The BMX team travelled to Montreal on June 30th to compete in Canada Cup #3 & #4 in Drummondville. At the Drummondville races, the team raced well, with almost all of the eight athletes making the podium, and BC athletes holding four of the six red leaders plate for the Canada Cup series on Saturday. On Sunday the team continued their solid racing, but a couple of spills kept a few athletes from the finals. James Palmer and Alex Tougas finished the weekend with two wins each, in the Elite and Junior men classes.
Following the event in Drummondville, the team traveled to Toronto for a week of training on the Pan Am track before Canada Cups #5 & #6. After travelling to Toronto on Monday, the athletes hit the track on Tuesday & Wednesday, working on learning the new track and developing their skill on the SX hill. Thursday was a day off, so the group went downtown Toronto for dinner and a Blue Jays game. On Friday the team was back at it, getting ready for the weekend’s races. Several Rio-bound athletes showed up for the competition, which added some great racing in the Elite classes and excitement for the local fans.
In racing we continued our solid campaign with podium finishes in almost of all the Canada Cup classes. Alex Tougas and Aidan Webber won both days in Junior men and Junior Devo men. Alison Grecht took second place both days in Junior Devo Female. Canadian Olympian Tory Nyhaug took second place on Sunday behind American Olympian Connor Fields.
Great racing on both weekends by BC athletes. BC riders still hold 4 of the 6 red leaders plates and the team is looking forward to Nationals in August in Calgary, AB.
