The spirit of cyclocross is alive and thriving in the Interior of British Columbia as Cycling BC’s Premier Cyclocross Series race #5 had a stop in Kelowna last weekend for the School of Hard Knox race.
The race took place in Knox Mountain Park, just a bike’s throw away from downtown Kelowna, along the shores of Okanagan Lake. The twisty, two kilometer course provided a fast, fun circuit which was highlighted by the rain-soaked run-up, which turned the typical dry and dusty slope to a slick, challenging slog of muck. In the end, a great time was had by all.
“It was great to have Cycling BC make the journey to Kelowna to support the great work that is being done in the Interior. The local cyclocross community is already planning for 2016 with possible new races in both Kamloops and Rossland. It is nice to see that cyclocross is growing right across BC,” commented Cycling BC Race Coordinator Barry Lyster.
The Lower Mainland riders who braved the snowy Coquihalla Highway to support this race were rewarded with points towards the BC Premier Cross series overall titles. Geza Rodgers, EV/DEVO pb Catalyst Kinetics has strengthened her lead in the U13 girl’s category while brother Lief’s great race has now given him the lead in the U15 boy’s category. Elizabeth Gin, EV/DEVO pb Catalyst Kinetics had another impressive race to also add to her lead in the U17 girls category.
Paul McCarthy, Steed Cycles, led everyone on his single speed to not only win the race, but take the series win in the Single Speed category. Good luck to Paul at next week’s Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships in Victoria.
The final race in the BC Premier Cyclocross Series will be this weekend at Daryl Evans Racing – Junkyard Dog CX. Series winners will be announced at the conclusion of the race.
