The Wheelhouse Cycling Society is very pleased to bring the Cycling BC iRide Expo for kids to the Lazer Canadian Cyclocross Championships at Bear Mountain on November 27th and November 28th, 2021.
“We always strive to bring kids activities into our events so they benefit from an amazing atmosphere and are inspired to pursue the sport of cycling,” says event director, Jon Watkin. “It begins at the grassroots level to have kids experience the simple joy of riding a bike and having the satisfaction of gaining confidence and new skills.”
Since 2013, Cycling BC’s iRide program has been visiting school districts in British Columbia with their enthusiastic expert coaches to introduce skills-based cycling activities to elementary school-aged kids. Over 60,000 kids across BC have benefitted from this program and many more will have the chance to experience it across the country as the program is geared to launch nationwide.
During the 2021 Cyclocross National Championships weekend, kids ages 3-11 will be organized in groups and led by expert coaches in skills sessions and fun races on a dedicated kid’s course at Bear Mountain.
“Kids will have an opportunity to learn how to lift their front wheel, ride the big teeter-totter, surf the dirt and corner like a champ,” says Ben Chaddock, iRide Program Manager. “Our instructors are excited to help kids develop their cycling abilities using fun physical literacy movements and games; this way we can all say with confidence – iRide Cyclocross!”
The iRide skills sessions and kids races are free; pre-registration is required. Kids are encouraged to bring their own bikes but Cycling BC will also have a limited fleet of bikes and helmets available for those that do not have their own.
