The final race of the 2022 BC CUP Downhill mountain bike series came to a close on Sunday, September 18th at Coast Gravity Park in Sechelt, BC. After six rounds of racing that started in Whistler and traversed through BC’s marquee mountain destinations including stops at SilverStar, Fernie, Panorama, Mt.Washington, and Big White—the finale would be the series’ ultimate climax.
Fresh off a UCI World Cup win at Val di Sole in Italy and winning the World Cup Overall title as a second-year Junior, Sechelt’s own Gracey Hemstreet returned home to the Sunshine Coast to race in the final BC Cup of the season. To no surprise, Hemstreet won the UCI Junior Women’s race at Coast Gravity Park, close to four seconds ahead of Squamish’s Lucey Van Eesteren who finished in 2nd place. Powell River’s Sophia Ervington came in 3rd and Sophi Lawrence of Whistler came in 4th. With a 3rd place finish, Ervington earned enough points to jump ahead of series leader Eva Leikermoser, who did not race in the final, to win the overall BC Cup among UCI Junior Women.
Also coming off the World Cup circuit, Tegan Cruz of Pemberton, BC, raced in his second BC Cup of the season and won the UCI Junior Expert Men’s race ahead of Zac Stratton, also of Pemberton, and Cole Stinson from Black Creek, Vancouver Island. None of the Junior Expert Men podium finishers would rack up enough points overall to catch Brock Hawes of Sun Peaks for the overall BC Cup win.
Kelowna’s Brittany Gustafson took first place among the UCI Pro/Elite Women at Coast Gravity, followed by Lucy Schick from Gibsons and Emilie-Soleil Patterson from Rossland rounding out the top three on the day. The overall BC Cup for Pro/Elite Women would be awarded to Bailey Goldstone who podiumed in all four of the BC Cup races she competed in this season.
The UCI Pro/Elite Men’s category would come down to the last race to determine the 2022 BC Cup overall winner as several riders were still within reach of the title heading into the final. The day would belong to Peter Knott from Garibaldi Highlands who took 1st place, followed by Heiko Krause of Smithers in 2nd and Garrett Macintosh of Calgary in 3rd. Adam Woodhouse of North Vancouver came into Coast Gravity as the series leader but an 8th place finish on the day would prove costly as Knott took the overall lead with the win leading to an overall BC Cup title for 2022.
The overall BC Cup winners in the adaptive mountain bike category (aMTB) were decided after the Panorama Race in July and they are Landon McGauley of Kamloops for the men and Amanda Timm from Canmore for the women.
