Mel Pemble of Victoria, BC set two new national records at the 2022 Canadian Elite/Masters/Para Track Cycling Championships last weekend in Milton, Ontario. Pemble set new national records in the Women’s Para C3 500m Time Trial and Individual Pursuit events—both of which were also by Pemble and set at last year’s national championships.
A triad of Men’s Masters riders from BC were also busy breaking records at the championships as Keith Bruneau of North Vancouver and Thomas Schelensy of West Vancouver both bested the previous Canadian record in the Master C Men’s 500m TT, while Vancouver’s Uli Mayer became the new national record holder in Master C Men’s Individual Pursuit.
While no new national records were set by BC riders in the Elite races, multiple national titles were won by Victoria’s Sarah Van Dam (Individual Pursuit, Madison) and Maple Ridge’s Maggie Coles-Lyster (Omnium, Team Pursuit). Sean Richardson & Amiel Flett-Brown of Vancouver, Daniel Fraser-Maraun of Anmore, and Erin Attwell of Victoria won gold with their respective composite teams in the Team Pursuit. BC’s only other Para rider in the championships, Lachlan Hotchkiss of Surrey, won gold in the Men’s Para C4 Kilo and Pursuit events.
