Cycling BC is proud to announce the dates and hosts of the 2022 Provincial Championships for Mountain Bike Cross-country (XC), Road (Time Trial, Road Race, Criterium), Downhill mountain bike, and Cyclocross (CX).
Cross-country mountain bikers will have the first crack at winning a provincial championship jersey in 2022 as riders are welcomed back to Abbotsford, BC on Sunday, May 22nd to race at Glenridge Acres. This will be the second consecutive XC mountain bike provincials on this course which is situated on a private trail network with plenty of single-track that is suitable for a wide range of ability levels.
The weekend of May 28th-29th will have roadies flocking to Hatzic Valley in Mission, BC for the Time Trial and Road Race provincial championships (Elite, Master, and Junior). After two years without a provincial road championships race in BC, last year’s provincials was one of the largest attended road championships in recent years. It was also one of the hottest as it took place in mid-summer at the tail end of a major heatwave and widespread wildfires in BC. This year’s race should prove to be much cooler in late May. Criterium racers will have their turn at a provincial championship one week later on Sunday, June 5th in the provincial capital, Victoria, BC.
Downhill mountain bikers will have lots to look forward to in 2022. Not only will there be a return to a full BC Cup schedule but Cycling BC is making significant investments in new race timing services. The new Zone4 timing equipment will allow for course split times as well as live timing for spectators. The new system will be in use all season long including at the Provincial Championships set to take place at SilverStar Mountain Resort on July 10th. The 2022 championships will also be the first time that Cycling BC will award a Championship jersey in the adaptive category.
Regional health orders and travel advisories stemming from both the Covid-19 pandemic and extreme weather events throughout the province last autumn cancelled any chance of hosting a BC Cyclocross Provincial Championships in 2021. This year, cyclocross racers can plan well in advance as the CX provincial championships will return to the School of Hard Knox pb Chainline Cycles on the weekend of November 6, 2022, in Kelowna, BC.
“Provincial Championship races are important targets within a hectic calendar,” said Cory Ostertag, Operations Manager at Cycling BC. “Together with our community of host organizers, we’re excited to see a full return to competition in 2022 and make these special events an awesome experience for everyone involved.”
Cycling BC is currently assessing various options and working with organizers to determine dates for the 2022 BC Provincial Championships in BMX and Track cycling which will be announced at a later date.
