Cycling Legend Greg LeMond Headlines Cycling BC’s Annual Fundraising Gala

Former American pro cyclist, three-time Tour de France winner, and entrepreneur, Greg LeMond, is set to headline Cycling BC’s third annual Evening of Champions Gala on Thursday, October 8th.

This sold-out fundraising event provides funds for the iRide school cycling program in British Columbia. Cycling BC hopes to raise enough funds to offer its successful program to 25,000 school students in the next 12 months.

“Our goal is to create accessible programs to inspire more youth to take up cycling. With the funds raised we will be able to offer cycling programs to all schools in the province,” said Richard Wooles, Cycling BC’s executive director.

The iRide program provides bicycles, helmets, and national-level coaching to kids 6 to 16 years of age. The program gets kids on bikes, having fun and learning new skills, with the goal of turning them into life-long cyclists. Since last year, more than 13,000 young riders have participated in the iRide program.

In 1986, LeMond became the first non-European professional cyclist to win the Tour de France–a feat he would match two more times during a five-year period. During his illustrious professional career, LeMond also captured two Road World Championships, and became the first cyclist to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which named him its Sportsman of the Year in 1989.

“We are very excited to host someone of Greg’s caliber and character,” said Wooles.

The evening will also feature some of Canada’s top cyclists from the past and present. The event features a reception, dinner, both a silent and live auction, and will bring together more than 200 cycling enthusiasts with an interest in shaping the future of cycling in B.C.
