This weekend the BMX Development and Provincial teams got together for training camps, working with provincial team coaches to challenge their riding and develop their skills.
A great turn out of Island riders joined the BMX development team on Saturday at the Nanaimo BMX Track, for this season’s fourth BMX Development training camp, with some new faces and great competition for all. Coach James Palmer is just back from World Championships, and he and coach Mischa Partridge planned a challenging day for the team. Partridge said, “today I really wanted the team to work on their focus. At this point in the season we are really looking to mitigate the number of mistakes each lap, and for riders to focus on riding clean laps.”
True to their plan, the team had each athlete ride three full laps back to back. On the long and smooth Nanaimo BMX track, this was certainly enough to get cheeks rosy and hearts pounding.
The development team has one more week of training left before BC Cups 3 & 4 at Ridge Meadows BMX, and is just over two weeks away from our annual trip to the USABMX Lumberjack Nationals. Coach Mischa Partridge will accompany the team to the race, located in Sumner, WA this year, and help them in warm-up, practice, and perform in two days of racing in what, for many of them, will be their biggest race of the season.

On Sunday, June 12th the, BMX provincial team met at Abbotsford BMX for a training session. The training session started with some warm up drills in the rhythm section before moving into the last turn for some cornering work. After working on carving the last turn, the group moved to the second straight for some jumping practice, where some of the male athletes aim to learn to jump the pro section by trying the first jump.
With the skill-based portion of the camp out of the way, the team moved to the amateur start hill for some first straight and gate training. The athletes then transitioned to the supercross hill for some practice on the this portion of the track.
Up next for the BC provincial team is a strength and conditioning session on June 25th, and Canada Cups #3/4 and #5/6 in Drummondville and Toronto.
