2015 Sidney Velo Tuesday Night Time Trial Series

Date

Jun. 30, 2015 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Event Information

We hold a 17.4-km time trial every Tuesday evening from May through August, rain or shine – the riders decide whether it’s too wet to race. Open to all age categories of cyclists and paracyclists.

Location: Start/finish at Cy Hampson Park in North Saanich near Sidney, B.C. on Lochside Avenue between Mount Newton Cross Road and the McTavish Road Interchange

Time: Sign-on start time: 6:30 pm. Racing start time: 7:00 pm.

A minimum of 3 rides per season are required to win a category.
Insurance: Every rider MUST show proof of insurance – a Cycling BC Race License (UCI/CCA Licence or Provincial Licence), or Associate Membership with primary affiliation to Sidney Velo. If you don’t have one of these, you must buy one at cyclingbc.net and bring it to the time trial. We no longer sell associate memberships or licences at the time trial. Riders without proof of insurance cannot ride the time trial.

Cost: $5 per time trial or $50 for the season. Free for under age 19.

Rules

Holding this time trial on public roads is a privilege. We must obtain approval each year from Central Saanich , North Saanich , the RCMP and the Ministry of Transportation. We must abide by their rules or the privilege can be revoked at any time.

Riders must abide by the rules below or they will be barred from participating in the time trial:

  • Provide proof of insurance ( Cycling BC membership or race license).
  • Wear an approved cycling helmet.
  • Recumbent bicycles and tricycles must have an elevated flag for increased visibility.
  • Obey the rules of the road, including:
    • Do not cross the centreline of the road.
    • Stay to the right of the roadway in the bicycle lane or on the paved shoulder as much as possible, except to pass cyclists, debris, parked vehicles, or other obstructions. Unnecessary riding outside of the bicycle/shoulder lane is not allowed.
    • Stay in the bicycle lane to the right of the cones at the Lochside Drive and Mount Newton X Road corner and at the McTavish Interchange and Lochside Drive corner. Do not attempt to pass another cyclist in the coned area at these corners.
    • Pull to the right and stop for emergency vehicles.
    • Obey the directions of emergency services personnel.
  • Obey the directions of the marshals and officials:
    • Marshals located at the corners of Lochside/Mt. Newton X Road and Lochside/McTavish are not authorized to stop motor vehicles.
    • Marshals will raise a “Slow” sign if there is a potential danger to riders due to motor vehicles, pedestrians or other cyclists.
    • Marshals will raise a “Stop” sign if there is imminent danger.
    • Marshals will wave riders through if there is no potential danger.
  • Be polite to motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, marshals, and officials – even if you think that they are in the wrong.
  • Do not draft other riders.
  • Report the names or numbers of riders breaking these rules to the timekeeper.

Riders violating these rules will be disqualified and have their time nullified for a first offence. A second offence will result in the rider being barred from the time trial for the rest of the season.

In addition:

  • Do not cross the start/finish line going south after the time trial has begun ( 7 or 6:30 PM ) unless you are racing. Warm up and cool down to the north of the start/finish.
  • Wear your number low down in the centre of your back.
  • Do not block the bicycle lane or roadway in the start/finish area after you have finished your time trial.
  • When passing a slower rider, try to alert him/her of your presence (e.g., “On your left”), recognizing that traffic noise and time trial helmets may make it difficult to be heard, check for following traffic and signal your intention to move left, if necessary, pass with a safe lateral gap (e.g., 0.6 m or 2 feet, minimum), and do not move to the right until well past the other rider.
  • When being passed, stay as far to the right as practicable, and ride in a straight line.

May the wind always be at your back.
