EXPERIENCE IN CYCLING AND VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS:
I have been cycling for as long as I can remember. My first real bike (with apologies to my trusty tricycle) was a catalogue ordered red & white cruiser - which at the time had to be shipped to a remote community in Labrador where we were living. I literally road that bike into the ground & thus was born my love of cycling. This interest continued for many years afterwards. Over that time I tried my hand at many different types of cycling including BMX, road & mountain biking. Like so many in our community, my story after that is typical... in my 20s my priorities shifted by necessity to being a new dad, finishing up schooling, finding a job, etc. This all meant less time & money to pursue my passion. Cycling (regretfully) began falling by the wayside.
Some years later I found myself on the wrong end of the health spectrum; overweight, overworked, and managing stress poorly. Ultimately this led to several operations, a few less body parts, and a need to make a choice as to how I was going to continue living my life. Among many changes I made, one was a return to cycling & along with this, a rekindled love of our sport.
Since then, I've made incredible some friends in the cycling community, never been healthier (literally!), and become a de facto ambassador for the sport - singing its praises whenever & whenever I can. It is not an exaggeration to say that cycling has been a life saver for me, as it has been for so many of us.
My decision to run for this position comes from a feeling that it's my time to step up, give back, and help sell the many benefits of this sport while working diligently to make it safer for all involved (riders, drivers & pedestrians).
These days when I'm not out training solo or riding with friends, you can find me racing the Victoria Cycling League (road & TT) in the Masters Cat 3 group (ProCity) or out on a group ride with Sidney TNRG (Tuesday Night Ride Group) - another cycling activity I enjoy immensely.
I'm hoping, with your support, to take this passion and knowledge to CyclingBC to help continue nurturing & growing this sport both in our beautiful province and beyond.
ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE
I am a lifelong entrepreneur and have owned and managed several businesses over my lifetime (re. IT recruitment, IT program management and now a law practice). I am used to working with all types of individuals in highly stressful environments, often with high expectations & urgent deliverables. One of the strengths I bring to the table is in offering creative, original & effective solutions to complex situations. Working both independently and/or as part of a dynamic team focused on delivering sustainable results brings me a great deal of satisfaction. When it comes to rolling up the sleeves and getting something done, I'm usually the first in line.
HOW DO YOU THINK YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE TO CYCLING BC’s DEVELOPMENT?
I believe in the power of cycling... not just as a sport but as a healthy lifestyle. It is my passion to see the sport in BC grow not only in the competitive ranks but also for the betterment of cyclists at all levels, regardless of location or skill level. I believe that my background as both an attorney and competitive cyclist provides me with a unique position from which to approach furthering the admirable goals of Cycling BC.
