The 2023 Canadian Junior, U17, and Para Track Championships will take place at the brand-new Sylvan Adams Velodrome located in Bromont, Quebec. The 250-metre indoor cycling track was opened last September 2022 as a replacement for the outdoor Bromont Velodrome which originally opened in 2001 and recently closed in 2020.
In just a few days, Canada’s best U17, Junior, and Para track cyclists will take to the new facility and put out some hard laps on the track’s fresh boards as they compete for championship medals and national championship maple leaf jerseys.
Cycling BC’s contingent of athletes will consist of a squad of four young developing riders including Sidney Swierenga (DEVO), Monty Rigby (DEVO), Oscar Wong (Tripleshot) and Kimberly Chen (The Cycling Co.). The team is supported by coach Tim Sherstobitoff and Cycling BC’s Athlete Development Manager, Tara Mowat.
“It’s going to be an exciting weekend of racing with a mix of athletes attending their first national championships and some returning athletes vying for another chance to compete for a maple leaf jersey,” says Tara Mowat, Cycling BC’s Athlete Development Manager. “Our athletes and coaches have put in a ton of work this year and have been incredibly creative with their training given the temporary closure of the Burnaby Velodrome. Everyone’s stoked to hit the boards again!”
The Cycling BC squad will also be cheering on and providing support to some of their fellow BC riders who will be riding for their clubs—Xavier Fell (DEVO), Amos Scott Bouris (Tripleshot), and Isla Rendle (Tripleshot). A couple of BC para cyclists will also be contending for national titles at the event, Lachlan Hotchkiss of Surrey and Para Track Cycling World Champion Mel Pemble of Victoria. Junior rider Allison Lee-Meyer will also be competing and riding for the Burnaby Velodrome Club. The 2023 Track Cycling Championships for U17/Jr/Para riders provide a platform for our BC athletes to further develop their skills and showcase their talent on the national stage.
Racing will take place from Friday, March 31st to Sunday, April 2nd and will include a range of events such as the Individual Pursuit, Elimination, Points, Scratch, Sprint, Keirin, Kilo/500m TT, Team Pursuit, Team Sprint, and the Madison.
