BMX national championships were held in Drummondville, QC this passed weekend for the second year in a row. Seven athletes travelled to the event with Cycling BC. Thursday the athletes enjoyed a solid practice session on the track, dialing it in pretty quickly. On Friday the team was at the track early for a practice session before getting into the evening’s first event, the time trials.
The Cycling BC crew had a pretty successful trial with Alex Tougas winning his first national Championship jersey in Junior men and Tory Nyhaug winning his fifth Elite men’s trail title. Erin Kinnie made the podium in Elite Female with a third place, and James Palmer placed third in Elite men.
Race day Saturday brought us some very exciting action. All the BC athletes made the finals and were charging for the number one plate and National Championship. For the second day in a row, BC athletes stood on top of the Junior and Elite Men’s podiums, Alex Tougas winning his first National Championship in a Championship class and Tory Nyhaug continue his domination over the Elite men’s class with his fifth straight national title. James Palmer also grabbed second place in Elite men with a last straight pass. BC athletes also took third in Elite Female from Erin Kinnie and third in Junior Men from Chris White (BC born). Jared Ennis (4th) and Brandon Reid (5th) wrapped up the Elite men’s results.
The Grecht family was also on hand and in force. All three Grecht’s placed 2nd place at the National Championship. Great racing by Aiden, Alex and Alison.
Here’s is what the athletes had to say about the races.
Awesome day racing with the Team, thanks to the support of Cycling BC and Cycling Canada and some hard work I was able to get the Junior National Title.
– Alex Tougas
Thanks Cycling BC for the support and to Adam for helping me out with video taping and anything I needed this trip to perform at my best. Very happy to win the National Championships again this year.
– Tory Nyhaug
An exciting day here at Canadian National Championships! Lots of awesome race action throughout all the classes! Had some great support from Adam Muys and Cycling BC making sure I had everything I needed to succeed! Used that to bring home a solid 2nd place silver medal in the Elite mens Category.
– James Palmer
A solid finish for myself and for the whole team today, thanks to Adam Muys and Cycling BC for their support in making this a great trip! And thank you to Cycling BC’s sponsors for helping us reach our potential. Happy with how I rode and with my results, ended off with a 4th place in Elite Men.
– Jared Ennis
Today overall was not what I was looking for. But in the bigger picture I had an awesome day on my bike. Shout out to the Cycling BC sponsors for making things possible. On to the next one!

On Sunday was Canada Cup #5. With the valuable UCI points on the line, the athletes battled for the top spots. James Palmer came out swinging and took a step up on the podium to claim the first place finish in Elite Men. Alex Tougas smashed the Junior men’s final and took his third win of the weekend.
Another awesome day here in Drummondville with the Cycling BC Crew for the 5th Canada Cup event of the year! It was a super hot and muggy day today, so what a treat it was to have Adam Muys and Cycling BC here to support us in making sure we were always fueled and hydrated which allowed me to perform to the best of my abilities and pick up the Elite men win! – James Palmer
This was Connor McCormick’s first team event with Cycling BC. I have to compliment the Elite athletes on the team: they were amazing at supporting him and helping throughout the weekend. Connor didn’t have the best first round, the team supported him and he picked it up and made the final. In the final, he places seventh in 16 Boys. On Sunday he raced Junior Devo and had to hit the pro section. Tory Nyhaug, being the amazing ambassador he is, helped Connor with how to hit the pro section. It’s was great to see this peer-coaching happen. – Adam Muys
Thanks Cycling BC for this amazing trip and to Adam Muys for supporting and coaching me beforehand. I’m happy I made the main in my second nationals ever. I learned so much on this trip and hope I can join the team on more events like this one. The team also taught me on Sunday how to jump “pro sections”. I feel like I’m a better rider from going on this trip. – Connor McCormick
