of Canada’s top Victoria-based cyclists such as Rob Britton, Ryder Hesjedal, Gillian Carlton, Alison Sydor, Melanie McQuaid, Riley Pickrell, and Sara Van Dam.

A Criterium is a bicycle race involving multiple laps on an enclosed circuit. During the race, mid-lap sprint prizes called “primes” are awarded to add excitement and to keep the pace of racing high. Racers race in a group and achieve speeds at over 50 km/hr while negotiating tight turns around corners. Music and race announcers provide entertainment as well as play-by-play commentary.

This year’s event will include a kids bicycle skill zone, youth race, bicycle polo tournament, beer garden, and a classic bike show.
