Cycling BC Update: Looking to the Future and a Return to Play

Updated May 13th: View Cycling BC’s Return to Sport Update – May 13th

As the BC government starts to look at easing some of the measures put in place to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Cycling BC, together with Cycling Canada, Sport BC, and viaSport is also starting to look at what a return to cycling might look like in the current COVID-19 environment.

While the timeline for a return to sport in BC is still to be determined by the Provincial Health Authorities, viaSport has begun the process of reaching out to Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) to communicate the government’s priorities and initiate the conversation about our collective effort as a sector to return to sport using a controlled, safe, and phased approach.

For some sports, the strategy for a return to play may be easier than others and with a phased approach in mind, a return to cycling will be very different than what we have been used to pre COVID-19.

Above all, Cycling BC’s number one priority is the safety of our members and their families. A strategy for returning to cycling amid COVID-19 will require the right balance of processes, measures, and managing risks to keep our communities safe. The first phase of re-opening activities could include setting limits on group sizes while maintaining physical distancing, making modifications to activities, or shifting the focus to skill development versus competition – especially for sports where it would be difficult to maintain physical distancing.

Cycling BC will continue to act in accordance with guidelines from Cycling Canada, public health officials, and in consultation with key stakeholders, will be working towards developing the first phase of a return to sport plan that can be implemented as soon as it is allowed. Once the plan is developed, it will be shared with viaSport and will require the final approval of the Provincial Health Officer/Ministry of Health.

We will continue to update our community on any developments through our website, emails, newsletters and social media channels.

In the meantime, Cycling BC encourages our members and the cycling community to stay strong, keep riding indoors or ride alone outside or only with members of your household, and to stay safe.

Thank you for your ongoing patience, cooperation, and support.
