The Day of the Hour event is a nationally-sanctioned, day-long track event held at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre Velodrome in Milton, Ontario where as many as eight pre-selected riders race against the clock, one at a time, in an attempt to establish a new record in their respective categories for the longest distance travelled in one hour.
On Saturday, August 24, 2024, two riders from Courtenay, BC—Barb Morris and Derek Steel— both of whom ride with the Comox Valley Cycle Club, were among the seven athletes who rode to their maximum effort in a bid to set the Hour record in their category.
Barb Morris set a new Canadian record for Master Women (65-69) with a distance of 38.838km and Derek Steel set a new Canadian and World record for Master Men (80-84) with a distance of 39.836km.
Other individual records achieved at this year’s Day of the Hour include Ralph Schatzmair of Toronto who set a new World and Canadian Master Men’s (65-69) record with a distance of 44.662km and Pat Baker of Laguna Hills, California, opened and set a new World and American Hour record for Master Women (85-89) at 24.978km.
Congratulations to all the athletes on their remarkable efforts on the Day of the Hour.
