The 2014 BMX Supercross season kick off in Manchester this weekend with B.C. athletes Tory Nyhaug, Jim Brown and James Palmer looking to score podium performances. The two-day competition starts on Friday April 18 with the Time Trials and ends on Saturday April 19 with the featured BMX motos and main events. Watch it live here!
Canada will have four riders wearing the National Team uniform at the event, including five-time Canadian Champion and Olympian Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC. He will be joined by Jimmy Brown of Airdrie AB, who is coming back from a 10-month rest period as a result of an injury, Corey Walsh of Ayr, ON and James Palmer of North Vancouver, who took the second place in the elite category of the Canadian BMX Championships in 2013.
All four riders have participated in UCI BMX Supercross events in previous years.
“I’m excited to open the World Cup season next weekend in Manchester. I’ve been racing a lot this year and I’m ready to go. I’ve raced 2 races on SX tracks so far this year and they have gone well,” said Nyhaug, who is ranked sixth in the World rankings of SuperCross and represented Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. “I know that I’m in great race shape right now and I’m confident in myself. As always the goal is to race consistent and be in the final and once there, go for the win.”
For the season, Nyhaug is looking for consistency. “I’m looking to have fun racing the whole SX World Cup circuit again. Racing consistent every weekend is going to be key in the chase for the title, and that’s my goal.”
Jimmy Brown shares Nyhaug’s feelings on getting back on the Supercross track: “I am feeling confident getting back on the SX tracks after recovering from last year’s shoulder injury. I have put in a lot of hard work in the off season and I am feeling better than ever and ready to do my country proud on a world stage. I am feeling more prepared than I ever have for a World Cup event and I have some big goals, so hopefully all goes well and I can come home with a big result.”
Ken Cools, Head Coach of the Canadian BMX Team, is excited about the start of the new Supercross season: “Olympic qualification will begin this year and racing in Manchester will give an opportunity to dial in racing on SX tracks and better prepare athletes for the upcoming races that offer points.”
