Bigger is better – that’s the theme for the 2015 Giro. Sponsored by Robert J Macdonald, the Giro is open to riders licensed in Category 1, 2 or 3 only. The Giro will offer prize money to a winning field of both male and female athletes to a depth of 20 deep. That’s right, the first 20 finishers for both men and women will receive prize money!
This is a sanctioned event, open to riders who have a valid UCI road racing license in Cat 1, 2 or 3 (Masters must have a current Cat 1, 2 or 3 license). All Giro riders will be asked to show their current UCI road racing license at Package Pickup at the Welcome GranFesta on Friday, September 11, 2015. Please note, this is an individual category only – NO TEAM results.
Both males and females will start en masse and will ride the GranFondo 122km route from Vancouver to Whistler. Start corral opens at 6:15am to Giro riders after the Forte riders have cleared the start area. Prior to 6:15am, Giro riders can stage in the Giro Staging area (see map). The Giro Category and staging corral has replace the Licensed Rider Corral.
NO outside, on-course support will be permitted. Riders can only receive nutritional and liquid support from rest stops provided by the GranFondo Whistler event. Any rider seen accepting assistance from non-event sources will be disqualified immediately with no chance of grievance.
Results and prize money for the Giro will be based on Gun time. A rider’s finish time will be determined by the elapsed time of when he or she crosses the finish line in relation to the official event start time, NOT when the rider crosses the start line. Because prize money is up for grabs in the Giro category, participants in the Giro are not eligible for prizing in either the King of the Mountain or Squamish Sprint Challenges.
Professional timing services are being supplied by Event Day Timing and timing chip technology will employ Chronotrack B-Tag, a proven technology for cycling event timing. The timing mechanism will be affixed to the seat poast.
