Strong Performances by BC Athletes at MTB XCO Canada Cup #3

This past weekend May 31-June 2, was the 3rd round of the 2019 MTB XCO Canada Cup in Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec where the Club Cycliste de Charlevoix hosted the 21st edition of the race!

Athletes from BC made a strong impression on Friday night at the XCC short course race; the Juniors and Elites raced together, with 17-year-old Emilly Johnston (Pendrel Racing) from Comox, taking the 4th spot in the Elite Women’s race and Carter Woods (Rocky Mountain) of Cumberland, the current #1 world-ranked junior, taking 2nd place in the Elite Men’s race.

In Saturday’s main event, the XCO, another rider from Comox, Erik Ashton, took 2nd place and the Canada Cup Leader’s Jersey in the Men’s U17 race. Emilly Johnston took the win in the Jr. Women’s race and Carter Woods took the win and the Canada Cup Leader’s Jersey in the Junior Men’s event. A couple of other strong performances by BC Juniors included Hamish Graham of Courtney finishing in 5th place and Kieran Nilsen of Comox in 8th.  In the Women’s Elite race, Victoria’s Elyse Nieuwold finished 9th and Squamish resident Holden Jones finished 8th as a first-year Elite/U23 while Carter Nieuwesteeg of Victoria came in 27th.

A job well done by all the young riders from BC as they continue to improve and develop to their full potential.
