Editor’s Note, updated May 28, 2021 – We have received further clarification that outdoor adult sport should be capped at 50 people for now (Step 1) and youth outdoor sport has no maximum in order to accommodate adult supervision. Safety plans should also be adjusted to align with Step 1 of BC’s restart plan. While we anticipate further guidance will be coming for our sector, please hold the line for now and keep group sizes small and activities local as much as possible. Thank you.
To Cycling BC members,
The BC Government introduced the province’s four-step Restart Plan today and there is a lot of hope and optimism surrounding the reopening of activities in BC. We sense that there is a lot of excitement brought on by today’s news and still some uncertainty about what is allowed and what isn’t allowed.
viaSport has informed us that they are working closely with the government to get further clarity regarding some of the terms and language in the Restart Plan and how it impacts sport through the various steps.
In the meantime, what we do know in Step 1 of the Restart Plan and a couple of immediate changes impacting our sport include,
- Physical distancing is no longer required while participating in the group outdoor sport activity. So if you’re out for a group ride, you no longer need to keep a 3-meter distance between you and the next rider.
- Physical distancing (2m) and the wearing of masks is still required outside the ‘field of play’. For example, when you gather before or after a ride, be sure to keep your distance (2m) and wear a mask. Also, please continue to stay home if you are not feeling well.
- The limit on the number of adult group sport participants outdoors has also been lifted meaning you can have groups of more than 10 people. (50 max)
Restrictions on non-essential travel in BC are still in place and thus we are encouraging members to keep activities local until the travel restrictions are eased which is anticipated to happen as early as the middle of June (Step 2).
Spectators are still not permitted under the current restrictions and won’t be introduced for outdoor sports until Step 2.
Cycling BC will await further clarification and information from viaSport with more specific details about reopening our sport in BC, particularly around competition and racing; we will provide further updates as we move along the restart plan.
We thank you for your continued support and patience. We are excited to see that things are gradually starting to improve and we will be working diligently to get us back on track.
