The Burnaby Velodrome Club will host the 2023 BC Track Cycling Provincial Championships from December 15th to 17th at its premier indoor cycling track located inside the Harry Jerome Sports Complex in Burnaby.
The timing of this year’s provincial track championships comes at a later point in the year than usual and slots in just ahead of the 2024 Canadian Elite/Masters/Para Track Championships being held at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton, Ontario, from January 5th to 7th, 2024. With the two events just weeks apart, the 2023 BC Provincial Track Championships will make for a prolific race and a fantastic tune-up for any athletes targeting nationals.
For U17 and Junior riders, provincials can also serve as an early test of fitness for the U17/Junior Track Nationals being held at the Sylvan Adams Velodrome in Bromont, Quebec, from March 22-24, 2024.
“Moving the provincial track championships date to the winter helps us prime our BC riders for success at nationals in Milton,” says Thomas D’Arcy, Cycling BC’s Event Operations Manager. “I’m excited to see the level of competition at provincials this year as riders get into peak form.”
The Burnaby Velodrome has long been a cornerstone of the province’s cycling scene since it opened in the late 1990s. Many talented and notable riders including BC Sports Hall of Fame member, Brian Walton, and Paralympic gold medalist, Tristen Chernove, have graced the 200-meter-long wooden track with their athletic talent. Today’s high-performance athletes and weekend warriors alike frequent the facility on a regular basis as it is the only indoor velodrome in the Pacific Northwest.
The 2023 BC Track Provincials will continue the tradition of riders displaying their strength and speed, especially since the track has 47-degree banked corners (15 degrees in the straightaways) that require riders to maintain a speed of at least 30km per hour in order to avoid falling off the track.
