Cycling BC Reboots BC Cup Series with New Sponsor, Name, and Jersey

Cycling BC, in partnership with Cobotix Manufacturing Inc., is re-launching its provincial race series formerly known as the BC Premier Series and renaming it the BC Cup presented by Cobotix.

The BC Cup p/b Cobotix consists of a series of races in which riders can accumulate points based on their results from each race. The riders are then ranked in the series standings and the highest placed rider at the conclusion of the final race will be named the overall series winner. Winners will be adorned with the BC Cup winner’s jersey at the final race of the series and honoured at the Annual Cycling BC Season Wrap-up in November. There will be a BC Cup series for each of the Road, Mountain Bike Cross-country Olympic (XCO), Cross-country Marathon (XCM), BMX, and Downhill disciplines in 2019. Each discipline will share the BC Cup name but each series will feature a slightly different structure that is relevant to each discipline’s unique ecosystem.

The BC Cup creates a competitive landscape that will give riders the opportunity to participate in high-quality racing regularly throughout the course of the season. “As a racer, I want to feel like each event I enter is part of something bigger; something that ties it all together and keeps me motivated all season long,” says Cory Ostertag, Manager of Events and Member Services at Cycling BC. “We’ve been working with many dedicated race organizers across the province to deliver a series of races that riders can look forward to and elevate their game to the next level as they battle it out for the BC Cup; no small feat. We want British Columbians to feel excited about bike racing and raise the profile of the fantastic racing scene we have in BC.”

Erin Waugh, Executive Director of Cycling BC, says that having Cobotix Manufacturing on board as the presenting partner gave Cycling BC an opportunity to look at renaming the series. “Of course we wanted to have the Cobotix name in the title but we have also been listening to the voice of the race community. The series had been called the ‘BC Cup’ in the past and it was renamed the ‘Premier Series’ in more recent years but the Premier Series name never really stuck. We were finding that ‘BC Cup’ was very much ingrained in the race community’s vernacular so we went back to it.”

“BC Cup also puts us in better alignment, in name, with Cycling Canada’s Canada Cup and other provincial cycling association’s series’ such as the Ontario Cup and Alberta Cup,” adds Waugh.

Cobotix Manufacturing Inc., a leading Canadian metal fabricator headquartered in Port Coquitlam, BC has come on board as the presenting partner for 2019. “As an avid cyclist for most of my life, I want to help make a difference by having Cobotix take on the presenting sponsor role for the BC Cup series for the 2019-2020 season,” said Ron Adolf, President of Cobotix Manufacturing. “The team at Cobotix is excited to be involved with the BC Cup and we are looking forward to working with everyone in the Cycling BC community.” In addition to financial support, Cobotix manufactures and supplies event medals for races and encourages their team to attend and cheer on the athletes.

The 2019 BC Cup calendar of races is now available on the Cycling BC website by navigating to Events, BC Cup, and clicking on the series of your choice.

The BC Cup winner’s jersey design will be voted on by the Cycling BC community.
