iRide Coaching Course

Over the weekend of Nov 8th, iRide coordinator Ben Chaddock ran an NCCP Let’s Ride and Basic Cycling Skills course for new community-level coaches in Vancouver. Participants included a diverse mix, with six adult and six U23 riders, including four participants from Kamloops.

Ben reports:

Every time I do one of these courses, I learn some amazing new game or teaching technique.  Some of our participants were seasoned youth coaches who made the trip down to Vancouver to fulfill their iRide credentials. Our morning in-class session was enlightening, and the level of experience in the room created a great atmosphere for dialogue and reviewing situations from different points of view.

Our afternoon season included a group test and an individual test, providing each participant with the opportunity to take hold the class for five minutes and teach us all one skill. Of our large contigent of young participants, Jackson Pickell, who volunteered as an iRide coach shadow the week leading up the event, practiced his skills and is currently coaching at Bear Creek Elementary this week in Surrey. We also had two U23 riders from Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc take the course, and we are looking to create an iRide presence in their community next spring with their assitance.

My favourite part of the weekend was BEAR ATTACK! A great drill for building body position awareness and practicing the ready position for off-road riding.

Unfortunately, our upcoming November 21st / 22nd NCCP Let’s Ride and Basic Cycling Skills coaching course has been cancelled as registration failed to meet the minimum registration requirement of 8 participants. However, we will be offering another certification opportunity in Vancouver early in the new year.
