***IMPORTANT INFORMATION***
A Cycling BC Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) was held virtually on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, to vote on the proposed membership dues structure for 2024. As part of the meeting’s proceedings, a motion was proposed, which was approved by a majority of those present, to postpone the ratification of the proposed membership dues until Cycling BC can provide more details.
In response to the motion, Cycling BC has provided additional details surrounding the proposed membership dues and will hold another Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to be held online via Zoom on Monday, December 18, 2023, at 7:00 PM (PST).
As per Cycling BC’s bylaws, membership dues will be determined annually by Cycling BC Staff, recommended for approval by the Board and ratified by the Members at a General Meeting; the purpose of the December 18th EGM is to present the 2024 membership fee structure and to vote on the proposed 2024 fees based on the information that has been provided.
Members who are unable to attend the meeting online are able to appoint a proxy to vote on their behalf at the meeting. Please download, complete, and submit the proxy to Cycling BC according to the dates indicated on the proxy form.
To ensure that the process is fair, transparent, and that members have ample opportunity to review the proposal in advance of the EGM, where members will have the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarifications, we have provided the proposed 2024 fee structure below along with additional supporting information.

As a Cycling BC member, you are part of a community of over 6,000 cycling enthusiasts and we need your help to continue improving and growing our sport.
With the support of the board and after thoughtful consideration, we’re proposing a modest increase that will help us continue providing best-in-class programs, on top of 24/7 accident insurance whenever you ride your bike & general liability insurance for events and club rides.
That’s peace of mind, knowing that for the price of 2 coffees (roughly the cost of the increase for most licence types), every time you get on your bike—you’re covered—and you also have access to additional member benefits.

Cycling BC faces increasing financial pressure due to rising costs in affiliation fees, insurance and operating expenses:
1. Increase in Cycling Canada affiliation fees:
Affiliation fees to Cycling Canada, the national governing body for cycling, play a crucial role in advancing and promoting the sport of cycling across the country including such things as National Development and Coaching programs, Event Support, Officials Development, National Teams, Advocacy and Sport Development, Youth and Grassroots Initiatives, just to name a few.
2. A 10% increase in insurance premiums:
Insurance costs are rising not just because of market conditions but also because Cycling BC members are using the insurance coverage provided with their membership.
In addition, we’ve been able to support the families of members with catastrophic injuries because of the insurance included with membership. Some were injured during non-sanctioned rides and the 24/7 accident insurance was able to cover them.
Participation in the insurance program means that support is there if needed and that those who need it, are supported at lower prices. The support that our 24/7 coverage has provided members has the potential to be life-changing.
3. Inflation and rising operating costs:
We must consider the impact of inflation and rising costs to ensure ongoing sustainability.
We are committed to a fee increase using a similar model to 2023. In 2024, Cycling BC will conduct a full review of our membership structure with community input and consultation.
If the new fees are approved, we will continue to offer early bird registration discounts and discounted rates for families to ensure membership remains accessible.
The fee increase will continue to allow members to benefit from the insurance coverage and the many programs and services delivered by Cycling BC.
The board of directors keeps strong financial oversight and accountability of the organization’s financial well-being. Your elected board of directors ensures that members’ fees are used responsibly. A financial committee made up of members is also in place to perform regular audits and reporting of the organization’s financial status.
In recent times, we’ve had to make some tough decisions to streamline our operations and ensure financial sustainability. One of these difficult decisions has involved reducing the number of staff. While these cost-saving measures are necessary to address our financial situation, we remain committed to delivering the programs and services you rely on.
We are looking at all areas of the business including our current office space and will consider what is best for the organization. Our lease is up in spring 2024. If you or someone you know may have space to donate, please contact us.
As a Provincial Sport Organization (PSO), Cycling BC is mandated to deliver programming related to participation in sports, coaches’ development, athletes’ development, as well as races and events. Consequently, as a PSO, we also have access to grants and any further cuts to programming may result in a loss of grant revenue, which could put Cycling BC in an even more vulnerable situation.
We will continue to look for cost efficiencies where possible that have little to no impact on our government funding.
We value your input. Please use this contact form and more importantly, consider attending the EGM to ask your questions and cast your vote on this important matter.
If the fee increase is not approved, we will face financial challenges that will affect the quality of our programs and services. Together with our members, we hope to secure the long-term future of the organization.
