iRide enjoyed another busy week in preparation for Bike to School week and held new events in Comox, Richmond and Port Coquitlam. Highlights of the week included sessions for 650 students of Kwayquitlam middle school, innovative modifications to ‘Shark Island’ by students of Christina Lake, and a return to Lake Trail Middle in Comox, BC. Overall, iRide visited 16 schools across British Columbia and provided a safe and fun cycling experience for 1876 students.
Lake Trail teacher, Ms. Jana Buckle has been an out-spoken supporter of the iRide program since her school first participated in an event last fall (missed the video last year? check it out here and here). One of Jana’s students, Damien says “this is amazing! I feel so ALIVE out here on my bike!” Ms. Buckle states:
The iRide program has not only provided my students with an amazing skill set from basic to advanced mountain biking, but it has also helped nurture a lifelong passion for the incredible sport of cycling. I am beyond impressed with not only the level of progression I saw in my students, but also by the level of knowledge and sheer motivation displayed daily by our gifted instructor, Lauren Lan. The absolute joy on my students’ faces during each session says it all…the iRide program is EPIC! Read More
iRide head coach, Natasha Lockey wrapped up School District 51 events last week with more adventures for students of Grand Forks and Christina Lake.
Of course I brought all of the students together to finish with a creative version of ‘Shark Island’. In fact we played one of the more abstract versions of the game I have ever seen, with bridges between islands and extended lives, all designed by the students. It looked awesome and I certainly wanted to jump in and play too! Read More
iRide coordinator Ben Chaddock has also scheduled two iRide coaching certification events over the coming four weeks. Each weekend will include the NCCP Let’s Ride certification on Saturday and the NCCP Basic Cycling Skills on Sunday before finishing with a community iRide event. These events intend to activate the local community and kick-start iRide events for the future. By running an iRide community event on the Sunday afternoon, new coaches will get a chance to practice their skills in a real environment under the supervisor of iRide’s Head Coach.
