Return to Sport Update – October 29, 2021

Update: This post has been edited to reflect further updates and clarifications from viaSport which came just hours after this post was originally published.

The latest update to the BC Provincial Health Officer’s Gatherings and Events Order published on October 25th states that an adult (19+) must now be fully vaccinated (has received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine) if the adult is leading, supervising or assisting with a program for children or youth, whether the program takes place inside or outside (Section D.7 and D.8 of the order)

Cycling BC is still awaiting clarification from viaSport and the government on whether this applies to both volunteer and paid roles.

  • Update: Any unpaid supervisor/coach/volunteer supervising or assisting with indoor and outdoor youth sport must show proof of vaccine (two doses).

Youth participants (21 and under) in sport are exempt from showing proof of vaccination. For indoor sport, adult participants (22 and older) must show proof of vaccination.

  • Update (for mixed age groups): Youth 12 and older participating in sport events and programs primarily with adults must show proof of vaccine (two doses).

Spectators (19+) at indoor sports must also show proof of vaccination. We are awaiting confirmation on whether spectators (12 to 21 years) are exempt from showing proof of vaccination as spectators at indoor sports.

  • Update: Adult and youth spectators (12 and older) at indoor sports must show proof of vaccination.

Other Updates:

  • Employees working in sport activities or programming in their employment capacity do not need to show proof of vaccination. Note that some organizations may require employees to show proof of vaccination as part of the terms of their employment.
  • Organizers of events and programs must check proof of vaccination for indoor and outdoor sport. Information for event and program organizers on how to check proof of vaccination is on the Province of B.C.’s website.
  • Capacity for spectators: Outdoor sport activities can have 5,000 spectators or 50 per cent seated capacity, whichever is greater. Seats must be provided for everyone. There are no capacity restrictions on indoor sport activities. All spectators must have a seat. Proof of vaccination is required for all spectators at indoor sporting events.

The requirements of the order are in place until January 31, 2022.

viaSport will be updating the Return to Sport Restart 2.0 chart and FAQs as soon as possible.
