Warm, sunny skies greeted some of BC’s top cyclocross racers last weekend as they came to do battle at Whistler Cyclocross, the first race in the Cycling BC Premier Cross Series.
Event organizers went all out to create a uniquely challenging and fun course at Whistler Creekside. The race circuit included a climb on the ski hill, a creek crosssing, cobble stones, and even a fly-over. Racers are already looking forward to returning in 2016.
The racing was as hard and competitive as the course was challenging and fun. In the Elite Men’s category, Craig Richey, Red Truck-Garneau p/b Easton, took the win ahead of a hard charging Bob Welbourn, Glotman Simpson Cycling Club, and Kevin Calhoun, Rocky Mountain Factory Team.
The Elite Women’s category ended up being a 3-way battle right to the end. Sandra Walter, Liv Giant, took an early and commanding lead, only to be forced into a few unexpected stop in the pits and to lose the lead and the win to Jean Ann Berkenpas, Giant Vancouver. Walter fought hard with Glotman Simpson rider Morgan Cabot to salvage second place with Cabot rounding out the top 3.
There was great racing in all the categories, and points are being tracked for those in the series.
The next race in the BC Premier Cyclocross series is Vanier Park Cyclocross this Sunday, October 4. For race details go to: www.westcoastcycling.ca.
The series will be adding a Master 40+ Women’s category starting this Sunday at Vanier Park Cyclocross. Racers in this category will start with the Intermediate Women and will be scored for series standings separately.
